Columbia News 2018
January 7, 2018

Happy New Year it does not seem possible that another year has arrived; hopefully this year will bring better health to my household.
Well we made it through the first blizzard in the New Year with no power outage. Looks like we will continue to have the cold weather stay with us. There was no school on the 4th and then we had a two hour delay on Friday the 5th.
The road to Woodland Friday evening with the Narraguagus Knights wasn’t great but we made it to and from without incident. Let’s just say I was glad to get back in my driveway that evening.
Our daughter Diadem in Boston said they got a ton of snow from this blizzard and lots of places that had flooded. Her children got to play in the snow in their back yard but did not stay out to long as the weather was too cold for them.
I have been working on the Small Family genealogy of Milbridge, Maine and have connected with a classmate in doing so. I even tracked down information for him that he did not know of.
This week I have connected through DNA a fourth cousin Leslie Gemignani who lives in Bremerton, Washington with her husband, originally from Haverhill, Massachusetts on my mother side the Hutchings. We share the same great, great grandparents Theodore and Martha (Bowden) Hutchings. I have been working on and off trying to find other members of that same family. Leslie told me she is on Facebook so we can actually see each other and stay connected.
DNA does work after all in connecting with family you thought you didn’t have.
I attended Narraguagus Snowmobile Club public supper on Saturday January 6, there were a few that ventured out to the supper; some came as far away as Bass Harbor just to enjoy the wonderful meal.
The weather has been the usual topic with everyone you see. All of that hot weather last summer has been forgotten. Here is to hoping the temperature will get above minus and closer to 30 degrees. If it does it will surely feel like a heat wave coming through.

Up Coming Events:

Out and About
What a week we have had in the temperature first being below zero and then as high as 50 degrees above. We just don’t know what we will get from one day to another; but at least we know how to survive when we have snow, rain and wind coming at us. We just hunker down and keep the wood stove burning for whatever may come to us.
In this past storm we had a lot of flooding around the area, the ice went out in the surrounding rivers, and lots of folks took videos of the ice going out and the rushing water down the rivers. Roads were flooded in lots of places in the area. For us we just stayed home and off the roads and let nature take its course.
This past week the bus drivers of the district met for a meeting at the superintendent office in Harrington to go over some paper work that we have to make out. It is always nice to get to socialize with the other drivers at these kinds of meetings.
On Tuesday Carroll had an appointment in Ellsworth that got us out and about, while there I had a couple of errands that needed to be done, than on Friday he had an appointment in Gouldsboro.
On Saturday all of the activities were canceled due to the storm and reschedule for another time.
On Sunday the 14th, I enjoyed visiting with Doris Joy on the Basin Road here in Addison, while there she had others that stopped by to visit with her, Billy Thompson of Cape Split, Joyce Joy and Billy Leighton of Unionville. Later I traveled to Cherryfield and had an early meal with the folks at the Table of Plenty. It is always nice to get to visit with all the folks that attend and especially with Dale and Janice Crosby from Jonesport We were entertained with two folks playing and singing on their guitar and banjo. On my way home I stopped by and visited with Huddy Peterson of Harrington and hopefully cheered her up a bit. We always have something to say and laugh about.
I have been working on my family tree, documenting and printing out the sources that I have found and putting in a notebook. I actually found some new info on one of my great great grandparents Benjamin Foster Reynolds and Sarah H. Reynolds that they had divorced and she remarried to Stephen Reynolds of Gardiner, Maine. If you dig deep enough you can find out a lot that your family never knew about.
I just borrowed a copy of a little history of Cape Split written by a Wass that is really interesting to read. She writes about her family and the folks that lived in that area of Addison. It is things like this that just happens to fall into your lap when it is least expected. I will read it and make a copy before I return this story to its owner.
While I was at church this morning I found out that Carl Ganiel will be having surgery this coming week as well as John Whitten so get well wishes go out to the both of them.
The upcoming Adult Education classes will be starting up in February; there will be a genealogy class on Wednesday evening for this session coming up. We are trying a new night for this class in hopes more can get out and attend. Watch for the brochure in the mail for what will be offered this semester.
On Saturday evening we had a phone call from our son Zebadiah who is somewhere in China to go to his ship he will be on. When the call came in it said someone was calling from Australia but with his phone number, I immediately thought who would be calling me from there. Well behold it was Zeb and we had a nice talk with him. He said he had sent us some pictures to see of the Great Wall of China that he visited the day before. He is a day ahead of us, so as usual he has traveled into the future again. Who would of thought that we could travel into the future and back again, it is done all the time with the time change not just in the movies.
Condolences go out to the family of Charlie Curtis of Cherryfield. He will be greatly missed by all of his friends and family.

Columbia, Maine
January 21, 2018
It was a very nice day, while I was out and about, on Monday as I went to the eye doctor in Ellsworth then I motored to Winterport for a visit with Molly and Dick Woodsum. I had a very nice visit with them; it has been quite some time since I have visited with them.
On my way home I stopped at the Chicken Barn and did a look see, then onto L.L. Bean in Ellsworth for a shopping spree; from there to US Cellular to update my phone.
I had to stop at Goodwill for a look see around, then gas before I headed home for the evening. It was a very nice day to be out about and I did not have to hurry to get home to do a bus run.
On Tuesday I had an appointment in Lubec with my dentist, the roads were rough but otherwise it was another day to be out and about but between bus runs. I am glad that we had two good days before the snowstorm on Wednesday where we had to cancel school for the day.
Friday I drove the Lady Knights to Bucksport for their game which was another win for them. It was a late night for me to be out.
The DAR Hannah Weston Chapter met Saturday afternoon for a meeting at Valdine Atwood’s in Machias with eleven members present. Later during the day I attended the Cherryfield Snowmobile Club supper where a good number of folks came out to it. At the table I was at we had a lively discussion on the Bass Harbor folks that were related to the Lovejoy’s in Addison. Afterwards I visited with Bunny and Steve Plummer before returning home, a good evening had by all.
We have had a good weekend and hopefully the storm that is being predicted will pass us by this coming week. Another good meal was held at the Table of Plenty in Cherryfield on Sunday, many local folks came out for it. The menu is always a surprise when you go.
Doug Dowling and Nathan Norton are both in need of prayers; last I heard they both were in the hospital.
I have heard that a young couple has moved into the house next door that has been up for sale for a very long time, I am so glad someone has bought it as it is a very nice home.
Again this week I have connected with another relative through DNA, and she has brought up some questions on one of our Reynolds side that I need to look into. It’s a mystery to me for now.

Out and About
We had two days that we had a two hour delay due to the weather this past week. The weather has warmed up somewhat over the weekend and hopefully we will have good weather throughout the week. And hopefully the stormy weather that is predicted will bypass us.
I have been out and about, delivering some history of Cape Split, I did not get the chance to stop and visit with this person as he was gone and I had a bit of time before I would be back on the bus.
I called on Sonny Worcester in Columbia the other day it was nice to see him. He has loaned the Clarence Drisko genealogy papers to the Heritage Center in Machias to be copied.
Dick Bedard of Columbia Falls has some genealogy and history books that he has put on EBay, check them out, his user name is Wescogus. He has the Family Registrar of the Merritt Family up for sale. The George Kirkland Merritt and Jemina Tabbutt Reynolds family if anyone is interested. It does go along with what is found in the Early Pleasant River Families of Washington County, Maine.
I have not done too much on my genealogy this week, had to take a break.
Well I guess I caught this mess that is going around from the kids on my bus, I have been lying low all weekend, and I just hope I can feel better so to drive bus this coming week.
We had a nice conversation with Gary Leighton of Augusta on Sunday afternoon. It is always nice to hear from family. I also had a call from my daughter Diadem of Boston, getting caught up on family news.
Harris Tucker of Gouldsboro stopped by for a visit with Carroll the other day.
I believe Joan Ramsay is feeling better; she has been out of school this past week. I know there is a lot of sickness in the area, what with the weather changes going from cold to warm and back to cold, no wonder everyone is sick.

Out and About
January flew right by, where does the time go? It seems like I did not get a thing done that I wanted to do. I guess with the cold temperatures outside I did not feel like doing anything major. I did get some genealogy done and then I caught the crud and was down for the count for four days. I missed two days of work because of it. Hopefully I won’t get this again this year.
Our new neighbors have moved in on the Ridge Road, Philip and Jade Willey bought the former Dr. Moran’s home. I also heard that a lady from Bar Harbor bought Donald Hicks home and has also moved in. Welcome to the neighborhood folks.
Folks gathered Saturday evening for another one of the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club suppers held at their club house in Cherryfield. It was a cold evening to get out and I noticed that some folks that usually attend were not there due to the cold.
Everyone around is catching this mess either the cold virus or the flu, it hits everyone and I don’t think there is any way to miss it as it will find you.
As I look out my dining room window the sun is out but cloudy and the wind is blowing in gusts, the temperature is hovering around 40 degrees; I believe the weather man is predicting colder weather this coming week. Spring is right around the corner hopefully, every day we are gaining more daylight.
I have started to ‘spring’ clean upstairs, decided that I needed to get the cobwebs down and spruce everything up. One closet is giving me a bit of time in deciding what needs to be tossed and what needs to be saved. I have the urge to do some major repairs but guess I will not pursue them as they are costly. Wishful thinking on my part and my wallet tells me something differently.
Over the weekend the family of Daniel and April Atwater of Steuben lost their home to a fire. I am sure they will need some help to get back on their feet again. I imagine some benefits will be popping up to help them.
Not many showed up to the Table of Plenty in Cherryfield, probably because of the weather. The meal was great and the folks that came out are always great to talk to.
This past week I have been connecting again with relatives on my two oldest children through their DNA. Their DNA takes them into Canada via Northern Aroostook County. So far I have the right line to a certain branch of the St. Pierre. I think everyone back in the day had to many children to keep track of which makes it hard to figure out as families loved to use the same name in their own families.

Out and About

Condolences go out to April and Daniel Atwater of Unionville who lost their home and all of their processions to a fire on February 3, 2018. There will be a Benefit Supper & Chinese Auction for them on Sunday, March 18th, 1-4 at the Ella Lewis Elementary in Steuben. This will be a pot luck meal for anyone that would like to add to the table to help out these folks. Contact Melissa Wright at 263-4387 or on Facebook. The Atwater’s are staying at the Lamb House in Cherryfield for the time being.
Carroll and I traveled to Bangor for his appointment on Tuesday and then enjoyed lunch at Governors before we returned home.
We heard this week that Carroll’s sister Judy that lives in Texas is in the hospital, we hope that she will be soon on the mend and be back home.
Get well wishes to Ruth Athens of Lubec, Valdine Atwood of Machias and Dick Paul of Addison.
I heard that Doris Joy of Addison had a lovely meal at the Good and Plenty Restaurant in Milbridge with family to celebrate her 103 birthday.
Other folks that had birthdays on the 8th besides myself were: Jack Gray, Virginia Tibbetts, Wayne Trunk, Roger Libby and my pen pal Janice Goetz of Illinois.
Friday evening the D.W. Merritt boys played against Beals Island and won with a score of 45 to 61. The Beals team had played Addison twice and beaten them, but this night the Addison team showed them what they could do out score them. Way to go Addison.
I drove the team to Beals Friday evening and had the chance to drive across the bridge that is being working on, just glad it was not storming and I could see where I was going. That is not fun driving across it now.
Eighteen members attended the Hannah Weston Chapter, DAR meeting at the Blue Bird Restaurant in Machias on Saturday. We welcomed our newest member Renee Davis Gray of Addison; she came in on John I. Davis, Pvt. NJ.
On Sunday Tiffany, Zachary and Konner Strout, Michelle and David McLaughlin of Harrington, and Sherry and Dick Paul of Addison came here for an ice cream social, we used the excuse to make homemade ice cream to celebrate all of our birthdays we had during the winter months. Dick Paul made a chocolate sauce to put over the ice cream and I made an Angel Food Cake to go with it. This was a nice way to break up the winter with a get together on a Sunday afternoon.
Marcus LiBrizzi was the speaker for the Hannah Weston Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution meeting on Saturday February 10, 2018. He spoke on his book Lost Atusville, A Black Settlement From The American Revolution.
Marcus told us how he came about in researching this black settlement of Atusville, Maine located on the Whitneyville Road at “the Crossing” of outer Court Street, Munson’s Pitch, and the railroad tracks in Machias, Maine.
He had some interesting tales of his research, he found that some folks still knew something of the history of this area going back to the 1700’s up to now. He told us that these slaves were active in the plots and battles of the American Revolution. We heard about rumors of the Underground Railroad, a secret tunnel, a school for black children that was built in the middle of the cemetery plot and of paranormal activity there.
Marcus spoke about the last resident Harley Henry driving his horse and wagon through the town of Machias collecting trash and of folks that actually knew him at this early time. We heard more stories from several members that knew some more of the history of this settlement.
Needless to say this was a most interesting talk and Marcus was very energetic in giving this talk to us. I actually found when I got home that I had his book. I guess it is time to reread it in my spare time.

I am in Boston visiting with my grandchildren Asa and Mabel during school vacation and on Saturday. I left real early from home to make the 7 a.m. bus in Bangor. I think that everyone else wanted to get somewhere early for the upcoming vacation as we ended up in Portland with a full bus so that we could leave early and get into Boston earlier than normal.
On my arrival my grandchildren and their parents met me at the bus station with a huge balloon saying Happy Birthday and lots of hugs and kisses for me. This was a wonderful surprise.
After lunch we all went bowling and the grandkids had a wonderful time. Lots of plans are being made to do something every day for fun.
Of course the first thing in getting back to their home was having some Nana Ronie craft time, where they enjoyed making one craft and did some coloring with me with the papers that I saved for them.
By the time this comes out I hope to hear that the Narraguagus Knights did well at the tournament on Tuesday at the Cross Center in Bangor.
We woke up on Sunday morning to new fallen snow here in Boston for the kids to get a chance to play outside and build a snowman before the snow disappears. Of course I woke up to two extras in my bed snuggling with me and saying it’s time to get up Nana.
Last Thursday February 15, the Professional Bus Drivers met for a luncheon at Lori Mathews home in Cherryfeld. A fun time socializing with each other as some of us does not see the other drivers on our regular routes. Those that were able to attend were Buddy Mills, Darlene Stubbs, Dawn McManus, Patricia Thaxter, Ronie Strout, and Lori Mathews.
Adult Education classes started this past week; some were canceled due to low enrollment, one being the genealogy class. Maybe in the fall we can get enough to enroll when the weather is good.
Condolence go out to Delbert Caleb’s family, he will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

February 25, 2018
Out and About
Our February school vacation has come to an end. I traveled to Boston on Saturday the 17th to visit my daughter Diadem and her family. I was met at the bus station by the whole family with a gigantic balloon saying Happy Birthday on it. The grandchildren rushed to me and threw themselves into my arms with hugs and kisses. What a surprise that was.
They gathered me up and we headed to their home in Dorchester that was about 10 minutes away. After having lunch we all went bowling to the delight of the children, needless to say we all had a great time.
The first thing that they wanted to do with me was do a Nana Ronie craft just as soon as we arrived. Their craft time is not an ordinary craft time it has to be a Nana Ronie craft time. This is because when I go to visit I take items for them to make special craft items. We colored together; we made valentine cards with Valentine stickers, shamrock doilies that were colored and had St. Patrick stickers on them.
One day we made paper gingerbread boys, Asa colored his to be a ninja, whereas Mabel decorated hers with stickers, buttons, flowers, cupcakes and a pot of gold with a lady bug on its head.
One day we had an Asa craft day, whereas Asa showed Mabel and me how to make a lantern. He had made already made one at school to go by. That was a special treat to me.
Every day morning and afternoon they needed a Nana craft time with me.
On Sunday it snowed so we made blueberry muffins before we headed out doors to build a snowman, a dog and a fort. The grandchildren were enjoying themselves with their nanny.
Monday the 19th we all headed to the Brattle Theatre to see Looney Tunes special offered during this weekend. This is a tradition we do every time I visit in February. Afterwards we head for the candy store to buy our special treats, then to the comic book store to get a couple new additions.
Tuesday was a day spent at many parks; we went to the McConnell Park, where we picked up sea shells to paint when we got home. McMorrell Park was next before we headed to Castle Island Park, so the children could ride their bicycles to the play area. After returning home and having our supper we ended with a walk to Ronan Park where all the neighborhood children were playing.
On Wednesday we took the children to the pool before lunch and then in the afternoon we headed to the Franklin Zoo.
Everyone in the whole area had to of been there as well. The temperature on Tuesday and Wednesday was in the 70’s so everyone was enjoying the sunshine and warmth.
Thursday brought us a rainy day and the temperature had dropped to the 40’s, we spent the time at home resting in the morning then we headed to the library near them to return books and pick up new books to read.
Friday February 23 came with rain and cooler weather, so the grandchildren and I decided to make yeast bread in the morning and chocolate roll out cookies in the afternoon. What fun that was with the children helping to make, roll out the dough and cut them out.
The week had come to an end, lots of crafts and coloring done, snuggling with each of them, reading them their library books, playing with them and watching together their shows and then it was time to pack for my return home.
What a week of making memories with them. Hopefully they will remember this as they grow older.
Was I tired, when I got home I had to take a nap just to get ready to unpack my bags, another vacation was now in the books as they say and another week vacation is on the horizon in a couple of months.
Condolences go out to Verrill “Sonny” Worcester Jr. family; he will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. I had just visited him at his home about three weeks ago on a genealogy quest. I guess you just never know from one day to the next what will take place.
On Sunday Carroll and I took a ride out and about the area. We visited our son Zachary, and then visited my daughter Michelle in Harrington as a door yard visit. We then took a ride by for a look see of Abner’s new store that has recently opened in Columbia Falls. After that we traveled to Beals Island so I could show Carroll the Beals Bridge that is being worked on before we returned home for lunch.
Just heard that Joseph Tibbetts of Columbia has returned from his hog hunt down south, he will be home again with nothing to show but memories of the hunt. Most hunts now are in for the memories not just to score an animal.

Out and About
This past week I finished the Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon series of the Outlanders. The book is a large one so it has taken me quite a while to finish it.  Now maybe I can get something else done.  I don’t plan on starting the  next one as I have some genealogy to get done for a couple of folks.
I am working on Edmund Stevens Jr born in 1789 line for a lady.  This person has documentation that Edmund’s two sons - Joseph and Edmund Jr - have different DNA signatures.  It appears that they are not related at all.  We surmise that Edmund Stevens Sr needed sons after having five daughters to inherit his farm and to carry on his name, so he might have adopted a son Edmund Jr to do this. We are trying to find out who Edmund Stevens Jr real parents are.
I have talked with distant Stevens families on their connections but they don’t seem to have the information that this lady actually needs.  She also is trying to find where Edmund Jr. Is buried, a possibility is that he is buried in Columbia Falls.
I am told that Joseph Wilson and his wife Mary Swatt is in the same cemetery.  I am looking now for a complete master list of who are buried in the cemeteries on Great Hill in Columbia Falls.
Another genealogy line I am working on has to do with the Jasper Leighton of Milbridge/Steuben area.
I have been connecting with some of my DNA matches on line these past few weeks.  I have found some cousins out there that I did not know I was related to.
It seems a lot of folks are in the hospital; some that I have heard are: Nedra Colbert of Cherryfield, Hazel Carter of Harrington and Tom Rittenhouse of Addison.  Get well wishes go out to all of them as well to Molly Woodsum of Winterport who has the flu, to Janice Crosby of Jonesport, Gary Alley of Addison and to Judy Sprague of Texas.
Condolences go out to Sally Thompson’s family on her passing. She will be greatly missed by family and friends.
I finally got the chance to stop by and introduce myself to our new neighbors, Philip and Jada Willey.  It is great to have someone in the house now
On Thursday school was canceled due to the snow storm we got, and now I see we are expected to get more snow on Tuesday into Wednesday.  Not much we can do about it, I guess just be prepared for what may come and deal with it.
On Saturday the 10th I spent the afternoon at the Mayhew Library checking out their genealogy section.  I needed to update my list and found some new items had been donated to the genealogy section.
The Cherryfield Congressional Church has posted their upcoming suppers on
FB, the first one is Wednesday May 9th at 5:30 p.m., and they are serving ham and scalloped potatoes that evening.  I will try and keep you posted on the others as they come up.
We have seen a lot of deer out and about, they come to my bird feeders and then make their rounds to the other homes here on the Ridge.  I also saw a flock of turkeys across from the Redimarkers on the Ridge getting fed up for another winter storm
Carroll and I took a ride Sunday afternoon, we rode up to Centerville, then to Harrington to see what we could see, plus made a door yard stop at our sons before returning home to take a nap.
I had a lovely meal at the Table of Plenty this week it was Indian food that the folks made for our meal.  I have had this at my daughters in Boston so I knew what I was eating. They did a great job.
Later on I had a nice visit with Charlene Gray after I had been to the grocery store.
Seems like the weekend is never long enough to get everything done that one wants to do.

Out and About
Again we lost a day of school on Wednesday the 14th; we received two feet of snow here on the Ridge. I think everyone is looking forward to green grass now even though we can get many more storms before that happens. The snow is very pretty when I look out my dining room window, it does cover up the brown grass. Of course you know when we get that green grass everyone will be complaining of the black flies and that they have to mow their lawns. I guess what every season it is most of us can find something to complain about; it is either to cold or too hot, or to rainy.
Carroll and I traveled to Bangor on Thursday for his two appointments, on our way home we stopped in Ellsworth to pick up some things he needed at Walmart. Then on Friday we traveled to Ellsworth for his Eye appointment and had lunch at Riverside Café afterwards. Thank goodness I got everything else done on the day before so we could scoot right on home.
On Saturday I met up with Pam Beveridge and Debbie Roberge for lunch at the Bluebird Restaurant in Machias before we attended the Washington County Historical and Genealogical Society at the Emergency Management Room on Center Street in Machias with twenty one present.
Our guest speaker for the meeting was Carol McCoy, President of the Maine Genealogical Society; she discussed the advantages of our status as the newest Chapter member of MGS. Carol presented a certificate to President Betsy Fitzgerald of the Washington County Historical & Genealogical Society for becoming the newest Charter Member of the Maine Genealogical Society.
At our regular meeting we discussed what everyone’s Historical Societies had for projects and any activities to report, all of them are still in hibernation and have not yet open for their summer programs.
Our next meetings of the Society will be May 19, July 21 and October 20 at the Emergency Management Room in Machias, so mark your calendars to attend.
It was great to see everyone that turned out to the meeting and especially nice that Gerry and Janice Gower made the trip to attend all the way from Raymond, Maine.
I talked with Janice Crosby of Jonesport; she is getting along fine but still under the weather. She hasn’t been out much because of the weather.
Get well wishes go out to Grace Gerrish and Bill VanHorn of Winter Harbor, Nedra Colbert of Cherryfield, Hazel Carter of Harrington, Gary Alley and Tom Rittenhouse of Addison,  Molly & Dick Woodsum of Winterport, Janice Crosby of Jonesport, and to Judy Sprague of Texas.
Condolences go out to Doug Dowling family on his passing; he will be greatly missed by all that knew him.
Upcoming Events:

Addison Town Meeting will be Tuesday, March 20 7 p.m. at the D. W. Merritt School in Addison.

Out and About

On Sunday March 18, we had our corn beef dinner with our children, Michelle and David McLaughlin, and Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout all from Harrington. I love to have them all about for a meal. If only the other three children and their families were with us too. It is hard when the others live away.
I guess the next gathering will be for Easter dinner and that is coming up soon. It seems I just sent out St. Patrick Day cards to the little ones and now Easter cards are already in the mail to them. How time flies from one holiday to another.
On Monday evening March 19, 2018 the Town of Columbia held their town meeting with 40 residents and guest attending. Up to twenty seven residents voted for the selectman position, where it took three tries to vote in Joseph Tibbetts for a three year term. He ran against Marsha Worcester and JoAnne Champney.
Sonny Beal presided as moderator for the duration of the meeting and Marcia Worcester, Loretta MacLoud and Sharon Tibbetts were ballot clerks.
They had 48 articles to vote on, with not much discussion on any of them. They did raise $25,000 for the Administrative Assistant.
No one ran against Kelly Moores for the position of Director for MSAD #37 for a three year term.
The meeting adjourned 8:07 p.m.
The supper before the meeting was well attended with folks from out of town coming to enjoy the meal. It seems like these suppers are not bringing in the younger folks and their families. It used to be a great place to socialize before the town meeting and seeing elderly folks that you normally don’t see any other time of the year. Now we are the older folks and no younger ones are coming to even know what is happening in their town. Sad to say a supper like this would bring in 150 or more folks with two settings. Those days are now gone.
On Tuesday evening the Town of Addison held their town meeting with 109 voters and a few guest from out of town that came to check out what was going on.
Addison had 32 articles to vote on for the evening. Chris Chartrand was moderator for the evening and John Rittenhouse, Sheila Mitchell and Mary Thompson were ballot clerks.
All 109 voters voted on Article 4 for a three year selectman with V. J. Lenfestey winning against Peter Davis, Keith Newman and Roberta Pinkham. Article 5, John Woodward was reelected for Treasurer for the ensuing year. Osborne Davis was reelected for Road Commissioner in Article 6 for the ensuing year and Article 8 has Debra Murphy reelected to serve a three year term as board of director for SAD #37.
One article held up with lots of discussion was Article 22 to see if the town would vote to raise and appropriate from Taxation $85,138.50 for Pleasant River Ambulance. Some folks wanted to give less money and some sounded like they wanted to get rid of them altogether.
Courtney Hammond President of Pleasant River Ambulance Service was there to answer all questions brought to him about the service they provide. After an hour of debate it was finally voted to fund this article. Thank goodness as it is needed in our area as the other two ambulance services are further away from us to get to us in a timely manner.
The Pleasant River Ambulance Service does a great job handling all the calls they get and have highly trained ambulance attendants on call 24-7 at the ambulance station.
The NHS Phys. Ed Class has been enjoying sledding during their classes and will do so while the snow holds up. I think that some of them have never done this before and that is a shame as I remember growing up with my siblings sliding in the fields by our house especially during a moonlight night. My parents would holler at us to come in to go to bed and we would always say in a little bit. What fun we had, those were the good old days.
Congratulations to Lois and John Farnsworth on their 53rd wedding anniversary on March 24th.
Condolences go out to Loyce Worcester and to Judy Delano’s families on their loss of their love ones.

Out and About
The month has flown by quite fast, I am not sure if I got done everything I thought I needed to do but that is okay as it looks like warmer weather is on its way. With the sun getting higher and higher in the sky it is warming up. We will probably get some cool days and one or two more snow storms but it will not last long now.
The physical education class was able to go this past week sledding, and they looked like they were having fun. The snow is all gone where they were sledding from the rain we received.
Pleasant River Ambulance Corp held a monthly meeting on Tuesday evening with discussion on what was said at all town meetings recently held. Some items will be researched in the near future for all those residents that need their questions answers.
Carroll and I took a ride on Saturday to see what was happening in our area as it was a great day to be out riding around.
On Easter Sunday we had our family in for an Easter dinner with all of the fixings. I always like to have it in the late afternoon so I can go to Church and then prepare everything in the afternoon.
The next gathering will be on Mother’s Day I guess, maybe then I will get the chance to go out for a change.
We had company later in the evening Carroll’s nephew Jonathan and Daniele Plummer and their daughter Adreana stopped by and left us with a couple of slices of custard pie that Daniele had made.

Out and About
Another week started out slow but with the activities that we as bus drivers need to drive the students to and from their games has kept me quite busy. Students were bussed to the High School on Wednesday to do Hoops form Heart raising money they had collected from their family and friends.
The Pee Wee ball games are coming to an end this coming week with play offs.
I have been having physical therapy twice a week on my shoulder. It is a lot better but not right yet. I just have to remember that I cannot lift heavy items, it is kind of hard to remember this when I have so much going on in my life that does require a lot of lifting and tugging.
The snow storm we got Friday evening left about four or five inches of snow but by 10 am it was mostly melted away. At least the roads were better later on in the day and with the sun out it was beautiful.
On Saturday I had to check out the inside yard sale in Columbia Falls to see if I had to have something from it. Lots of good stuff and yes there was something that I thought I needed. After I left the yard sale I headed home to get my cat Jasper and take him to the Clinic in Columbia for his shots. I was there as one of the early ones and stood in line for 30 minutes before it was my turn and the line continued to grow longer as folks brought their pets for their shots.
Condolence’s go out to the family of Lennox Ramsay of Addison, there were many out to his funeral and visitation Saturday afternoon paying their respects to the family. We will miss him here on the Ridge.
On my way home I stopped and visited my daughter Michelle in Harrington and then I decided to pay a visit to Maryann and Kevin Rice to help him with his ancestry tree.
We have this coming week and then school vacation coming up and I hope the weather will start and warm up.
On Friday evening I chatted with a lady from Fulton Missouri that use to live in Addison and related to Harland and Alice Plummer. Her mother is Virginia Plummer Chase and they moved to New Hampshire then to Missouri in 1969 where she now lives. It is a small world now with the internet to connect with folks especially the ones that are connecting with me through DNA. Wow, is all I can say and WWW means to me as World Wide Worcester’s, they are all over the world and they all go back to being related to the Worcester’s out of Columbia, Maine
I just learn of a young man that lives in Beals that is in need of a kidney transplant. Jeffrey Alley 21 year old son of Emily and Maurice Alley is on a waiting list for a kidney transplant. His blood type, B+ is not a common type, but blood type does not matter as much as in the past. A “Sharing/Swap” program enables a donor to give a kidney to a matching recipient with one of their potential donors (that wasn’t their match) giving to the other recipient. Jeffrey has been on dialysis since December 2015. I am not sure of how many folks know of this, but wanted to put it out there for everyone to know. I wish him luck in finding a donor that can help him to live a long life. If you need more information you could contact his mother. Prayers do wonder and he really could use them.
The Table of Plenty had a fine turn out for their meal that was put on by the Womens Health Resource Library in Milbridge. They did a great job and the meal was excellent. On my way home from the meal I stopped in to visit with Huddy Peterson to catch up on her news.

Out and About
I just heard that the Cherryfield Seed and Feed will be opening up on April 17 at the Old True Value Building on Rt. 1 in Cherryfield. How nice that the building will be used again for a business.
Another bit of news: The former Meme Café on Rt. 187, Indian River Rd, Addison will be opening up on May 1, 2018 under new management of the Downeast Amish Bakery of Columbia Falls and will be a Restaurant, Bakery, and Amish Community Market. Welcome to Addison and success. I hope to be able to check this out once they are opened.
SAD #37 has a newly licensed professional bus driver; Tim Birkenshaw has now joined the team. We wish him luck in driving for the district and learning all of the new routes that he will need to know.
I have been connecting with more and more relatives on my son and his daughter side through DNA. I am working on their family tree and adding more folks to it.
Everyone is looking forward to green grass and I wonder if they realize it will be black flies and lawn mowing season when the grass turns green. I do want the green grass and flowering trees and flowering shrubs that goes along with it, but mowing the lawn every three days doesn’t ‘cut’ it with me as nothing else gets done. I guess it will be better than shoveling snow.
On Tuesday I traveled to Orono with the 9th graders to check out the college during the day. Maybe some of them will go there when they graduate. It was a great day to be out and about at the college.
Tuesday evening I returned the DW Merritt ball team from their playoff game with Rose Gaffney School at the Beals Elementary Gym which DW Merritt won. Then on Thursday evening DW Merritt team played Lubec at the Narraguagus Gym in Harrington where they came in as the Downeast Pee Wee League 2018 Girls Runner-Up with Lubec as the winners.
The students and teacher have this week off for the April school vacation. Some students were talking about what they were going to do while they are on vacation. Hopefully the weather will be good for everyone that may be traveling during the week.
Get well wishes go out to Dixie Cirone of Harrington who is not feeling so well these days. Jeffery Alley of Beals came down with the Strep throat and influenza B so prayers are needed for him, if you remember he is also in need of a kidney.
Carroll and I enjoyed having supper at Bayview Take Out on Beals Friday evening. It was a lovely drive to and from with the sun shining and the temperature at 57 degrees.
Birthday wishes go out to Sarah Norton Wilson on turning 44 on April 26, also to Kimberly St. Pierre on April 29 and Diadem Washburn on April 30.

Out and About
What a great week I had while visiting my grandchildren in Boston. I arrived on Saturday afternoon for a week of fun with the children.
Sunday was a damp day with some showers off and on but we did get to go to Ronan Park and run off some excess energy after having some Nana Ronie crafts at home.
Monday was a down pour so we basically had to entertain ourselves all day with lots of coloring with the special Rainbow Pencils that I brought for them to color with.
Tuesday we ventured forward to go to Springville to see the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss at the Springfield Museum. While there we walked through Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden, checked out the Museum of Fine Arts, George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum and the Science Museum where we attended the Seymour Planetarium for the sky show. We ended the day with a lunch at Theodores Bar & Grill before heading home.
Wednesday, brought sunshine and warmer weather so we headed for Stone Zoo in Stoneham, Ma a small Zoo where we saw snow leopards, cougars, jaguars, gibbons, otters and many more animals, followed by lunch out with the grandchildren enjoying their lunch before heading home for a nap.
Thursday was raining off and on again, so we headed for the Boston Library at Fields Corner in Dorchester to see the Bubble Man event. This is the library the children love to go to for other programs and to check out books and movies.
On Friday morning we decided to try out the Lar Anderson Park in Brookline, MA and checked out the playground area before taking a walk about. We saw the Putterham School, the only eighteenth century schoolhouse in Brookline on our way to check out the Jack Kirrane Ice Skating Rink in the Park.
After lunch we headed to Jim Roche Community Ice Arena in West Roxbury, Ma. where Asa and Mabel did a great job for their first time on ice skates.
The week had ended for all of us and in between all of the activities; books were read, coloring with Nana and Nana Ronie crafts done. A good time was had by all.
Nana Ronie headed home on Saturday morning tired from a great vacation visiting with the grandchildren.
While I was gone, things ran smoothly at home, along with the cold weather and rain. Things happened and events were held in nearby Columbia Falls with the Annual Fish Fry and also in Columbia with the Pleasant River Fish & Game activities.
Condolences go out to the families of Donna Mae Grindle of Columbia and Harold Skinner of Harrington, their families will greatly miss them.
On Sunday Carroll and I checked out the Flea Market in Cherryfield and the Craft Fair in Columbia. I won one of the prizes at the Columbia Craft Fair that will be used as a gift for a special someone.
The Table of Plenty had a full house out for the meal; a lot of folks were out as the weather was great. I met new people on the table that I was at. On my way home I stopped and said hello to the Hammond, Norton and Plummer families having a gathering in Harrington.
I just heard that the Old Columbia Falls Pottery Store will become a General Store in August. Stay tune for more information as it becomes available.

On Sunday April 29, 2018 Carroll and I took a ride down to Jasper Beach just to get out and enjoy the good day. If you have not been there yet this year, check it out as the road and parking area has been renovated.
Don’t forget to apply for your moose permit, only a few more days till the 15th to apply.
On Monday April 30, Dawn Bragg of Columbia Falls ran into a traveler (he was walking across the country pushing a small carriage type rig with all his gear) at Columbia Falls P.O. He got permission to pitch his tent at the town landing that evening.
His name is Eric Keeler from England. He flew to Boston than caught a ride to Lubec. He left Lubec on Sunday and arrived in Columbia Falls on Monday April 30, 2018. Eric is raising money for Spinal Cord Research. He will be traveling to the west coast border with Mexico, covering around 4,000 miles in 7 months and he will end up in San Diego hopefully before Christmas.
He is now traveling towards Niagara Falls. You can follow his progress on Run Across America at www.c2C.run.
Carroll and I were in Bangor for his check up on Wednesday. The heat wave that day was really something and I was glad to get back home to a bit cooler weather.
The rainy weather has helped to green up the lawn; the deer has been around eating my lilies in front of my porch. You just can’t have anything growing as they eat it. I guess we will have to fence in our property with a 10 foot fence and then maybe we can keep them out. Of course with my luck they will be pole jumpers and get in anyway.
The Hannah Weston Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution held their monthly meeting at the Burnham Tavern on Saturday May 5 with thirteen members. Our guest speaker was Kerri Sternberg who talked about the “We Care Community Baby Center” in Machias.

I was busy foraging for my food this past week and was able to put up some dandelions that I dug on Friday. A fresh mess is always good for what ails you.
I found on the internet of the health benefits of dandelions include relief from liver disorders, diabetes, urinary disorders, acne, jaundice, cancer and anemia. It also helps in maintaining bone health, skin care and is a benefit to weight loss programs. So there you have it, you heard it from me first.
My internet was down this past week and after calling about it, I even got an upgrade on the speed plus my bill went down. So hopefully everything will be better for me in the long run. The young man that came to fix my problems was from the Fryeburg/Stow area. He is in the area working for the phone company. Very knowledgeable and taught me a lot about my IPad and how to keep it running smoothly. While in chatting with him, he saw that I was canning and asked a lot of questions on how to do it.
If you’re traveling on the Ridge Road in Columbia just off Route 1 please note that by the fourth telephone pole is a bad place the culvert has dropped and you may break your vehicle, supposedly the town has been called as someone put out some orange flagging tape which you cannot see after dark. Hopefully someone will come and fix it; I understand they have 24 hours to fix it once it is called in. Another place on the same road has a side that has washed out with the rain, that could be dangerous as well as it probably has undermined the rest of the road.in that area. Here’s hoping that it will all be fixed this coming week.

On Friday morning May 11, Narraguagus hosted the Acadia Brass Ensemble for district-wide 3rd & 4th graders, grades 5-12 band students and the Narraguagus Singers. This event was sponsored by Machias Savings Bank as part of the Meet the Music Makers Program. This was a wonderful experience for everyone and I myself really enjoyed hearing them.
My daughter on Saturday morning brought us some more smelts that she had caught the night before. I took a bag full to Lita Bagley in Columbia Falls and visited with her for a while.
Saturday was a busy day for me as I took inventory of my food supply in the cellar to see what I may need to put up this year. Not a thing as I have plenty all put up. No garden for me this year, but I did see in one spot that the lettuce reseeded themselves so if the deer doesn’t get them maybe we will have some fresh lettuce anyway.

Out and About
On Mother’s Day Carroll and I traveled to Beals Island to get the Mother’s Day special at Bayview Takeout. We were glad that we went early as so many others arrived as we were leaving for the same special deal. Later that afternoon we headed to Ellsworth to do some errands and we stopped into several places so I could check out their shrubs and flowers. I think everyone else had the same idea as we did.
On Tuesday May 15, my husband mowed on the lawn for the first time this year. Now the work will begin for the summer as the grass grows quicker now and probably the lawn will need to be mowed every three days to keep it looking nice.
On Tuesday evening I attended the Milbridge Historical Society meeting where we discussed the upcoming yard sale on June 2 from 8 to noon and getting our speakers finalized. Stay tune and as soon as I know I will let you know.
The Milbridge Museum will be open Saturdays and Sundays 1-4 pm through June and then in July and August it will be open on Tuesdays, Saturdays & Sundays 1-4 pm. The summer exhibit is about the history of service stations/garages in Milbridge. The exhibit has a lot of interesting artifacts, photos and information. Thank you goes out to Terry & Cindy Rumery and Bob Stanley for putting this exhibit together.
On Thursday evening five members attended the Pleasant River Historical meeting at Grace Falzarano in Columbia Falls. Discussion on contacting speakers for the summer meetings is still on going. We also discussed our newest fund raiser that involves publishing a poster showing a colored picture of the lobster buoys that are used within the Pleasant River Bay Watershed.
We will want a photo of your lobster buoy with your name to use. The Towns of Addison, Columbia Falls, Columbia and Harrington will be on it. We are in hopes that we can get this done by Fall if not sooner.
We have a list from the DMR of people who have lobster licenses in these towns. If you know of any adult lobster fisherman or woman that is not on the list we will still want them.
We will be stopping by to get a photo of your buoy for us to use to go by.
For Addison folks you can send me a photo via text if you want at 598-7502, Columbia/Columbia Falls via Tony/Robin Santiago at 546-5464 and Harrington via Chuck Hammond at 598-7274.

Out and About
On Sunday the 20, Carroll and I rode all over Addison to take pictures of buoys that I need for the Pleasant River Historical Society poster that we will be doing. We did get 22 photos but have more to go. Thanks to Justin Thompson for getting some for me. That was a big help to me. I have enjoyed talking with folks as I go along to find their buoys. Thanks also go out to the ones that are sending photos via messenger to me.
Nancy Collectables on the Wescogus Rd is now open for the season. She will be changing her wares every week so there should be something new each week that we can’t live without. Stop by and check her out, I have already.
On May 20th my grandson Asa Washburn turned 6 years old. School mates, friends and family attended his party on Saturday the 19 at the school playground where he goes to school. The rain held off till noon time. On Sunday Asa and his sister Mabel enjoyed visiting the inside play ground for an added fun time.
Richard Paul has been having his barn and El roof shingled this past week.
My physical therapy is almost over on my shoulder. My therapist has done a wonderful job in getting my shoulder almost back to normal. I have been going twice a week since the first of March for it.
I am trying to get some spring cleaning done around here. Probably spring will be over before much else is done. For some unknown reason there is not enough time in a day to get everything I think I need to get done.
We had some hail as large as marbles on May 22, 2018, Wednesday on the East Side Road in Addison. It came down so heavy that I pulled to the side of the road and stopped as the visibility was bad. The students on my bus did not know what to think. I thought the hail was going to dent the bus.

Out and About
On Sunday the 3rd Carroll and I took a ride out to check on the cemeteries and I got to work on my Grant grandparents lot in the Ruggles Cemetery in Columbia Falls. You could not even read the words it was so covered in moss. After working on it for quite a while I was able to get it so now it can be read. What a chore that was to do and thank goodness the wind was blowing to keep the black flies away.  From there we traveled to the Columbia Cemetery and watered the flowers on many family lots that I had water for. I usually carry up to six gallons with me when I go. We checked out the stones that I cleaned last fall and how nice they were looking.
On Monday June 4, the 2nd grade class of DW Merritt enjoyed a field trip to Roque Bluff even though it was a bit chilly.
On Tuesday June 5 the Narraguagus Class of 2018 dedicated their yearbook to my class of 1968, the first class to graduate from the new Narraguagus building. I represented the class and received a copy of this year’s year book and a diploma that said “50 Years Under The Dome”, Narraguagus High School. This certifies that Ronie L Worcester has successfully completed all of the requirements for graduation, then and now, and is hereby awarded this 50th year anniversary diploma.  Quite a surprise to receive these as I was not expecting anything.
On Saturday evening June 2, 2018 I attended the Senior Prom as the representative for our class and did the Grand March with the Greg Grant. It has been awhile since I have done the Grand March; a fun thing to do that has been done for 50 years at every Prom. Bob and Helene Hammond lead the Grand March.
On Wednesday we had to travel to Bangor for one of Carroll’s doctor appointments which always takes up the full day, so I had to take off from work. While there I did get to do a bit of shopping before we had lunch at the Olive Garden.
On Thursday evening June 7, 2018 I attended the 2018 Class Night and was again recognized as an 1968 graduate. I am sure I will not have to do this again except in a few years when my grandson Konner graduate.
We also had a lovely ramp built so that Carroll can get in and out better, plus the lawn mower got fixed after I got new blades for it. So now Carroll can keep the lawn looking great.
This has been a busy week for us, of course I guess every week is busy around here. School will be out for the summer on June 15. I am sure there won’t be enough time to get everything I want to do while we are on school break

Out and About
Congratulations to our grandniece Abigail Plummer on her recent graduation from Washington Academy. A graduation party was held at the home of Sarah-Ann and Parris Hammond’s home in Harrington on Saturday June 9, 2018. Family and friends gathered for the afternoon cook out. The weather was great that day. Carroll and I enjoyed visiting with folks that attended.
Sunday the 10th Carroll and I took a ride up to Schoodic Lake in the afternoon after I plated a few hostas alongside the ramp in hopes to beautify the lawn. On our way back we noticed that Frog Rock was being repainted and the people that were doing it was doing a great job.
On Monday the 11th we again headed to Bangor for Carroll’s doctor appointment at EMMC, just another day on the road. It seems that we were in Ellsworth two times during the week and then I was again on Thursday evening with the soft ball team for their outing.
The open house at the new General Store in Columbia Falls had a great turn out. I stopped in for a bit, they are planning on being open on August 9th.
They will have Maine made goods, local produce and foods. Stay tuned for more info as it comes out.
School is now out for the summer as June 15 was the last day. I even turned my bus in for the summer.
A big turnout to the Milbridge Historical Society meeting on Tuesday evening. The speakers were Robert Stanley and Terry Rumery remembering old garages in Milbridge. Charlie Phinney and Peter Sawyer added some information as well. The display in the museum is on old garages of Milbridge.
I had a busy day on Saturday the 16 as I attended a County-wide Conference on Digitization and Preservation Issues at the General Bryant E. Moore Center in Ellsworth. An all-day workshop. We had Adam C. Fisher, Director of Collections Development and Digital Initiatives at the Maine State Library talk on “Digitization and Discovery- today’s Golden Age for Genealogy”, and “Getting Started with a Digital Project”.
BJ Jamieson – Maine Genealogical Society, and Reference and Special Collections Librarian at the Belfast Free Library, spoke on “Making Collections Visitor-Friendly” and “More Than Just Scanning”.
Bill Plaskon & Donald Woodward – talk was on “The Jonesport Historical Society Archives and Cemeteries Database”
Ann Durgin spoke on “Climbing the Ladder: Bringing Order to Historical Society Holdings”.
Those that attended were from: Addison, Augusta, Bangor, Belfast, Bass Harbor, Carmel, Cranberry Isles, Eastbrook, Ellsworth, Franklin, Hancock, Holden, Jonesport, Kenduskeag, Lamoine, Old Town, Orland, Penobscot, Prospect Harbor, Roque Bluffs, Saco, Seal Cove, SW Harbor, Surry, Swan’s Island, Waltham and Winter Harbor.
Later in the evening I enjoyed getting together with Jan and Steve Morrisons, June and Harry Rolfe and Peter Sawyer in Milbridge. Later I was able to hear the Midnight Rose Band at the Union Hall, Columbia Falls for an hour before retuning home. Another busy day had ended for me.
On Sunday morning June 17, 2018 I attended the Hannah Weston Chapter DAR and Wreaths Across America Remembrance Service of the men and woman who came to the defense of Machias on June 12, 1775 held at the Balsam Valley Chapel on Route One, Jonesboro, Maine. In the afternoon I took Carroll out for a Father’s Day lunch at Bayview Take Out on Beals Island.

Out and About
Monday June 18 all district employees of SAD 37 attended a workshop at the high school on using Fire Extinguishers and Mandated Reporting then at noon we had our annual BBQ for the year followed by the recognition ceremony.
Carroll and I were in Ellsworth on Wednesday for his appointments which took all afternoon to do. It seems we are in Ellsworth a lot lately, I would rather stay home than go there.
I have begun to work on the lawn with the push lawn mower as our riding mower is kaput. Maybe I will get in a lot of exercise now as it will take a while to do as I do the lawn in sections. Of course, after mowing with the push mower I wore it out and had to get a new one. It seems things are breaking down around here. Hopefully the grass doesn’t grow to much in between when I am able to mow.
The weather has been strange I think this summer, it is usually quite chilly in the evenings where you think you might have to put on your winter coat. It is not to bad during the day if you’re out working in the yard.
On Saturday the 23 the Milbridge High School Alumni met at the Milbridge Elementary School for their annual meeting with 32 in attendance. The meal was catered by Good & Plenty of Milbridge. Carroll and I enjoyed socializing with them all plus we won two door prizes.
A moose was seen on the Ridge Rd, Sunday morning. Hoping it stays around to keep the deer away. My father said where you see moose there won’t be many deer. I know at home growing up we never saw deer around the homestead but always saw moose. I remember once when my two older children were very little I told them that a moose was a granddaddy deer, come to find out one of them was quite old when they found out the truth that a granddaddy deer was a moose.
I have seen several deer this past week in my driveway and out back of my house almost every day. I opted to not have a garden this year as it was going to take a lot of effort to keep them out of my garden. Last year they broke down my fence and ate everything. Of course, I will miss the fresh vegetables but that is okay. I do have plenty of canned vegetables in the cellar.
I found that my lettuce had reseeded it self in my small raised bed that is behind my house and we are enjoying now. I do have three cherry tomato plants growing in it so I guess this is my garden.
The Paul’s next door have been enjoying a visit from their son Gordon and his family recently over the weekend.

Out and About
On June 26 we saw the moose that has been hanging around the area, it was in my yard and I got a photo of it. Thank goodness I did not have any clothes hanging out on the clothesline as it walked right under it. I would say that the moose was not to healthy by the way it looked. Any way it was a nice surprise to see one up close.
The deer is still around, I saw one in the tree line the other morning when I opened up my door to let Jasper the cat out.
The rain that we got on Sunday & Monday has helped everything to grow. I got my lawn mowed just before it rained so now it looks good a bit greener. It seems that in the winter while shoveling snow we wish it to be summer, so we can mow the lawn. To me there is less shoveling than mowing my lawn as we mow quite a bit. With the rider mower broke it is now up to me to use the new push mower I got to do the mowing.
The weather has been pretty good for drying clothes outside.
On Monday evening I stopped by for a visit with Lita Bagley, it is always a pleasure to visit with her as we get caught up on some of the family news.

Out and About
We finally got rain to help with the dry spell we were having, at least my lawn looks a bit better as it is not so dry. It sure did help my neighbor’s gardens by everything growing faster.
I have been making some soup and canning it for my husband, so it will be an easy meal for him while I am off visiting the grandchildren in Boston. I also put meals in the refrigerator freezer and vegetables from the cellar on the cook stove. He won’t starve while I am off and out and about.
Saturday evening June 30, Carroll and I attended the Columbia Falls High School alumni reunion at the Columbia Town Hall. My class of 1968 was one of the honored classes this evening. There were 55 alumni and guests that attended. The OceanAires directed by Gary Magby sang ten songs during the social hour before the meal.
The slate of officers will remain the same for another year, with Marvin Look as President, 1st Vice-President- Roberta Hammond, Secretary – Mary Ann Nichols and Treasurer – Bun Ward.
A Memorial Service for eleven alumni was read by Mary Ann Look to pay tribute to those who have gone on before us during the last year.
The scholarship for this year’s recipient went to Brittany Church of Columbia Falls.
Next year’s Reunion will be held on Saturday June 29 and at this time they will decide if they will dissolve or continue.
Julia Worcester of Columbia Falls was the oldest and only alumni that attended for the class of 1949.
We were one of the lucky ones to win a door prize, we won two potted plants that I brought home to put out side to brighten up the yard.
On Wednesday July 4th we were guest at our son’s camp on Schoodic Lake in Columbia for a family gathering. The weather was quite warm, but I got to cool off in the lake a couple of times. As usually we always have to much food for the cookout.
A great day was had by all.
My wood pile is getting smaller and smaller as I work on it every day. I hope to have it in the shed before the month is over.

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX SENT TO OUT AND ABOUT FOLKS;

July 13, 2018
Out and About
On Saturday July 7 the Hannah Weston Chapter of DAR held their meeting at the Cates House in Machiasport. Bob Hammond of Harrington was the guest speaker for the day, he spoke on local history and ship building of the area. Eighteen members attended and two guests.
Milbridge Historical Society held a first-time event on Sunday July 8, 2018 at the Museum in Milbridge. Folks gathered to view the antique autos, and also checked out the display in the museum on "Remembering our Gas/Service Stations" while enjoying a first-time barbecue cook out. The museum is open on Sunday, Tuesday and Saturdays in July and August from 1-4 pm.
On Tuesday the 10th I took Huddy Peterson of Harrington to her appointment in Ellsworth. We had a great time talking and laughing to and from Ellsworth. This was a good rest day for me as I could not work around the home front. I had worn myself out the day before.
I enjoy mowing the lawn, the smell of the fresh cut grass and the yard looking so neat when I am finished. This time I finished it in one day as I used the riding lawn mower.
I actually took my husband out for a ride and on our return, I stopped so he could see how nice it looked from the road. I drove him to the back, so he could check out the yard from that view point and see how our Cherryfield heritage apple tree was doing. I must attend to that as soon as I get the time to work outside again and after the wood is all put into the shed for the winter months.
I wonder sometimes how if I had decided to have a garden this year when I would have time to work in it. I don’t think I would have had the time. Some days I think I need to make myself an appointment for myself to do things that I really want to do and go and do it.
On Tuesday evening I did go to the Milbridge Historical Society meeting and heard guest speaker Arthur Boatin give a talk about his wife, Elaine Ford’s writings. What can I say about the talk; well it was very interesting as Mr. Boatin spoke of how they came to Milbridge from Massachusetts and then ended up living here for sixteen years and became part of the community. That his wife wrote short stories of Maine and that in some we will find references to things that happened in Milbridge even though Milbridge was not mentioned anywhere in the book.
One reading we guessed that she wrote about Kelco’s Wreath Factory and another we figured it was about McClellon Park. So, if you get the chance find her book called “This Time Might be Different” and do a little investigating to see if you can figure out who she wrote about and where it is in Milbridge, Maine. I know it is now on my list of books to read and so it should be on yours.
The week has flown by quickly and on Wednesday I decided to attend the Cherryfield Congregational Church supper that was having a full turkey dinner on the menu. Lots of folks gathered for the find food and the summer folks were back socializing with everyone to get caught up on what was happening in the area. It is always a treat to visit with the Bass Harbor crowd that comes. This week a few new folks attended for their first time, one couple was Joe and Sharon Tibbetts from Columbia who sat at the same table I was on. Another great meal that the church put on is in the books.
Thursday evening, I attended the Jonesport Historical Society meeting. Allen Lockyer was the guest speaker for the evening. His topic was on the 29 surviving country stores between Ellsworth and Machias and showed slides of the country stores that were open in 1988 and the ones that are still open today. He wrote the book Clamdiggers and Downeast Country Stores: Eastern Maine’s Vanishing Culture (Northern Lights Inc. 1993).

Out and About
Art Scipione of Rogue Bluff was guest speaker for the Pleasant River Historical Society on Friday evening July 13 at the Addison Community Building. Thirty folks gathered to hear Art speak and show slides on Early American tools used by our early tradesmen to build our homes, barns, and ships from 1600-1900.
On Friday the 13th I headed for Boston to visit with my grandchildren Asa and Mabel who were awaiting my arrival for a fun full week of activities.
While I was there we visited different parks for the children to play at and went swimming at Houghton Lake one afternoon. On Friday we went to the Franklin Zoo to see the dinosaur display that will be there till September before moving to some other Zoo. These dinosaurs were truly believable as they moved and made noises, a couple spat out water as we walked by. The children went around at least three times to see them, then we moved onto the bird sections and saw lots of parrots and other exotic birds. After going through that we headed for the play area for the children to run off some of their energy.
The last place we visited was the butterfly area where inside there were little fairy houses throughout the section and lots of butterflies flying around. I have visited this zoo about every time I visit but this was a first for the birds, butterflies and dinosaur exhibit.
While I was there I helped Diadem weed her flower beds and plant a few other plants that she had available. Her front flower beds are really filling in nicely with her vines she added last summer.
My week went fast with all the children’s activities they wanted to do with Nana Ronie.
I returned home on Saturday evening with my daughter and her children who were spending a few days with us in Addison. On our way home, we met up with Diadem’s friend Kate and her little boy Aiden at the Knowlton Playground in Ellsworth for a couple of hours to run some energy off the kids where they had been in the vehicle for a number of hours.
Where it was getting late we stopped at Pizza Hut to get the children their favorite meal – pizza before continuing onto home.
On Sunday we all attended the Masonic Lodge lobster feed Ricky Dorr’s lobster pound and the children also visited their aunt Michelle McLaughlin during the day. We ended up with an ice cream at Pleasant River Take Out in Columbia Falls. Before returning home the children enjoyed playing on the playground at DW Merritt School.

Out and About
What a busy week I have had; the grandchildren were here for three days keeping me busy. On Sunday we all attended the Masonic Lodge lobster cookout on Bar Island in Milbridge. Even though it rained off and on we still enjoyed our lobsters and clams.
On Monday we went hiking at Petit Manan and then took the children to Cape Split to find shells along the beach on Tuesday. They also enjoyed going for ice cream, hamburgers and hot dogs along with the ham dinner they wanted me to make for them. They got to visit with their aunt Michelle and go four wheeling and swimming in her pool. They love coming to Maine playing outside, feeding the neighbors chickens and snacking on the Paul’s raspberries. Another vacation with Nana and Papa in the books.
On Wednesday the grandchildren headed to Penobscot for a few days before they return to their home in Boston.
Asa and his grandfather Arthur Washburn attended Roosevelt scout camp on July 26, 27, 28 for the first time in a new program. I am awaiting news now to see how Asa liked his first time at scout camp.
On Wednesday the 25th, Clara Anne Freeman and I traveled to Sugar Loaf for the Maine Association for Pupil transportation State Safety Conference for 2018 returning on Friday July 27.
Classes that we took were: “All Aboard for Safety Training”, “Vision-Mindset-Grit”, “Understanding the Special Needs of our passengers and of Our Operation”, Understanding Maine’s Anti-Bullying Law”, and ”Addressing Bullying Behavior”, “ School Bus Evacuation Ready”,”PreTrip Inspections”, and “Active Threat Response & the School Bus”.

Out and About
On Saturday July 28, Carroll and I attended the parade in Milbridge and the lobster feed at the Milbridge fire house; afterwards we visited the Cherryfield Historical Society museum on Water Street in Cherryfield.
The Grand Marshall for the parade was Muriel Beal 100 years old. She is a life time of the VFW Post 11553, Harrington, Maine. She now resides at Narraguagus Bay in Milbridge.
On our way home, we both got an ice cream in Columbia Falls, then checked out the Merritt Cemetery in Addison to see how that was looking and I was hoping to see some folks there working on the cemetery. I guess I missed them.
Later in the evening I attended the Jonesport annual meeting held at the Community Church of Christ. It was a great way to socialize with all the folks that make the Historical Society work and I met some new folks at the table I was at for the program.
I received word that my grandson Asa Washburn attended the “Small & Tall” program at Camp Roosevelt in East Eddington this past week. He had a great time with his Papa Washburn. We now have another generation interested in joining scouts. I suspect he will be going again next year.
Sunday morning, I was outside mowing my lawn and trying to spruce up around the ramp when I had visitors arrive. They, Nancy (Merritt) Hayward, Sharon and Sarah Williams had been over to the Merritt Cemetery in Addison tending to some of their ancestor’s graves. It was great to say hi to them as they traveled onto the next cemetery they will visit while in the area.
On Sunday afternoon the 29th, Carroll and I attended the 90th birthday party for Madelyn Phinney of Milbridge at the Sea Worthy Event Center. Afterwards we visited the Strout Lookout Camp at Schoodic Lake for a short visit before heading home.
It’s that time of year for the bus drivers to get their physical before school starts. Thank goodness I got mine done for the coming year. Plus, I also will be caught up on my eye examination on August 2 so I can see those darling children getting on my bus.
Carroll and I were in Ellsworth on August 2 for my appointment and to get a few things at Walmart that we needed.
Condolences go out to the families of Joanne Smith of Milbridge and Eleanor Galen of Wesley.
Thinking of you wishes goes out to the families of Robert Stanley, Colon Smith and Dwayne Smith.

Out and About
When your having fun with four grandchildren, the week goes by to fast.. Every day blends into the next so here goes: On Friday August 10 on our way back from Lamont Lake in Wisconsin we stopped into the Fawn-Doe-Rosa Wildlife Park in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin where the children could feed the deer from their hands. They also saw caribou, donkeys, ponies, llamas, pigs, ducks and other birds.
On Sunday August 12 we all went to Lake Minnetonka Regional Park.
This park is the biggest play area for children that Asa and Mabel have ever seen or played on. Oliver was some proud that he went down the big slide and climbed the rope ladder just like his cousins did. Little Gavin also enjoyed his first time in this park chasing the others and trying to do what they did.
On Monday the 13 we took the children to the Children Museum for the day where they had lots of fun checking out everything
On Tuesday the 14 we went to St. Paul Minnesota Zoo  as the weather man said it was going to be the coolest day of the week. They saw a snow monkey, grizzly bear, brown and black bear, moose, Amur tiger Amur leopard, wild boar, caribou, Takin, bison, prairie dogs, Bactrian camel, Asian wild horses, prairie dogs, bison,  tigers, penguins, and kangaroos and other strange animals that we had not ever seen before.
It was still pretty hot for all of us but the children got to go into the splash pad to cool off before we left. Another fun day for them to do things together. Bed time came quick after this trip for them all.
We had a few down time days in between as we all needed to rest up for the next adventure. All of the cousins got to play outside everyday running around in the back yard, we also took them on walks in the neighborhood and found a Mini Library where I was able to find a couple of books to read in the evening.
Our vacation was soon coming to an end as we had Wednesday as a rest day at home and Thursday would be our last full day with the Strout family in Minnesota before flying back to Boston on Friday, and I would be returning back to Addison on Saturday.

On Thursday August 23rd at 6:30p.m. at the Jonesport Historical Society at 21 Sawyer Square, Gordon Corbett, author of the book “Keeper of the Light”, will present “Machias Seal Island – You Can Get There From Here!” .
Gordon’s connection and interest in Machias Seal Island is from his many travels to the island with Captains Purcell Corbett on the Audubon Queen, Barna Norton on the Chief, and Andy Patterson on the Barbara Frost. Stories about life on the island, Captain Norton’s endeavors to reclaim the island from Canada, sharing breakfast with puffins, and other stories from Jonesport, Cutler and Grand Manan should provide an hour of both information and entertainment.

Out and About
I am now back home from my vacation and back to the chores that needs to be done. The lawn finally got mowed which it needed as it had not been mowed for two weeks. Where my two gardens were I now keep mowed and have turned them into part of my lawn. They are a lot easier to mow than weed.
On Sunday August 19, 2018 I attended the Tracy Reunion in Gouldsboro along with 35 Jonathan Tracy descendants. It was great seeing everyone again this year. Some were unable to attend and there were some new ones that came. The furthest came from California. The oldest was Yvonne Moore a lovely lady at 90 years old. I seem to run into her lately at every place I go.
The auction went well, I had to bid on a few things that I thought I needed to bring home with me. Two charcoal paintings of husband and wife Henry Jellison Havey born 1842 father of Lillian Havey Tracy and his wife Laura Etta Rolfe These photos  were given to the Tracy Reunion folks. I posted these on line and found out that their names were changed to Hovey and got a lot of information on them.  I just can't believe folks getting rid of their ancestor pictures unless there are no one left alive that wants them.
I had four bags of beans delivered to me the beginning of the week that I was able to get 34 quarts put up for the winter. I think this will carry me through the winter till next summer.
On Tuesday afternoon we took a ride up on the blueberry barrens so Carroll could check out the harvesters that were working. The blueberries looked really good and we got some to taste while we were there.
On Wednesday Carroll and I were in Gouldsboro for his checkup and then stopped at Vazquez Mexican Take Out in Milbridge for a light supper. Afterwards we topped it off with an ice cream at Pleasant River Take Out in Columbia Falls.
On Wednesday August 22, 2018 my daughter Michelle McLaughlin and my grandson Konner Strout flew to Minnesota for a visit with Zebadiah, Molly, Oliver and Gavin Strout
On Thursday we ventured to Ellsworth for another appointment in the morning. It seems that these doctor appointments keep happening over and over. On our way home we took a ride up on the barrens again and checked out the harvesters.

Michelle McLaughlin and Konner Strout has returned home from their visit in Minnesota with Zeb and Molly Strout.
Jonesport Historical Society, On Thursday evening August 23 a full house turned out to hear speaker Gordon Corbett, author of the book “Keeper of the Light” give a talk on ”Machias Seal Island – You Can Get There From Here”. His connection to the island is from his Uncle Captain Purcell Corbett and Captain Barna Norton. He told stories about the life on the island and of Captain Norton’s endeavors to reclaim the island from Canada. Corbett also gave information on the puffins that reside there and other wild life.
The Pleasant River Historical Society met at Chuck & Roberta Hammond’s on Friday evening the 24 with eight members present. Discussion was on the upcoming event on Local History Round Table Discussion at the Union Hall on Sunday September 9th at 7 p.m.
Those that attended at the Hammond’s home were: Tony and Robin Santiago, Grace Falzarano, Jeannette Perry, Cathy Fonda, and Ronie Strout.
I enjoyed a delightful evening out with Steve and Jan Morrison’s of Milbridge on Saturday evening the 25th along with Peter Sawyer and Harry Rolfe. Conversation is always interesting when you can catch up on the local news in the area from everyone.
I have been out working in the yard trying to get caught up with shrubs and trees that needed to have work done around their trunks. I of course chose a hot day to do it and in doing so almost got heat exhaustion. As far as I can see every day was hot so I did not have much choice on what day to do it. If I wait till it cools off I am sure other things will need to be done then.
I drove the golf team to Deer Isle on Tuesday the 28, when we left Harrington the heat index was very high and when we finally arrived at Island Country Club golf course the temperature was a lot cooler. While the team was playing golf I sat on the veranda in a rocking chair enjoying the peace and quiet around me.
Another hot and humid week and it looks like this kind of weather will be with us for another week.
School in our district will be starting on September 4, so watch out for the children waiting for the bus on your way to work.
Condolences go out to the family of Francis (Frank) M Jones of Addison.

Out and About

Debbi Winters stopped by on Friday August 24 to see if I could help her on some genealogy and to understand her 23 & Me DNA. We actually spent almost five hours talking,, visiting and catching up on other news. We met at the Tracy Reunion last year and have kept in touch throughout the year via Facebook, email and phone.
On August 29 and 30 all of the employees of SAD 37 attended workshops to get ready for the upcoming school year. The bus drivers attended theirs on August 30.
Nancy Haskell contacted me on the 29 for some information that had to do with genealogy on the Seldon Strout line. I was able to find some on it to share with her and her sister Julie Wyles.
On Friday the 31st Carroll and I took a ride down the East Side Rd, South Addison and Cape Split hunting for some more lobster buoys to take pictures of for the poster that the Pleasant River Historical Society is gathering for. I still have a few more to find.
We are trying to contact everyone to get a picture of their buoys, if you know of anyone that I have not gotten yet please contact me ASAP, as I need all by the end of September.
I still need to get the following: Scott Alley, Aaron and Chester Barrett, Richard Couture, Brent Davis, Douglas Dodge, Wayne Look, David Merchant, Richard Norton Sr., Dana L Parker, Jessica Redimarker, Michael Smith, and Kevin Tozier.
Get well wishes to Douglas Reynolds who is now home recuperating. I had stopped in for a quick visit while I was out and about getting lobster buoy pictures and visited with him.
A surprise 40th birthday party was given to Joshua Paul on Saturday September 1 at his parents house on the Ridge. Friends and family turned out for it. He did not surmise anything till he landed there after meeting up with two of his brothers in Milbridge. Joshua said that this took him by surprise as he had never had an adult birthday party before now and he thought that the last birthday party was when he turned five years old.
Carroll and I attended the Blue Hill Fair this year on Sunday. Carroll got his food and I got to check out the Midway. Three hours was about all we could stand before we headed home. On our way home we stopped into the Book Barn for a look see. I always like to browse a bit to see if there is anything that I think I need.
We were in Ellsworth on Tuesday September 4 for an appointment and a quick stop at Walmart for Carroll between my bus run.
I have been putting up pickles and piccalilli with the abundance of cucumbers and tomatoes that have been given to me. Nothing will go to waste here.
My wood pile is getting smaller as I work on putting wood in when it is not to hot for me. It probably won’t be long before that old wood stove will be fired up. Guess it is time to check the chimney and the stove to make sure it is safe and order the oil for the winter.

Out and About
You can tell that school has started with the students starting their school sports, practices and games. They and their parents are now on the run everyday getting their children to and from all of the activities.
Carroll and I were in Ellsworth on Saturday shopping for a new vehicle, we later enjoyed a meal at Governors before returning home.
Sunday the 9th was a busy day for me, I finally got my wood all in and then cleaned up the yard where it was. This was an all day job. Later in the afternoon we attended a birthday party for Carroll’s nephew Jonathan Plummer at his sister’s home Sarah Ann Hammond in Harrington.
On Sunday evening about twenty eight folks turned out for the Pleasant River Historical Meeting held at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls. Nancy Willey spoke on the Epping Base Line and Robert Hammond spoke on the Shaw family of Harrington.
Pleasant River Historical Society will sponsor a guided tour to The Epping Base Line with Nancy Willey as our Historian. You will learn the history of this important road and experience glacial deposit along the barrens. Bring your camera! Saturday September 29, 2018, 9:00 am.
Charge is $15.00 per person. Bring your own box lunch. The bus tour will depart from Union Hall in Columbia Falls at 9 a.m.
Seating is limited so sign up soon to reserve your seat by contacting Ronie Strout at 483-4374 or email her at roniestrout@yahoo.com.
On Tuesday evening September 11, 2018 the Milbridge Historical Society held their last public meeting for the season with Chris Kuhni and Zabet NeuCollins speaking on the current work and the vision for the future of the Milbridge Commons Project.
The Cherryfield Congregational Church public supper was a hit Wednesday evening with the chicken pot pie and all of the fixings. It was great visiting with the folks that sat at my table and catching up on their news.
The Harrington Elementary had a Fall Mums fundraiser and 1272 Fall Mums were delivered to the school on September 13, Thursday at noon. With twenty parents and three students Konner, Matthew and Kaira from 6th grade helped unload and sorted the Fall Mums in less than an hour. What a sight to behold. This is one of their biggest fund raiser I believe.
The Elementary schools had their first Cross Country meet at the Jonesport Elementary School. A great turn out of students doing their best plus it was a perfect day to be out doors.
Tomatoes have been arriving on my deck, green and red ones. I have been processing them all week. Between the neighbors on both side of me we could feed the whole town I believe.

Out and About

On September 13 I received a phone call from Jill Kohler-Easley from Lake Oswego, Oregon. She is researching her Tibbetts line – Hillman Look Tibbetts and is looking for information on any ships with a list that he might of sailed on when he was fourteen and went to the West Coast.
I also sent some information to Marilyn W Fielding in Florida on Nathaniel Ramsdell, husband of Hepsabeth Norton Ramsdell Nash. Hopefully she got my email as she is looking for proof for her Mayflower Line she is working on.
Eastern Star Chapter Rumery #46 met Friday evening on September 14 at the Addison Masonic Hall. There were 25 members that attended.
I attended the yard sale in Columbia Falls Saturday the 15 and found some items I thought I needed. I also attended the craft fair in Columbia where I started my Christmas shopping. Hopefully it was a good day for everyone that was selling their wares.
Tuesday the 18th the NHS phys ed class went canoeing during their class time at Stillwater in Cherryfield. It was a great day to be out and about on the water.
I have been busy making mincemeat and jarring it for the winter. It is always great to get some of these things taking care of sooner than later.
Another cross country meet was held in Jonesport on Thursday afternoon. The younger runners are improving on their times. It is great to see the students take an interest in this sport.
There were not enough interest to have a genealogy class at the adult education classes at the high school. Maybe in the spring we can get more to take the class.
The weather has been cooling off lately, I hope to get some more outside work done before I begin on the inside. I have Carroll peeling apples to put in the freezer for more mincemeat that I may make later this winter if I need to.

Out and About
On Saturday the 22nd Carroll and I ventured forth to the Common Gound Fair in Unity where we met up with our daughter Diadem, her husband Jesse and children, Asa and Mabel. They volunteer every year at the Fair. The children love camping out there and working at the Fair.
We always stop in at the Amish store on our way home to have a look see and check to see if we needed anything. The day was just right not to cold nor to hot to be there. We always get there early so we can leave early in the afternoon.
On Sunday we headed to Exeter to see what was happening at the hunting camp. The folks that were there were working on the fire wood for the camp supply. Another great day to be out and about. On our way home we stopped to visit our great granddaughter Paisley. She is such a cutie and has grown so much.
Again on Monday we traveled to Ellsworth for Carroll’s appointment in the morning and then later after my bus run I had to pick up a soccer team in Jonesport and return them to their school.
Tuesday had us traveling to Bangor for another appointment for Carroll and I made it back in time to do my bus run. Thanks goodness we did not have to wait at the doctors office.
Thursday the elementary cross country team did well in Jonesport, I got to watch them as I had to return the team to their respected school afterwards.
Friday a group of students went to pick apples in Ellsworth during the day. The rain did not deter them at all.
On Friday evening the Pleasant River Historical Society met at Chuck Hammonds for a business meeting with updates on the upcoming Epping Base Line tour to be held on Saturday the 29.
As you can see I was busy most of the week and another one is looming ahead.
The Epping Base Line trip with Nancy Willey
On Saturday September 29, 2018, a foggy morning that soon burned off, sixteen folks got on a bus to hear Nancy Willey speak about the Epping Base Line in Columbia. The bus tour started at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls at 9 a.m. and we traveled up to Centerville to begin learning about kames, kettle holes, and to ride across a natural bridge.
Mrs. Willey told us that during the ice age the glacier that was two miles high came through and took our top soil and as it went it left boulders and rocks along the way and deposited the top soil in New Jersey. That is why New Jersey is called the garden state.
We were told that kames is a glacial land form that is an irregular shaped hill made up of sand and in Centerville it is found on a ridge that stretches from Cutler to the White Birches in Ellsworth.
We stopped in several place to enjoy the view from the hill, where we could see mountains to the West of us and views to the East of us.
We were told that the cemetery stones at the little cemetery that we stopped at were made of Italian marble and were called sugar stones as they dissolve over time and looks like sugar in a heap. These stones were used as ballast on ships as they came to the new world. Not many were left in this little cemetery.
We then stopped on the natural bridge to hear that the glacier had dropped ice that broke off on both side of the road forming a natural bridge through the woods.
The kettle holes that we saw we were told that they were formed from the receding glacier forming a hole where the ice from glaciers had broken off. One such kettle hole was to far down for our group to try to get to the bottom and to be able to get back out of it.
We then headed to the Station Road in Columbia to begin another point of interest in our tour.
Here we saw rock trains, made up of erratic boulders that were left by the glacier that came though here. We learned that the Great Heath was the largest heath in the United States and that we have lemmings residing there.
We traveled to the eastern monument spot and got out to hear that we were on a ridge where thousands of years ago the ocean came up this far. We could look off in the distant and could see the Atlantic Ocean. The barrens in front of us had turned different colors of red and we could see some foliage off in the distant that had started to turn colors too.
Mrs Willey informed us that the two markers that were at the beginning of the base line road were the only two left. The others over the years had disappeared along the road.
If you look ahead you will see an old tree stump looming along side of the base line and we were told that was called the lunch tree as in the earlier days when the blueberry farmers were working on their land they would take their lunch break by this tree.
As we traveled along the road we stopped at Frog Rock to stretch our legs and get a group picture. We were lucky that two folks that were out riding on the barrens stopped and became our photographer.
As we rode along we could see that the barrens were coming into their glory with the blueberry bushes turning red and because there are so many different kinds of blueberry clones the different shades made it look like a patch work quilt.
We came upon the area where the base line continues through the woods and a detour has been made to go out around that section. Further ahead we parked the bus and got out to eat our lunches. Here we could see the base line road coming out of the woods and making its way towards us.
After we had our lunch we traveled down the road to another spot where we all got out to hear Mrs. Willey tell us what we were looking at and to sing a song about purple mountains and fruited plains. Off in the distant we could see the purple mountains and of course the fruited plains were the blueberry barrens.
We then continued to the area where again the road goes into the trees where a few able body folks ventured to walk the rest of the way to the Western monument. I of course drove the bus to the entrance and parked. Here we learned that the Western monument had been removed and is now in Augusta for safe keeping from vandals. Many photos were taken with Mrs Nancy Willey and her plaque that was placed on near by on a erratic rock.
Our trip was not over as Mrs. Willey took us to Cherryfeld Ridge Road to see the Big Rock Ridge with all of the erratic rocks that we were told will never be removed and will stay as an historical example of where the glacier dropped these rocks. This was a site to behold as they stood out where the blueberry company had hayed this area to get ready to burn in the spring. This area harvesters will not be able to use their machines but hand rakers will be used instead to pick the area.
Our journey over the barrens with Mrs. Willey had now come to an end and we all enjoyed learning about the ice age that came through and about the last remaining base line on the East Coast.

Out and About
Carroll and I were in Machias on September 30 to celebrate his birthday that was on the 29 by having lunch at the Bluebird Restaurant, afterwards we traveled to Calais and then back on Route 9 to check out the foliage. This was a great day to be out and about.
We also celebrated our wedding anniversary which was October 2 on Thursday October 4 by having lunch at Scovils Millside Diner in Harrington. For now I guess that is all that we will celebrate till the next birthday that comes up. Of course it is fun to go out to eat as I don’t have to cook or clean up afterwards.
This past week I have been on two Epping Base line trips, one that was sponsored by the Pleasant River Historical Society and one for the 7th graders of SAD #37. Both of these trips were very informative to me as each person that spoke on it added a bit more of the history of the base line.
See the Epping Base Line Trip with Nancy Willey in a separate article for the history.
On top of this I also put up some spiced crab apples to try again. I use to make these years ago and loved them. I am not sure I have the correct recipe that I used all those years ago but it is still quite good.
We are saddened that our beloved cat Jasper has met his end with the bobcat that has been seen on the Ridge Road this past week. We got him from a friend that needed to re home him. He was a wonderful and loveable cat and took to our home as one of the family. He will be sadly missed and I am not sure we can ever replace him but maybe in time we will find another one just like him.
I finally got a sunny dry day on Saturday the 6th to completely mow our lawn and hopefully this will be the last time this fall. I even got some trees trimmed that needed to be done before I mowed around them.
I even passed up the chance to go to Oktoberfest in Harrington this year as I wanted this done. I did take a break and checked out the craft fair in Addison where I met up with Dale and Janice Crosby of Jonesport and chatted with them a bit. Janice said that she has done more canning this year than for quite a long time. Their garden produced a lot of vegetables that needed to be canned. I am sure they will not go hungry this year.
The ones here on the Ridge Road in Addison also will not go hungry with all that we have put up for winter.
Congratulations to Konner Strout who went bird hunting in Ashland this weekend and shot his first ruffed grouse.

Out and About
The days are going so fast, and I wonder if I am going to get everything done on my list to get ready for the cold weather that is coming our way. With this rainy weather a person cannot get much done outside.
Carroll and I took a foliage trip on Sunday the 7th and rode up on twp 19, 24 and 25, down through Wesley and had supper at the Bluebird Restaurant before returning home. Then on Monday after his appointment in Ellsworth we took a ride to Acadia national Park and because of the cruise ships that were in it was bumper to bumper all the way to the top of Mount Cadillac, needless to say I was glad to finally get out of that area and start back home.
On our way home we had one last ice cream at Jordan’s for the season.
On Wednesday the 10, I met up with my sisiter-in-law Debra Worcester Burris and we had breakfast in Milbridge and then I took her to Stillwater, in Cherryfield for her to take photos of some foliage before we stopped into the store Back in the Good Old Days. Later on in the evening I attended the last public supper for the Cherryfield Congregational Church this season. There next public supper will be June 12, 2019.
EDGE the after school program has started up for the year. The ones that stay for it are getting some home work done and doing some activities that they are enjoying.
The junior high cross country has finally ended for the season. There were a lot of students that turned out to do that. I enjoyed watching them race whenever I had the chance.
On Friday my sister-in-law Debra and I traveled to Ellsworth for my appointment that I had between my bus runs. Another nice day in being out with her. We trying to get caught up on family news. Debra is here visiting for the month with Cathy Smith and her son Quintin and family also will be coming for a visit.
Saturday the 13 was a busy day for me, I attended a Chinese auction, book sale, two craft fairs and a DAR Meeting besides a door yard visit in Cherryfield and ended the day with my husband and I having a meal at Bayview Take Out in Beals. I had checked and found out that Bayview was closing for the season and so we wasted no time getting there. Just another busy day for us.

There were twenty-two members and guest at the DAR Meeting held at the Bluebird Restaurant in Machias on Saturday the 13. We welcomed Donna La Rue from Merrimack, NH. our newest member to the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Hannah Weston Chapter.

Our guest speaker was Cheryl Willis Patten from Maine Old Cemetery Association speaking on Cemeteries,Stories of our Past and talking about what to use to clean cemetery stones and what you may find on the stones for writings.

Carole Ann Sprague and Barbara Maloy arrived at the DAR meeting with their garbs that they wore on the cancer walk that morning in Machias.

Out and About
It is that time of year that as professional bus drivers we go to the schools to do bus evacuations. Last week we did one at the D.W. Merritt School in Addison and this coming week we will be doing Harrington, Milbridge and Narraguagus High School.
On Tuesday the physical education classes went hiking at Pigeon Hill. It was a great day to be outside.
Twenty four folks turned out Saturday afternoon to hear Nancy Willey to talk about the Epping Base Line at the Washington County Genealogical & Historical Society in Machias.
Congratulations to all the youth hunters that got their deer on Saturday. Our grandson Konner Strout got his as well as Austin and Nickerson Rusecky and Ashley Stubbs. We could hear shots on the Ridge Rd. so we knew the young hunters were out and about. Hopefully the hunters cleaned up some more of the deer that has been a nuisance to us.
We were given some fresh heart and liver to enjoy for a few meals this week.
The weather is beginning to get cooler just in time for the deer hunting season that is beginning on October 27.
Saturday evening the 20 I enjoyed the evening with June and Harry Rolfe, Peter Sawyer at Jan and Steve Morrison’s home in Milbridge. The Morrison's will be returning to their home in Raleigh, North Carolina soon. We all have been enjoying the Saturday nights gathering while they have been here.
It seems when cold weather comes things begin to let go at your home. We had to replace our hot water heater this weekend and repair two sink problems that have been a nuisance to us.
Sometimes it seems things just break down in the most inconvenient time when you have other things you want to do. Of course there is no great time for any of this to happen.
Halloween will be upon us and then on November 4 we will have to set our clocks back an hour. I just wish we could leave them on daylight saving time.

Out and About
The hiking students went hiking to Tunk Mtn. Hidden Ponds on Tuesday, they got lucky and was able to hike in between rain showers.
I was in Lubec on Wednesday for my dental appointments that I had, it looks like I have several more coming up in the New Year.
On Thursday evening Carroll and I, Steve and Jan Morrison enjoyed an evening out at Good and Plenty Restaurant in Milbridge. It was great getting together for the evening. The Morrisons are heading South for the Winter soon.
The weather has turned colder quite quickly but guess that is Mother Nature for you, I now wonder if we will get some warmer days in November.
The wreath season has started up at Worcester Wreaths, when I drove by on Wednesday there were quite a few cars around the factory.
Where as Friday morning was good weather for a change even though it was windy I did get what I needed done outside. My lawnmowers are all tucked in for the winter and all the tree limbs that I clipped off moved to the burn pile. A good job done in a short period of time.
On Friday evening over thirty folks gathered at the Beals Elementary School to see the DVD movie of Head Harbor’s Sealand documented by Danny Davis of Beals.
This presentation included historical background of the early 1800’s through post WWII days, photos of the settlement and some of the people that lived there.
I found this interesting as one of my ancestors my great great grandfather Zebediah Alley lived on the island and is buried there.
One couple that came to hear this was from New York, Scott and Mary Simpson. They were here to close up their cottage in Milbridge and read about this event.
On my way home from the presentation I stopped into the Masonic Lodge in Addison and took the Haunted House tour. Alice in Wonderland was the theme this year. Another great job put on by the masons for the children and adults.
Carroll and I took a ride to Exeter on Saturday to do some heater hunting. We saw one doe deer in Harrington and one deer on the Old Addison Rd. Nothing you could shoot at. Oh well the fresh deer liver and heart that has been brought in to us will do for now.
The Harrington Elementary School Shop-a-Palooza was busy on Sunday morning. Lots of great vendors to take your money were there. I left some money there but I got a couple of nice gifts for the grandchildren.
Photo: One table at the Shop-a-Palooza in Harrington were these boys selling baseball and football cards.

Out and About
Does anyone else have a busy week like I do? It seems I am going round and round trying to get everything caught up that I think needs to be done before the colder weather comes. With all of the rain we have been getting it is hard to get outside to finish up the yard work. I am sure if I don’t get it done it will be ther ein the spring for me.
On Monday October 29, I attended the Addison Town Meeting and the selectmen meeting. Quite a few residents turned out for the 5 pm town meeting and only a few stayed for the selectmen meeting. Both was interesting to listen to. If you want to find out what is going on in your town you should go to some of their meetings. It is quite an eye opening what you find out at these.
On Tuesday October 30 I took three classes hiking on the Frank Woodward trail in Harrington. The day turned out well with the weather.
I only had fifteen kids that came for halloween treats. They did not get candy from my house as I gave out popcorn, notebooks, tissues and children books if they wanted one. The mini note books go over quite well. One student on my bus after I gave them out, remarked that she had to write in hers as soon as she got home.
On Thursday November 1 we had bus evacuations at the High School for the 7th and 8th grades. We will return in the spring to all of the schools to do another one. Thank goodness the weather was wonderful that day.
The DAR Hannah Weston Chapter met at the Veterans home in Machias for their meeting this month with 12 members present.
Our speakers were Lisa King and Marcia Jackson talking about the veterans home and what they do.
In honoring our Active Duty Servicemen, Holly Davis, chair of the DAR Project Patriot Committee will be assembling 6 Care Packages to send to servicemen and women currently serving our country. She told us a little about the ones that she has chosen this year to send to. The members of Hannah Weston Chapter brought in items that she requested to place in each box. These boxes will be sent out in time for the packages to arrive before Christmas.
Holly has done this for several years and we thank her for her volunteering her time to do this.
After the meeting I visited with Dick Grant, one of the veterans there, we had a great visit together. I will have to get down another day to drop in on him.
Craft fairs are now going on every weekend and I did manage to attend the one at the High School in Harrington and found a couple of items for Christmas presents. I also stopped by the Jonesboro Elementary School for their Chinese Auction on my way home from Machias.
This week of November 4 has gone quite quick, The weather was great on Wednesday to go out and about with my sister-in-law Debra Worcester Burris. We first enjoyed having breakfast together in Milbridge, than I took her on a tour of Addison. We traveled to South Addison, Cape Split and then back to Columbia Falls. We stopped at Blueberry Land so she could take photos, than onto the Veterans Museum in Columbia Falls for a tour. Afterwards we rode out to the Balsam Chapel so she could see that.
Debra will be traveling on Friday November 9 to Boston and will stay overnight at my daughters home before flying out to California to her home. Hopefully she will be back next summer for another few weeks and I can take her on some other mini trips of the area.
I have been working on a poster of all fishermen and women buoys who fishes out of the Pleasant River Bay from the towns of Addison, Columbia, Columbia Falls, and Harrington for the Pleasant River Historical Society. This poster will be quite colorful with all the different colors of buoys. It will be headed to the artist this coming week and if I am successful there will be 151 on the poster. As soon as they go to the printer we will get the word out where you may buy one or two for Christmas gifts.

Out and About
On Friday, November 9th, 2018 the Veterans Day Ceremony at Narraguagus Jr./Sr. High School honored two veterans: Parris Hammond & Walter Kennedy for their service
The program consisted of the Welcome by Ms. Lucile Willey, Principal, Pledge of Allegiance by Armando Tort hernandez, The Star Spangled Banner” by the music teacher Michael Milazzo, A Tribute to the Armed Services” by the Narraguagus Singers, Independentia March by Narraguagus Band with a Veteran’s Day Video by Mrs Lisa Emerson.
God Bless the USA sung by Debbie Kelley, “What is a Veteran’s Wreath” Video by Wreaths Across America, Moment of Silence by Armando Tort Hernandez and Taps by George Brace.
Friday evening the Rumery Chapter #46 Order of the Eastern Star met for their stated meeting in Addison with eight members attended. A lovely supper was serve before the meeting.
Kelley Hinkle was the guest speaker for the evening. He spoke on what was happening with Wreaths Across America.
Craft fairs that my neighbor Sherry Paul and I attended Saturday were: one in Jonesbor at the Union Church Community Building and one in Machiasport at the Fort O’brian School. I found something at both. For a rainy day there were lots of folks out to both of them.
Carroll and I were in Ellsworth & Gouldsboro on Monday for his appointment and on Tuesday I was in Ellsworth for my appointment. Afterwards my driver and I had dinner at China Hill before we returned home.
Our power was out on Wednesday for quite some time. The high winds I guess took down some more trees. Thank goodness that we have our wood stove to cook on and heat with. I had filled my wood box up so I would not do any lugging and tugging for a few days after my procedure. I try to be prepared when ever I think the power is going to be out or when I am under the weather.
On Tuesday I was in Ellsworth for my doctor appointment, Maryann Rice drove me to and from. I had to take off a few days this week driving bus. I did get some knitting done while I was laid up.
The weather man says we will be getting some snow , we won’t know till it is over what we actually get. Hopefully it won’t be much.
Doesn’t seem possible that Thanksgiving is upon us and then hunting season will be over for another year.

November 25, 2018

On November 8 Carroll and I enjoyed a meal at Good and Plenty on our way back from Ellsworth getting some errands done. On our way out we ran into the Jonesport Historical Society board members having a year end board meeting I quickly took a picture of the ones that had arrived for the gathering on our way out. It was good seeing all of them.
On November 15th, the Pleasant River Historical Society met at the Columbia Falls Library at 6:30 pm to discuss the upcoming buoy poster, as well as the Epping Base Line project that is on going. Those that attended were: Grace Falzarano, Ronie Strout, Cathy Fonda, Chuck Hammond and Philip Worcester.
Our first snow day was on Friday November 16, all schools in the area were canceled. The plows were out most of the day tending to the roads. I hope this doesn’t mean we will have lots of snow this year.
On Thanksgiving Day Carroll and I enjoyed the Thanksgiving meal served at Bluebird Restaurant in Machias. We then had our Thanksgiving gathering on Saturday the 24 with Michelle and David McLaughlin, and Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout all from Harrington.
On Friday the 23 I attended the craft fair in Steuben at the school and the library, I was able to pick up a few things on my shopping list and got a couple of things that I thought I needed. Afterward I stopped by the store Back to the Good Old Days in Cherryfield and found a couple of items.
On my way home I visited with my sister-in-law Bunnie Plummer and all her family for a bit. It was a good day to be out and about.
On Saturday the 24, I attended the Craft Fair at the Congreagational Church in Cherryfeld and found a couple of things for the house. On my way home I visited with Huddy Peterson of Harrington.
In the evening after our Thanksgiving meal at home I took in the Social Event at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls. I was a wee late to see Santa but after participating in the Chinese Auction just in time, I won two pounds of Dunkin Donuts coffee and a gift certificate at Hannafords in Columbia. There were lots of folks out for the tree lighting and social gathering.
The folks that got their deer on the last day of season were lucky, I just wish we had a doe season here on the Ridge. I have deer coming right up to my windows and getting into my bird feeders. I have had to bring the feeders in at night now. We have had lots of birds eating from them and unless the deer start having wings I will try to keep them away from mine by removing them everynight. We do enjoy watching the birds and seeing the different kinds that come to them. We usually know when a storm is coming as all the birds come to feed up.
Update on the Buoy Poster, we are critiquing it and in hopes to get it to the printer this coming week. It looks great and I hope all the fishermen will like it too.
Condolences go out to Ann Norton of Columbia and Donald Woodward of Jonespot on their passing, our commuaties will surely miss them.

attended which made twenty-two in attendance for the meeting and Tea.
Of course on my way home I had to make three other stops where I picked up some items that I needed to finish making my gifts for the students on my bus. Hopefully I have everything I need now. One of my stops was checking in on my brother Philip in Columbia Falls and catching up on some news before calling it a day.
I have been working on my Christmas cards list and hopefully I will get them all done this coming week. I usually am late getting them out in years past. I do love getting Christmas cards, they keep us in touch with family and friends that we don’t hear from all year.
The Changing Tides, 57 East Main St, Harrington, Me 04643 are asking for folks to send Christmas Cards to share with the residents there. Also a special lady in Harrington Dixie Cirone would love to get some. Make sure you put the town you are from on your cards. Her address is Dixie Cirone, 1159 Main Street, Harrington, Me 04643.
If you know of folks in other Nursing homes or the Veterans home in Machias, drop a card to them. I know they will appreciated hearing from you.
