Out and About
The first week of the New Year
has come and gone already. We didn’t make any New Year resolutions
that we had to break. I guess we will just keep plugging along and do
what we can do.
I haven’t yet got all my
Santa Clauses packed away. I do so enjoy them a bit longer than just
in December. My little Christmas tree I finally dismantled and packed
away the ornaments that I had on it. I then repurposed my tree by
placing it on the bird water bath thingy that I have and puts lots of
bird food on its branches for all of the birds that are coming to my
feeders.
I just hope the turkeys don’t
come around and mess it up.
The students on my bus were
happy to get back in school so they can socialize with all of their
friends.
One evening after my EDGE run,
I had to travel to Beals to pick up the basketball team from Addison
and return them to the school. The weather changed and made the roads
a bit slippery, I was glad when I finally got to my driveway and
parked the bus for the evening.
On Saturday the 7, I attended
the DAR meeting in Machias, held at Valdine Atwood’s home. Eight
members were present and we tended to the reports for the past year
that needed to be done. We also had Perin Gray there to discuss with
us on what we wanted to do with the landscape design at the Burnham
Tavern. She will draw up a plan and present it to us at a later date.
While I was in town I stopped
off to see what the Dollar Store offered and the Main Street Discount
Store.
Later in the evening I attended
the Snowmobile Club supper in Cherryfield for their public supper. It
is always nice to get out and visit with the folks that attend them.
I enjoyed socializing with the Bass Harbor crew that comes. The food
is always delicious with marafax beans, chop suey, and casseroles on
the menu. For dessert you have the choice of chocolate cream pie,
coconut cream pie or bread puddings which are all delicious.
Birthdays being celebrated in
the coming days are: Thomas Worcester on January 12, John Worcester
and Arlo Worcester on the 14, Sherry Paul on the 16, Tiffany Strout &
Ed Gosnell on the 18, and Carole Perry Hart on the 19.
Get well and thinking of her
wishes to my niece Regina Jordan who is struggling with her battle of
cancer. I know there are a lot more in the neighborhoods that are
also going through this.
Get well wishes also goes out
to Michael Haire of Columbia, who has been in the hospital again and
is now home and Danny Davis of Beals Island.
I know there are a lot more
folks that could use prayers in the area, so if you know of anyone
that is sick or in the hospital try and send them a card.

Out and About
On Sunday January 8, Jeannette
Perry, Cathy Fonda and Ronie Strout met at the home of Mary and Tim
Thompson in Addison to plan the programs for the coming season for
the Pleasant River Historical Society.
Last weekend many folks were
out ice fishing on Schoodic Lake. I was told that it had ten inches
of ice on the lake. A few fish was caught during the day.
The bus drivers had a safety
meeting on Monday January 9 held at the superintendent office in
Harrington with Dennis Perry and Jonathan Rolfe as guest speakers
from Machias. They gave us information on radio voice procedure, what
to say and how to say it. They also checked out our radios and
recommended that we update them so that they can monitor our
frequency in case of an emergency.
Congratulations to Caitlin Paul
daughter of Sterling and Jen Paul of Pittston, Maine and
granddaughter of Sherri and Dick Paul of Addison who performed the
National Anthem on Tuesday, January 10 at the One Hundred and
Twenty-Eighth Maine Legislature, first regular session at the State
Capital, Augusta, Maine.
I actually heard her sing the
National Anthem as her mother posted it on Facebook for friends and
family to see. Quite an honor I would say.
Girl Scouts were out and about
selling their cookies this past week. I placed my order to help one
of the girls that is earning money for a Washington D.C. trip this
coming summer.
On Saturday January 14, I drove
the NHS girls basketball team to Calais for their game with the
Calais girls. I do so enjoy driving the ball teams to their games.
On Sunday I attended the
afternoon meal at the EDGE center in Cherryfield. It was great
sitting at the table with others that go there. Just getting out
socializing with these folks can cheer you up and you can find out
what they have been doing this winter.
On my way home from the meal I
stopped off and had a nice visit with Huddy Peterson of Harrington
and checked out all of her news of the area.
Scovils Restaurant in
Harrington is closed for the winter. They will reopen on May 12,
2017.
Birthdays being celebrated in
the coming days are: Matthew and Mark Hurlbert on Jan. 23, Emily
Grant on Jan 24. Amanda ‘Davis’ Aube on Jan. 25, Shawn Hartford
and Lisa Cirone on Jan. 26.

Out and About
Update on some news, people are being hacked on their computers
because they get a flashing message saying something is wrong and to
call this number immediately. Don’t do it the hackers will get into
your computer and take information off of it. If you feel something
is wrong take it to a computer expert to get the stuff removed. Also
change your passwords to give more protection and unplug your
computer immediately
I enjoyed going to Ellsworth on Monday the 16th, I had an
eye appointment first thing in the morning, than I browsed some
stores before I headed home. On my way home I stopped in for a quick
visit with Lillian Lounder of Hancock. I just wish I had more time to
visit with other folks along my travels. Usually I am on a mission to
get there from here or in a big yellow bus and can’t stop. It is
good to have some alone time to recharge my batteries.
I traveled to Eastport with the Narraguagus girl team on Wednesday
evening. The weather and roads were fine and I so do enjoy taking the
team to their games. I also enjoyed chatting with the two older men
that sat behind me from the local area.
We had a two hour delay for school on Thursday even though my roads
were fine here in Addison as the sanders were out early in the
morning sanding. Better safe than sorry with our precious children
and bus drivers.
Saturday January 21found me at the Washington County Historical
Genealogical Society meeting in Machias where twenty six folks came
out to hear Nate Beal speak on the Halifax Schooner as altered for
service in the British Royal Navy 1768-1775 for coastal patrol in
North America in the years just prior to the American Revolution. An
interesting talk with visual aids and if you really want to hear him,
he will be given it again at the Jonesport Historical Society at one
of their meetings.
The Narraguagus Snowmobile public supper was again delicious, another
night out socializing with all that came to it. Public suppers are
great place to go to break up the long winter days and get a chance
to get caught up on what is happening in the lives of other folks.
Some come from Wesley, Bass Harbor and surrounding areas for the good
food. Afterwards I stopped by and visited with Bunny and Steve
Plummer of Cherryfield before heading home.
The Table of Plenty had a good group out for dinner. I enjoyed
chatting with Dale and Janice Crosby, Linda Tucker and Sharon Locke
at my table.
On my way home I stopped by to cheer up Huddy Peterson for a bit. We
can always have a good laugh before I leave.
Michelle McLaughlin was in Portland one day recently, her cousin
Regina Jordan rode along with her. They had an enjoyable day
together.
Konner and Tiffany Strout traveled to Boston to see the Boston
Celtics play the Portland Trail Blazers ballgame on Friday. Konner
enjoyed riding the train to and from.
I had some relatives and friends that attended the historical Woman’s
March held on Saturday January 21 in Boston.
Ellen
and Ed Bearse of Harrington could use some get well wishes. Ellen is
home from the hospital but will be having a lot of medical
appointments in the coming months. Keep them in your prayers.

Out and About
I
have been working on some knitting that I found that needed to be
finished. I decided it was time to do it now. I am planning on taking
a knitting class at the Narraguagus Adult Education class this
semester. Thought that it would give me a night out and that I just
might get some more knitting done at the same time.
The
weather on January 24 caused a cancellation of schools in our area, I
had to even cancel an appointment for Carroll as it was just too
slippery to get him out. It was a good day to get some cooking done
that I wanted to do. My slice pumpkin pie was delicious as well as
the mincemeat squares that I made. I had everything cleaned up and
taken care of by the time my husband got up.
I
have been posting photos that I took of the 1789 Smith Cemetery on
Unionville Road in Steuben on line. It has a lot of my Smith
relatives in there. I heard from a young lady that she had some
information to show me on Job and Diadama Smith that I am looking
forward in seeing as soon as the weather is a bit warmer to get out
and look for it. I also just read recently about where Job and
Diadama house was in Unionville.
I
have posted on line that I know there was a Smith Family Bible in the
Steuben area that I was hoping someone may still have tucked away in
their attic. I would love to see it and at least take photos of it
and the information inside. I am just hoping that it has not been
just thrown away and that someone may still have it. If anyone knows
of it please get in touch with me. Oh if anyone has photos of their
ancestors hanging around I am interesting in them as well. I am not
picky on who they are just want to save them for future generations.
I
also have been trying to get some reading done and of course the book
I am reading is one of the New York Times Bestseller, Diana Gabaldon
the author of the Outlander Series. I just can’t put it down for
long.
Condolences
go out to the following families on their recent loss of their love
ones: Millard Emerson of Addison, Norma Faulkingham of Jonesport,
Verlan Lenfestey of Beals and Richard Young, Mary Farnsworth and
Flora Dow of Cherryfield.
The Table of Plenty had a nice meal put on by Dorr Lobster of
Milbridge, Maine. The menu consisted of Fish Chowder, pasta salads,
and dessert. Everything was delicious.
Daniel Davis of Beals could use some get well wishes; he has been in
and out of the hospital. Hopefully the next operation will go
smoothly for him. Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Birthdays coming up are: Bruce Worcester, Jacob McLaughlin, Mary Ann
O’Brien and Mary Snowdeal, on Feb 1, Ruby Mitchell, Charles Lovejoy
on Feb. 2, Susan Norton, Flo Mayne, and Autumn Schrader on Feb 3,
Nona Cirone, Erma Willey and Calista (Sally) Morrill on Feb 5, Dick
Paul, Jean Christian Richardson and Susan Niles on Feb 6, Ronie
Strout, Wayne Trunk, Jack Gray, Virginia Tibbetts, Doris Joy and
Roger Libby on Feb. 8.

Out and About
We got another snow storm that gave us an early release school day on Wednesday February 1, 2017 that dropped only four inches on the Ridge Rd. Other places got more so I heard.
On Saturday Carroll and I traveled to Ellsworth to do some errands. We enjoyed the day out. We are hoping the weather will stay good as Carroll has some appointments coming up in the next couple of weeks that he needs to go to.
We enjoyed face time on the phone with the grandchildren Saturday evening. It makes the regular phone call a bit more interesting when you can see the kids and talk with them as if they are in the same room with you.
The Narraguagus supper in Cherryfield was again another great meal that the snowmobile folks put on Saturday evening. The next one will be on the 18th of February.
Our winter is flying right by, at least we haven’t had a lot of snow to tend to. Spring is just around the corner for us now.
I have been trying to get caught up on a couple of my books that need to be finished and to finish that scarf that I am knitting on. I also have some genealogy that needs to be found for several folks in my spare time this month.
The new Dollar General store in Harrington is now open for business, their grand opening was on Saturday and I noticed there were a lot out to check it out as I drove on by.
On Sunday February 5, 2017 Erma Willey of Cherryfield and Helen Strout of Milbridge celebrated their 90th birthdays with friends and family. I was able to get to Erma’s at Narraguagus High School before going to Cherryfield for a quick visit with my sister in law Bunnie Plummer. She was on her way to her daughters Sarah-Ann Hammond in Harrington for a birthday gathering that they were having for her other daughter Susan Norton.
St Michael Church of Cherryfield, served the meal at the Table of Plenty Sunday with another great meal. We were told that they do the meal every year on Super Bowl Sunday. I attended but only to socialize with the folks that come there as I had already eating at the birthday celebration in Harrington.

While Carroll was in his appointment I got a couple of errands done while I was waiting for him. Thank goodness the storm did not hit us during the day while we were out and about.

On Saturday I drove the JV girls’ team to Mountain View Elementary School and to Sumner High School for a basketball tournament and Clara Freeman drove the JV boys’ team for their tournament. It was a long day for all of teams. Teams came from Orono, Calais, MDI, Ellsworth, Sumner, Narraguagus and Machias to play in this 2nd Annual JV Tournament.
Adult Education Courses have started this past week. I decided I ought to take one and have a night out with the girls and I just might make something in the knitting class. Our first class was canceled due to the storm that we had on Tuesday.

Out
and About
Thank goodness the blizzard of 2017 is over for now. It sure did
mess up a lot of things, schools and businesses closing all over the
state for the day. Of course I think I was a bit disappointed with
this one. I remember some others that dropped more snow and we were
buried in snow for a week or so when I was growing up. I took a ride
up around where I grew up and thought wow this is all that they got
for snow out of this storm. But then again I think the storms that I
remember went on and on for a week of dropping snow and we didn’t
have the kinds of plows doing our roads back then.
I remember of one winter snow storm where the snowplow man got stuck
just below our home in a big drift that was just too much for his
truck. Mr. Dyer had to crawl on his hands and knees to get to our
house. If I remember correctly he was stuck with us for a week and we
were without power too. He kept thanking my mother because of the
delicious meals she served while he was with us. That storm was
probably one of the worst that I can remember growing up as a
youngster.
Little Autumn Schrader of Addison had her tonsils out on February 16
and is now home and doing well. She will have February school
vacation to get over it before she returns to school.
The tournaments in Bangor will have everyone traveling there for
their favorite team this coming week. Don’t forget to turn the
lights out as you leave town.
I believe this is the first time our newspaper did not get to us this
week. In all of the years I have gotten my newspapers not one day was
it canceled due to a snow storm. We were promised that we would still
receive the missing days but alas we did not. How can they not
deliver the papers we missed? We all had withdrawal from not reading
the daily news. I suppose it would be the same thing if our internet
went down and we couldn’t get on our computers.
We have had plenty of birds feeding at our bird feeders along with a
little deer that has been searching for food. My husband has seen the
deer several times. I have put out some bread and salad greens for
it. The deer may not make it through the winter with all of this
snow. Of course I know what will happen, it will stay around and eat
my garden if I have one this coming summer.

Out and About
This past week of school vacation was a busy time for me as I traveled to Boston to visit with my grandchildren Asa and Mabel.
I did lots of activities with the grandchildren, we all went to the Brattle Theater in Harvard Square to see “Looney Toons”, visited the Tea Shop, Hat Shop and Comic Book store, went swimming at the YMCA in Dorchester, visited the Children’s Museum, visited Stone Zoo and some play time at Ronan Park.
One evening I went to the Proper Bostonian Quilt Guild with my daughter for the annual charity quilt making night. What a set up, they had 8 sewing machines for piecing, station for layout and design, ironing station, cutting station, a basting station, and a hand binding station for finishing. At the end of the night they had 31 quilts layered to take home for quilting and there was another dozen tops in the process. Check them out at www.properbostonianquilters.org the ‘show and tell’ page shows quilts the guild members have been making.
The weather in Boston has been excellent, every day we had sunshine and the temperature in the high 50’s and 60’s. One day it even got to be 76 degrees. I could not ask for a better week to go for a visit. It seemed like spring had sprung, and all of their snow melted during the week I was there.
Condolences go out to the family of Vernon Scott. Vernon was one of my NHS classmates and he will be greatly missed.
Vacation is now over and I will be back to my normal routine.

OUT
AND ABOUT
Cold weather returned this past week, after the nice weather we
had the week before it seems a lot colder to me now. As long as the
wood box is kept filled we ought to stay warm with this kind of
weather. The days are getting longer and the sun higher so we should
be feeling a bit warmer when the sun is shining.
The
Annual Town Meetings in the surrounding towns will soon be upon us.
Addison will hold theirs at DW Merritt School on March 14, at 7 pm.
Two public hearings will be held at 6:30 p.m. prior to the Annual

I
have joined the Adult Ed knitting class at Narraguagus in hopes of
learning something new and still have fun. As if I really needed
another hobby to do, and then again when I will have the time to knit
anything. So we will see what comes of this during the next 10 weeks.
I
had a nice visit with Dick Bedard on Saturday while I was out and
about doing some errands. I also remembered at the last minute that I
wanted to attend the Cherryfield Snowmobile Club supper. Many folks
turned out for the meal, the ones at my table told some interesting
stories and probably we were the nosiest ones there. I met three new
folks that came with the Bass Harbor ones. Good food and great
conversations even if we didn’t know each other. Such fun. Can
anyone have two much fun?
The
next and last supper for the Snowmobile Club will be March. 18 at
5:30 p.m.so mark your calendar.
It
won’t be long before the Cherryfield Congregational Church will be
starting up their suppers for the season. Their first one will be

OUT
AND ABOUT
. The
Adult Education classes are moving right along, some of us had to
wait two extra weeks before we started due to storms that we had.
Hopefully we can continue to be on schedule and not have to miss any
more weeks. With the coming winter storm that is expected we will
have it on Monday evening so as not to lose another night.
This
past week I traveled with the Math Team of Narraguagus to Washington
Academy, a lot of students participated with this meet. While I
waited for the team I tried to get caught up on some knitting I was
doing.
On
Thursday Carroll and I traveled to Bangor for two appointments that
we had. It was still a nice day to be out even with the cold wind
blowing.
A
small amount of Eastern Star members got out on Thursday evening for
the first meeting of the year. It was good to catch up with them all
on what they had been up to during the winter months we are closed.
On
Saturday the 11th I attended the Pee-Wee Tournament at
Narraguagus and watched my grandson Konner Strout play and get his
first basket this season. The Harrington Hawks teams played very
well.
Caleb
Paul of Massachusetts was home over the weekend visiting with friends
and family. Always nice to see him.
The
Pleasant River Historical Society met at Tim & Mary Thompson home
for a planning meeting on Sunday afternoon. It is always nice to chat
with everyone and get caught up on what is happening in the area with
them. It was a nice day to be out and about with friends.
I
have made my plans to visit my son and family in Orono, Minnesota
during April vacation. Hopefully the weather will be in our favor and
we will not have any snow to delay us.
I
noticed on my Fitbit that I supposedly got 15 hours of sleep over the
weekend, guess I must of needed it to recharge my batteries for the
coming week.

AND ABOUT
The Addison Town Meeting on
March 14 had twenty two folks turn out for it. It only took six
minutes to open and vote to adjourn to have the meeting on Tuesday
March 21 at 7 p.m. due to the snow storm we were having.
I was in Gouldsboro for a
doctor appointment on Monday and in Harrington on Wednesday to get
some repair work done on my vehicle. There is always something taking
your hard earn money.
On Friday I visited the County
Court House Heritage Center during the day and enjoyed listening to
all of the history the folks from the Trescott Historical Society
spoke about. They had a tour of the Center to see what it has for
information so far.
Valdine Atwood and Celeste
Sherman have been working every Friday to get it ready for the
opening in June. So far they will have three days every week that it
will be open for folks to come and do some research. I know I need a
day or two to actually see what there is there. A list will be made
up and published for people to see what the Center has to offer.
The Narraguagus Snowmobile last
supper for the season was held on March 18 with a full house. As
usual the food was great and the folks that I sat with were regulars
to the supper from Bass Harbor.
The Cherryfield Congregational Church will be starting up their
suppers for the season. Their first one will be Wednesday, May 7, so
mark that on your calendar.
On Sunday guest at our house were Michelle and David McLaughlin and
Tiffany, Zachary and Konner Strout for our St. Patrick Day meal.
The latest news is out, our son Zebadiah and family have moved to
Minnesota and now are proud owners of a home. I will be traveling
there soon for a visit and to meet my new grandson Gavin. Hopefully
the weather will be in our favor.

OUT
AND ABOUT
We
traveled to Ellsworth for another appointment on Monday; it was a
good day to be out and about with the sun shining. On our way home we
went to Columbia to attend their annual town meeting bake bean
supper. Another great meal sponsored by the Columbia Cemetery
Society.
Around
30 something residents turned out for the Columbia Town Meeting held
at the Town Hall on Monday March 20, 2017. Columbia had no surprises;
it took forty-seven minutes to cover forty-one articles with all
articles passing.
Sonny Beal was elected moderator, Kevin Lovejoy was re-elected
selectman for another three-year term, and Mark Wright was reelected
director of MSAD 37 for another three-year term.
At
the end of the meeting, it was noted that Mary Ann Nichols has been
Administrative Assistant for forty-two years for the town.
Ninety-three
voters were at the Addison Town Meeting held on Tuesday March 21,
2017 at the D.W. Merritt School to vote on 39 articles which took two
hours and thirty seven minutes to do.
Chris Chartrand was moderator for the evening; Tom Batson was
reelected selectperson with 51 votes to Tanya Rucosky 11 votes and
Osborn Davis was reelected Road Commissioner with 45 votes to Dennis
Morrissey 31 votes.
Gary Magby was elected Director of SAD #37 with a vote of 44 to Tanya
Rucosky 24 votes. He replaces Angela Alley and will serve a
three-year term.
Article
38 to buy a digital sign for the Town Hall from Taxation was voted
down. All others passed with some discussion with the exception of
Article 5 that failed to pass the Treasurer’s position from Elected
to Appointed and Article 24 was changed to transfer all snowmobile
registration reimbursements from the State to the Narraguagus
Snowmobile Club as the Indian River Tamers Club was shutdown.
Take
notice that the first Cherryfield Congregational Church supper for
the season will be on the second Wednesday of the month, May 10, 2017
at 5:30 p.m. with Comfort Food. The magnets that were given out with
the dates had a typo for the first meal. Pass the word.
On
Saturday I spent a few hours visiting with Huddy Peterson and some
other ladies that were there to see Vicki Roeber. A good time was had
by all with interesting conversation.
Sterling
and Jen Paul and family were here on the Ridge for the weekend.
Sterling and Jen went to The Lucerne Inn to celebrate their 20th
wedding anniversary.
We
have finally eaten all of our supply of marafax beans up. Guess I
will have to order more this coming fall to get in some new ones. We
have been cooking them just about every Saturday evening.
We
got word that my son Matthew has completed the course for Qualified
Member of the Engineering Department (QMED) Fireman/Oiler/Watertender
(TRAINRL-384). We are some proud of him. He stills has a couple
more weeks of classes to go.
We
took a ride on Sunday and was gone for four hours. We rode up and
round Georgetown, Columbia, down the Marshville Rd in Harrington to
the West Side in Addison then from there we rode down to South
Addison, for a look see, back to the Basin Road, and checked out the
Granite Rd, continued across the Basin Road to Rt 187, then to
Jonesport and onto Beals Island for a snack at the Bayview Takeout
that is now open. After leaving Beals we stopped for a visit with
Charlene Gray on the Indian River Stretch and then returned home.
This was a good day for a look see, on our out and about trip. We did
see deer, squirrels and turkeys on our ride.

OUT
AND ABOUT
On
Tuesday I was in Ellsworth for an appointment and afterwards did some
shopping before I returned home. Then on Friday we both were in
Ellsworth for Carroll’s doctor appointment. While I was waiting I
did some errands that needed to be done. We had a nice lunch at China
Hill and an ice cream at Jordan’s before we returned home. It was a
good day to be out and about.
Wednesday
evening thirty four residents, nonresidents and members of the
Columbia Falls Cemetery Society held a meeting at the gym in Columbia
Falls. A lot of discussion was held on how the society was run and
how they wanted to move ahead and gain membership. By laws and
finances were discussed as well as how to get a cleanup crew to start
on getting the Great Hill Cemetery cleaned up this Spring. It was
suggested to meet on Saturday morning April 1 weather permitting to
at least get a start on this.
On Saturday April 1, I was one of eighteen that helped in cleaning up
the Ruggles and the Great Hill Cemetery. Janice Tenan, Joan Moore,
Amy and Shane Emerson, Dawnette Robbins and I tackled the Ruggles
Cemetery before we moved to the Great Hill Cemetery to help the
others out.
The Great Hill had a lot of work done with power saws from Jay Look
and Rick Farnsworth cutting trees and branches that were in the way.
Others that helped to remove the debris were: Chuck, Roberta, Chad
and Rufus Hammond, Ronnie, Lisa and Kelley Hinkle, Pam Look and
Jolene Farnsworth.
Both cemeteries are looking a lot better and before Memorial Day
there will be some more sprucing up to do. All I can say it was great
not to have black flies bothering us on Saturday and all of the
volunteers did a great job working together.
I had a short visit with my brother Philip before I headed to Machias
to attend the Washington County Genealogical & Historical Society
meeting held at the Emergency Management Room in Machias at 1 p.m.
Speaker for the day was Crystal Hitchings on Downeast Regional
Tourism and Bold Coast Scenic Bikeway.
Those in attendance were: John and Marie Dudley of Alexander,
Roberta Hammond of Columbia Falls,, Bill Plaskon of Jonesport, Rose
and Gordon Smith of Eastport, Betsy Fitzgerald and Valdine Atwood of
Machias, Celeste Sherman of Machiasport, John and Carole Ann Sprague
of Marshfield, Kathy Upton of Cherryfield, and Ronie Strout,
Addison.
Later in the day I attended the Balsam Valley Church service in
Columbia Falls/Jonesboro for the little service that fifteen folks
enjoyed and then socialized after with a pot luck meal. Here we met
the newest resident of Columbia Falls Valerie Brinly who has just
moved from Colorado and bought the Dream Catcher house that was a bed
and breakfast.
On Sunday afternoon I traveled to Cherryfield and visited the Back in
the Good Old Days Shop that has been open for the season just four
days. There are lots of great items to be had here. From there I had
a short visit with Bunnie and Steve Plummer before enjoying a meal at
the Table of Plenty and socializing with the folks there.
Get well wishes go out to Steve and Bunnie Plummer of Cherryfield and
Nancy Smith of Columbia. They all have been under the weather with
one thing or another.

and About
This past week I attended two Pee Wee basketball games that my
grandson Konner played in. I love watching these games with all the
little ones learning the game.
Knitting
class is fun to go to even though I am late because of the games
before it. I do so like to socialize probably more than I like
knitting.
On
Saturday my daughter Michelle and I attended my granddaughter Jasmine
St.Pierre baby shower in Hermon. About forty friends and family
attended the shower. She received some very nice things for the
coming baby.
Great
Grandmothers to be to the new baby that attended were: Nancy Hasey,
Helen “Dolly” Hasey, Ronie Strout, and Patricia Randall.
Great great grandmother Helen Kelliher and new grandmothers: Kimberly
St. Pierre and Debbi Hanson.
Tim and Mary Thompson, Jeannette Perry, Cathy Fonda and Ronie Strout
attended the Pleasant River Historical Society business meeting held
at Jeannette’s home on School Street on Sunday afternoon, April 9,
2017. The next meeting will be the third Sunday in May, the 21at in
the afternoon. Where about the meeting will be held will be
forthcoming.
Get well wishes go out to Nancy Smith of Columbia, Joan Ramsay, Terry
Grant and Tim Thompson all from Addison and Steve and Bunnie Plummer
of Cherryfield.
So many of our friends and neighbors are sick and going through some
trying times, keep them all in your prayers.
Sympathy goes out to the family of Ellen Bearse of Harrington, she
was a very nice lady.

Out
and About
April
vacation begins on Friday the 14, the students will have the week off
from school. Some of the students told me they were going to do
something special with their families.
I
will be taking a vacation myself from driving the bus. I think we all
need some sunshine and warm weather to make us feel better.
I
do believe spring is here with geese flying north, seeing robins in
the area and of course hearing the peepers singing in the ponds
nearby.
I
have been out and about my home checking on the flowers and picking
up some of the debris from winter. The wood pile in my driveway is
now gone thanks to my son in taking it home with him one day this
past week. Hopefully the mud season is now over so my driveway will
dry up and I can get rid of the ruts I have made with the bus.
The
Pee Wee basketball season has finally come to an end. I enjoyed
watching my grandson play for Harrington.
Baseball,
softball and Track season has now started for the High School
students. They will be busy in the coming weeks with games and
practices according to the schedule that have come out.
Tuesday
evening only five turned out for the knitting class I am taking, we
have only three more classes after school vacations. I am not sure if
I have improved in knitting but it is fun to get together with the
others.

Out

I had a wonderful vacation this past week, my daughter and I
traveled to Minnesota for a visit with our family there, Zebadiah,
Molly, Oliver and Gavin Strout. They have a home in Orono, Minnesota.
We enjoyed visiting with the family and met my new grandson Gavin for
the first time.
We
joined Molly’s family the Ulku’s on Easter Sunday for a meal with
their whole family.
Monday the 17th we visited the Como Park Zoo &
Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota with the children as it was one
of the days we did not have rain while we were there.
My son Zebadiah drove us around the area that they live in on Casco
Point, Orono, Minnesota to show us what the area looked like.
We had a good visit with the Strout’s while we were there.
Our trip home was almost a nightmare as our plane was canceled when
we landed in DC. No planes were flying north and they had rebooked us
for a midnight return to Bangor for Saturday. We decided to cancel
and catch the train at 3:15 a.m. to Boston arriving at 1:00 p.m on
Friday and catching the bus to Bangor to arrive at 6:30 p.m.
I had already decided to stay in Bangor with friends to visit with
my husband on Saturday where he is in the hospital at Eastern Maine.
We met some lovely folks while we were at the airport and while
waiting for our bus in Boston.
We picked up and traveled with a lovely lady from Southwest Harbor
Gretchen Strong in DC and took her to Ellsworth to catch her ride
home. Another lady Judith of Ellsworth we met while waiting for the
bus in Boston said she would be glad to drive us to the airport to
pick up my car when we got to Bangor. I myself did not arrive home
till Saturday evening after visiting with my husband.
My vacation was now over and I would be returning to almost a
normal routine.
Get well wishes go out to Carroll Strout of Addison.

My
normal routine didn’t turn out normal, my husband has spent the
whole week at Eastern Maine in Bangor, I spent the week staying in
Brewer and traveling to and from the hospital. I did come home on
Wednesday to change out my studded tires and do the afternoon bus run
and then the morning run on Thursday before heading back to Bangor
while Carroll underwent his procedure. Friday evening I again
returned home to get some things ready for his return. Needless to
say, that did not happen, after enjoying a meal with the Masonic
Lodge in Machias later that evening I became ill, and spent the night
at the hospital finding out what was going on with me. Thank goodness
nothing to serious as I spent Sunday sleeping all day. Later I was
able to bath off five pints of dandelions that I had picked and clean
on Saturday morning.
Maybe
the coming week will have me back to my usual routine, here’s
hoping anyway.

Out
and About
Another week of being sick has plagued me but it looks like I just
might be on the mend. Maybe with digging dandelions and having a
couple of messes have helped the immune system. My great Uncle
Charlie Drisko use to say dandelions was a spring tonic to get rid of
all those ailments you get during the winter. Maybe he was right. I
was able to put up twelve pints of them for my winter supply of food,
a good start on my canning.
Back in the day when the children were little I would go out and dig
enough greens to put up fifty quarts, I figured what the heck, free
food for the taking; all I had to do was exert myself. My mother
taught me how to dig them the correct way and how to prepare them.
I found on the internet of the health benefits of dandelions include
relief from liver disorders, diabetes, urinary disorders, acne,
jaundice, cancer and anemia. It also helps in maintaining bone
health, skin care and is a benefit to weight loss programs. So there
you have it, you heard it from me first.
On Sunday Mother’s Day Carroll and I enjoyed lunch at Bayview Take
out on Beals Island. There were others there that were also enjoying
lunch out.
I heard from all of my children and one sent a little song to me that
he made up as a voice message that made me laugh.
The Pleasant River Historical Society has their programs out for the
summer, with the first one on Friday, July 14, at 7 pm at Church on

On Saturday May 13, a few residents from Addison gathered to clean up

picking up trash. They had been out for four hours and had a large
pick up filled with trash that they found on the roads they did.

I noticed while I was out and about
that folks were working outside, mowing their lawns and beginning to
work in their gardens. I myself did get my lawn mowed and raked up
some of the wood chips from my wood pile. It is great that we have
day light after supper so we can work outside in the evening.
The flowering shrubs are beginning to bloom; my azaleas bloomed right
on time for Mother’s Day. I always have one that blooms right after
Mother’s Day so it is nice to have the flowers out. The forsythia
shrub looked great with the yellow blossoms on the dreary days we
had.
Asparagus and rhubarb are ready to be picked; it is always nice to
get fresh vegetables early in the spring from the garden.
The
Jr/High girls and boys team played at Woodland on Wednesday
afternoon. They both loss to Woodland. The weather was very hot with
temperatures in the 90's. We were not use to such a quick change in
the temperature. Thank goodness it started to dropped as we left
Woodland. I sat in the shade of the bus where there was a breeze
during the game.

Friday May 19 I traveled to Boston to attend my grandson Asa Washburn
5th
birthday party on Saturday. Friends and relatives of the family with
their children gathered for the birthday BBQ held at Jesse and Diadem

Washburn for the birthday boy. All the children enjoyed playing with
the birthday boy. A great time was had by all.
Friday
afternoon I surprised Asa at his school where he showed me around and
met his teachers. He was quite pleased that I came. I also walked him
to school on Monday morning before I headed back home.
Sunday
morning I attended Asa’s soccer practice and game and then we
enjoyed lunch out before we bought some plants for their home. The

OUT
AND ABOUT
On
Saturday May 27, I was able to get some lettuce, parsley and cabbage
planted and do up some flower pots. I now plant a spot then put my
wire around it to see if I can keep the deer out of each spot. I
decided to plant little amounts this year of the vegetables. We will
see how that plays out in the coming weeks.
I
had to work inside the home on Sunday to spruce that up for the
coming week.
On
Sunday we had a door yard visit from friends Bonnie and John Clark
from Eddington, they had been down east to put flowers out on graves
and stopped for a quick visit on their way back. I loaded Bonnie up
on rhubarb so she could make a couple of pies. My rhubarb is doing
great this year and I have offered it to a few folks to enjoy.
Carroll
and I took a ride on Sunday to Milbridge to say hello to the
Morrison’s that have returned for the summer, then we drove to
Cherryfield so I could look around in the shop ‘Back to the Good
Old Days.’ There is always something new in the store, and with
three floors to look, you just might find something you think you
must have. There is something for everyone in the store.
Around
fifty or more residents turned out for the Memorial Day program in
Addison.
Carroll
and I attended the Memorial Day program in Cherryfield. We enjoyed
the program and the band with their music. I thought maybe there
were close to hundred that turned out to the program.
I saw an advertisement of the New Escape Room, at the Mill Mall in
Ellsworth has opened. I thought why I would want to go there an
escape when all I had to do was to go to my attic and I could escape
from my everyday life. You see in my attic it will take you back to
by-gone days. You never know what you will find there.
Carroll
had his heart procedure done on Friday after being bumped from his
appointment on Thursday. We thought he was coming home on Saturday
but it turned out to be on Sunday. I did not plan on staying in
Bangor that long. So all is well and he is on the road to mend.
Condolences
to the family of Ronald Chipman of Addison, he will be greatly missed
by his family and friends.

Harrington Elementary School had their Seussical Jr. Musical on
Monday May 30, 2017 and what a surprise that was. Every student in
the school was in it. We are now looking forward to the next year
program to see what they will come up with.
On Wednesday June 7
I traveled to Bangor with the 5th and 6 graders of
Harrington Elementary School for the program at the Charlene Space
Center. It was a good day to have their lunch out on the lawn before
they went into the building.
Thursday evening
June 8, eighteen Eastern Star members of Alcyone #71 attended the
ESTARL potluck supper before their stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. A good
time was had by all.
My garden has now
been all planted and I am looking for it to produce some fresh
vegetables in the coming months. I took a look see in the cellar and
see that I have a lot still put up that I will use this winter. I
always like to have a couple of years ahead just in case I don’t
have a garden and that is why I have planted a small garden this
year.
We definitely
needed the rain this past week as the ground is quite dry. I have
started to water my garden to help it grow.
Michael Hunter of
Portsmouth, NH called me this past week wanting to know about his
ancestors on the Puffer side. He was coming to Maine over the weekend
and said he would give me a call which I did not get. I did email him
information and told him about a distant relative of his to get in
touch with. Hopefully if he is really interested he will get a whole
of Homer Morrison who lives in the State of Washington.
The
Harrington Alumni Association met at the Harrington Elementary School
in Harrington on Saturday evening June 10, 2017 with over sixty
alumni’s and their guest attending. The class of 1947 and 1967 year
alumni’s were honored during this meeting. During the business
meeting, they voted to disband the association as it is harder and
harder to get new people to take over and plan it every year. The
class of 1967 was the last class to attend Harrington High School
during their freshman year and the first to graduate from Narraguagus
High.
A
nice gathering attended Fred Crowley grave side funeral on Saturday
the 10. It was a nice day. His brother Wayne Crowley was able to be
here for it. Caleb Paul was in town over the weekend to attend the
service as well.

of Columbia and Buddy Mills of Jonesport got theirs among all the
others.
On
Tuesday evening the Milbridge Historical Society had their first
monthly meeting with guest speaker Captain Jamie Robertson speaking
on his Robertson Sea Tours Adventures.
On
Wednesday I attended the Cherryfield Congregational Church supper and
enjoyed visiting with the Bass Harbor group that comes to them. Their
next supper will be July 12 with a turkey dinner. Many folks in the
surrounding area attend this excellent meal.
Margaret
Small has returned to her summer home on Rt 9 for the summer, she
plays the piano for the Cherryfield Congregational Church and their
monthly public suppers while she is here. We all have to sing for our
suppers when we go to them.
The
8th graders from the district traveled to Fun Town in
Scarborough, Maine Thursday June 15 for their trip. They also visited
Cabela’s and the Maine Mall before returning home late that night.
A fun time was had by all.
On
Saturday, June 17, 2017 forty five members and guests attended the
Milbridge Alumni Association Reunion. A delicious spaghetti dinner
with strawberry shortcake for dessert was served by the Eastern Star

School is out for
the summer, the last day was on Tuesday June 21, 2017. All of the
students have made plans already for their summer.
SAD #37 District
celebrated the end of the year by having a BBQ for all employees on
Wednesday at noon at the Narraguagus Junior/Senior High School. Lots
of great food was served.
Tuesday evening
fourteen directors attended a board meeting for the Milbridge
Historical Society to discuss upcoming activities. If anyone would
like to donate something towards the yard sale see one of the
members.
I
enjoyed a quick visit with the Morrison’s in Milbridge on Tuesday
evening.
Two twin moose have
been seen on the Basin Road recently. We have been warned to watch
out for them when you’re driving.
By the time this
comes out I will be back from Boston for a visit with my daughter
Diadem and her family. A birthday BBQ will be held to celebrate Miss
Mabel’s third birthday which is actually on July 12 and also to
celebrate her father Jesse whose birthday is on the 14.
Strawberries are
beginning to ripen and the gardens are beginning to grow if only we
can get a little more sunlight to help them grow.
I have been
enjoying my flowers that are blooming around the home front. The
lupines in Harrington are just beautiful.

Out
and About
I have had a busy
week with my grandchildren who arrived late Friday evening June 30 to
spend a couple of weeks with us.
On
Saturday July 1, all of us attended the surprise 40th
birthday party for Gordon Paul next door at his parents’ home here
on the Ridge.
This
past week we have been to Cape Split and Roque Bluffs to keep the
grandchildren busy. On the 4th we all enjoyed spending
time at Schoodic Lake in Columbia at our son’s camp. Those that
attended the gathering was Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout,
Carroll & Ronie Strout, Diadem, Asa and Mabel Washburn and
Michelle and David McLaughlin.. The grandchildren were thrilled to
have a ride on the Jet-Ski with their Aunt Tiffany while there.
We
also had our own small camp fire at home for them to toast their own
marshmallows over the fire. One day we took them to Spring River Lake
in the early afternoon, and another day to the Ellsworth Playground
and to do some school shopping for Asa.
The
grandchildren helped to build their very own secret hiding place in
the woods to play in between helping their Nana put the fire wood in.
They were a big help chucking wood into the shed.
The
children still have a few more days to spend with us before they
return to the big city.
Sixteen
members of the Hannah Weston Chapter DAR met at the Gates House in
Machiasport for their regular meeting with Valdine Atwood as our
speaker, who spoke on Insignia & Protocol where we learned what
the guidelines for wearing the DAR Insignia and some Insignia Do’s
and Don’ts. We received a couple of handouts with the information.
We
welcomed our newest member Kathy Johnson of Machiasport during the
meeting.
Those
that attended were: Ruth Ahrens, Barbara Maloy, Theresa Farnsworth,
Mary Alice Look, Arlene Hutnik, Kathy Johnson, Valdine Atwood, Ronie
Strout, Carole Sprague, Roberta Hammond, Rosa Dykes, Ramona Phinney,
Grace Bernice Klausky, Marlene Hawbaker, Janet Derby, and Janet

Just
in for news, the celebration of life for Millie Emerson will be held
on Saturday, July 22 at his home in Addison, 507 Eastside Rd. at 2
p.m.
I
have had another busy week for me with the grandchildren running in
and out of the house. They sure do love to be out and about in my
yard.
We
went to Bar Harbor on Monday afternoon and had lunch at Epi’s
Restaurant before we all took a walk along the shore. I spoke to Jack
and Doreen Gray on my way out of the restaurant as they also were
enjoying a meal there.
On
our way home we met up with Michelle McLaughlin to have an ice-cream
in Ellsworth. Asa got to go home with his aunt and spend the night
there with her.
Asa
and Mabel have spent a couple of days with their aunt Michelle
playing in the pool some. On Wednesday evening we celebrated Mabel’s
third birthday with the McLaughlin’s with cake and ice cream. A
couple of evenings I have had a camp fire for them to enjoy roasting
marshmallows before bedtime.
Tuesday
evening about thirty folks attended the Milbridge Historical Society
meeting to hear guest speaker Robert Stanley of Milbridge speaking on
the sardine industry. Mr. Stanley showed a film on Sardines in the
early 40’s and then opened the meeting up for discussion along with
Terry Rumery and Gary Ray talking about growing up around the sardine
factories in Milbridge.
Gary
Ray spoke about his family business, L Ray
Packing Co and how it changed throughout the years till it closed in
2000.
We had an interesting talk with the ladies present that packed sardines as I did in my teen years and into the 70's. They were packing before I was old enough to know better.
There are no more factories in our area. There is one in Blacks Harbor, New Brunswick that still packs sardines so we were told.
A lot of changes have taken place in my life for local jobs that young people could do and make money during the summer. Packing sardines in the summer and on school vacations gave me the money to buy my school clothes and all that I needed until the next season came around.
I also raked blueberries in August where I could earn more than packing fish.

On
Wednesday Linda Curtis my cousin from Vermont came for a short visit
to say hi while she was in the area. We enjoyed lunch at Scolville’s
in Harrington while we got caught up on what was happening in our
lives.
We
enjoyed a camp fire with the children on Thursday evening as this was
their last evening with us before they returned to Boston on early
Friday morning. We will miss these rug rats.
Carroll
and I traveled to Ellsworth for my appointment on Friday, lunch at
China Hill, than an ice cream at Tracy’s Take Out on our way home.
In
the evening I attended the Pleasant River Historical Society meeting
at the Church Hill community building here in Addison. About forty
folks turned out for the presentation to hear our guest speaker Chris
Sockalexis, the Tribal Historian of the Penobscot Nation speaking on
very early people who were here over 13,000 years ago up to the
present. A slide show was shown of the early tools that were made and
used in the beginning and where some have been found.
Mr
Sockalexis brought some artifacts for us to look at after the
presentation.
Another
meeting that I attended was the Washington County Historical &
Genealogical Society on Saturday afternoon held in the Emergency
Management Room in Machias. Jim Sherman of Machiasport was our guest
speaker who along with a power-point slideshow spoke about Lumbering,
River Driving and Railroading on Maine’s Machias River.
Sunday
brought another interesting day for us as we attended the lobster
feed that Steuben Library held and I toured the museum afterwards.
The Historical Society has been revised and hopefully they will get
some more information out to the public what they will be doing.
Afterwards we took a ride to Unionville where I hunted for some
genealogy stuff in the woods. I guess everything I took with me still
did not clean off the boulders with the moss that is growing on it.
I will have to return another day to do more cleaning and to see what
I can do. I did uncover some names and will have to do some research
on them to see how they fit into the genealogy that I have.

27. I am definitely will apply as there are so many deer here on the
“Ridge” that get into my garden even with the fencing I have up.
The deer get under and tear down my fencing to get at my garden. My
garden looks like a junk heap with all the things I have to use to
try and keep them out. Takes me a day to get to my vegetables what’s
left of them to tend to them.
Jonesport Historical Society has a lot going on
with them; it is hard to keep up with all of their upcoming events
this summer. I will try to get to a few if something else doesn’t
get me first. I sure do love to attend a lot of the meetings in the
different societies just because of the history of the area interest
me. I just wish more local folks would come to some and support our
local Societies.
Pleasant
River Historical Society really needs our help to continue our
Society; we are looking for new and younger folks to help us out. If
you know of anyone, young or old that would be interested in taking
one of the offices, sharing history of our area and contributing to
our meetings please contact me at 483-4374 we are in dire need of
your expertise.

Out and About
On July 23, 2017
Carroll and I took a ride out and about the area. I wanted to check
out a couple of grave stones and see if I could get them cleaned up
with the D 2 liquid that I got in the mail. I was able to do nine
stones in the Columbia Cemetery before lunch. One stone I had a lot
of moss on it, but was able to get it off quite easy with this stuff.
Hopefully I will be able to do a few more before August is gone by.
After the cleaning
job we ended up on Beals Island and chatted with some folks from New
York that happened to find Bayview Take-Out for their lunch. They
were enjoying the fine weather they have had in traveling around the
Downeast area. They were headed to Deer Isle on their next jaunt from
Beals.
Thursday evening
July 27, I attended the Jonesport Historical Society meeting to hear
Morrill Worcester speak on his dream of having the largest flagpole
built. Morrill had a model built to show what it will look like when
it is all done. He says that he is in hopes to get started in the
near future. The flag pole will have three elevators for folks to get
to the top where you will be able to see Mount Katahdin, Cadillac
Mountain, Atlantic Ocean and Campobello Island. If you have the
chance to stop in at the Museum in Columbia Falls you can see the
model.
Carroll and I
headed for Milbridge Saturday morning July 29th to see
all of the festivities that were happening. The parade was great with
all the floats and the petting zoo went over really well with all of
the different animals for the children to feed and pet.
A
lot of vendors were there this year and I actually got a couple of
things for Christmas gifts. The food vendors offered a variety of
delicious items, from crabmeat rolls, sausages, dough boys, hotdogs,
and even blueberry pies for sale.
Many
folks enjoyed the delicious lobster feast that the Milbridge Fire
Department had again this year that included, steamed clams and corn.
We enjoyed visiting with folks at our table. Of course we are quite
sociable when it comes right down to it. All in all it looked like
everyone had a great time on Saturday.
I
enjoyed having the Milbridge Museum open in the afternoon on
Saturday. I had fifteen folks that came in to see the Sardine
Industry Display and to buy some items that we had. A couple from
Prospect, Maine said that it was their first time coming in and was
glad to have it opened during the Milbridge Days events. The furthest
came from New Jersey and the closest were from Milbridge. The museum
is open on Tuesdays and Saturday and Sundays through August so if you
get the chance stop by and see the display and learn a little bit
more of the history of Milbridge.
Saturday
evening July 29, a very large crowd gathered at the Balsam
Valley Amphitheater to see the performance by the U.S.
Army Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps, The U.S. Army Drill Team and the
Continental Color Guard which was really impressive.
I
also really enjoyed listening to the Six-String Soldiers of the U.S.
Army Field Band that performed prior to the featured act, the
legendary rock band Kansas.

This week I have
been busy painting my deck, I have worked on it for three days
straight. I still have a lot more to do before I can say it is
completely done.
Friday evening
August 4, 2017 about thirty folks gathered to attend the performance
The Wild Goose Chase dance -Measuring Time – a work evolving… at
the Union Hall in Columbia Falls.
The
write up for this presentation is as follows:
Original
concert music and dance: Gregory Biss (Eastport) piano composition
and performance, Susan Douglas Roberts (Columbia Falls) choreography
in collaboration with performers from New York, Wisconsin, Oklahoma,
California, Illinois and Taiwan.
On
Saturday afternoon sixteen members of the Hannah Weston Chapter
attended a meeting of the Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters of the
American Revolution at the Burnham Tavern Museum. The program for the
meeting was a presentation of Native American Baskets by our Regent
Mary Alice Look.
Carroll
and I attended the 80th
birthday party for Vernon French of Columbia and I estimated that
about 80 turned out to help celebrate his special day.
In
the evening 80 folks gathered for the concert at the Church Hill
Community Center. I must say that was excellent and I enjoyed it very
much. The concert at the Church Hill Community Center featured Will
Somes of Columbia Falls on violin and Gary Magby of Addison and
Fredericka King in four hand piano.
The
write up for this concert is as follows:
Will
Somes has studied with Sascha Zaburdaeva and Robert Dan. He has been
the
Concert
Master for the Bangor Youth Orchestra and will begin studies at U of
M Orono this Fall.
Ms
King studied at the Royal Academy London, the Mozarteum Salzburg, the
Boston and New England Conservatories. She is presently on the
faculties of Emerson College and the New England Conservatory
Extension Division.
Mr
Magby studied at the Boston and New England Conservatories and has
until recently been chairman of the Voice Department for the Haute
Ecole de Musique in Lausanne Switzerland. He gives regular Master
classes throughout Europe and South Korea.
As
you can see I have been out and about enjoying myself this weekend
and socializing with some great folks and I keep hearing folks say
that there is nothing to do in Washington County. Sometimes there is
so much going on that I have to choose to what I want to attend.

I
am still working on painting my deck and in hopes to get it finished
in the coming week. This has been a big job to do, but I am gaining
on it when the sun is shining. Of course it might help that I don’t
plan other activities while doing this but most activities are at
night anyway.
On Tuesday evening
August 8, 201 I attended the Milbridge Historical Society meeting
with twenty other local folks to hear the program on: Firearm Basics
– Understanding Firearms & Determining Gun Values. Jolette
Rossi-West and Theresa Ginn of Noel Marine Supplies, Milbridge, Maine
brought in for show and tell rifles, shot guns, pistol and revolvers.
Jolette
told us about visiting a gun store in the beginning of this career
and mentioning to an older lady that she didn’t think she could
ever figure out the difference between a rifle and a shotgun. The
older lady said, “You better learn to like it and figure it out”.
She was right on that, so Jolette began to study fire arm books,
magazines, internet and anything that she could read, now after 15
years she can recognize fire arms when they are brought into her
business.
Jolette
informed us how to tell the main difference between rifles that have
a lot of calibers and shotguns have gauges. Rifles usually have
spiraling rifling and shotgun barrels are mostly smooth. We were told
that there are six different kinds of shotguns, 10, 12, 16, 20, 28
and the 410 gauge which are usually used by children.
Jolette spoke on how to tell the difference of a pistol and a
revolver. Pistols are handguns that use a magazine to hold
ammunition; revolvers are handguns that have a rotating chamber to
hold the ammunition.
Jolette
explained what each pistol, revolver and rifles that she had on
display and the difference in each of them. One local man brought in
several guns that Jolette explained to us how she was able to
determine the worth of them by using her book to look up the make and
model of each gun. She also had on display from another local man who
collects guns as a hobby that we were able to check out after the
program.
Wednesday
evening I and many others enjoyed the roast beef supper that the
Cherryfield Congregational Church put on. The folks at my table were
great to visit with. The church always put on a great meal once a
month. The next one will be on Wednesday September 13 with a chicken
pot pie for the meal.
On
Thursday evening The Order of the Eastern STAR, Alcyone Chapter #71
held their regular meeting in Milbridge with twenty eight members
attending. Another great evening with friends.
Twenty
folks gathered on Friday evening for the Pleasant River Historical
Society program at the Church Hill Community building in Addison with
guest speaker Dr. Ed Jessiman, a retired professor of Sociology at
UMM. Dr. Jessiman spoke on the cultural distinctions between
traditional Native cultures and those of the early Europeans’ and
how both cultures changed on contact. A very informative talk plus
he brought some bead work that he has made to show us.
Saturday
August 12 started out as a rainy day but that was okay with me as I
had an appointment in the morning and then I worked at the Milbridge
Historical Society Museum in Milbridge in the afternoon. The folks
that came were interested in the Sardine Industry that we have on
display and also to find information on a ship that was built in
Milbridge. I was able to help all of them.
The
display will be there till the end of August so now is your chance to
check it out, the Museum is open on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays
from 1-4 p.m.
On
display at the museum are 26 pictures that Helga Theresa Frenner has
painted. There will be an artist reception for her on Thursday August
17 for all to meet the artist all are welcome.

Another
week has gone by and I finally got the deck and back steps completely
done. I am now working on some other items that need to be painted. I
have them primed and ready to paint as soon as the sun comes out this
coming week.
There
were not many that attended the selectmen’s meeting Monday night in
Addison. It was quickly over with the few items that were on the
agenda.
On
Tuesday Debbie Tracy Winters came to visit and we work on genealogy
for the whole afternoon. It was fun day and I hope she learnt
something while she was here.
Just
about every day we traveled to the barrens to watch the harvesters
work their magic on raking the berries. The berries are huge where we
have been. A good crop for some and others say theirs are not worth
picking. We won’t know how the overall crop will be this year till
everything has been tallied.
On
Saturday August 19, 2017, my daughter and I attended the blueberry
festival in Machias in the rain. Not a good crowd out while we were
there. We did find something we could not live without. I actually
got some Christmas shopping done.
Saturday
afternoon about 80 friends and family of Arthur Grant came to
celebrate his 80 birthday which is technically August 27. It was
great to visit with everyone that came and Arthur looked like he was
enjoying himself immensely.
Saturday
evening I was a guest at Steve and Jan Morrison’s in Milbridge
along with Peter Sawyer and June and Harry Rolfe.
Several buses in the district have been spruced up for the first day
of school. I now need to get mine and do some cleaning on it before I
need to use it in the coming week.
We
have a lot of deer in and around our garden and turkeys as well; they
should be quite tasted when hunting season comes. I might just get my
vegetables along with my meat at the same time, here’s hoping I get
a doe permit.

On
Sunday August 20, 2017 I spent most of the day at the Tracy’s
Reunion in Gouldsboro. It was great talking with the folks that
attended. Those that signed the guest book numbered about 40 and we
feel that there were others that forgot to sign in. Hopefully
someone added their names to the list. It was a great day to be out
and about with family and friends.
Debbie
Winters and her daughter presented the Family Tree web site Tracy
Family. They are putting in the information on the Tracy side of the
family tree. They both will be working on it during the coming year.
The site went live on Saturday August 19. If you are a Tracy you can
contact them at this email address: debbietracywinters@gmail.com.
I
spoke on what to use for sources to document their information in
their family trees and to where this can be found.
Most
of the folks that were in attendance were from Industry,
Lincolnville, Winter Harbor, Glenburn, Steuben, Caribou, Milbridge,
Houlton and Bar Harbor, Maine. Further away were: Port Aneles,
Washington, Newaygo, Michigan, Somerset and Fall River in
Massachusetts.
I
was asked how I was related to the Tracy’s, I told them I was not
at all, but soon found out I was related to all of them through the
Smith side of the family – through Job and Diadema Booth Smith of
Steuben. It is definitely a small world.
I
am still doing a lot of outside work that needs to be done before
fall. This is a never ending job.
On
Tuesday and Wednesday I drove my sister-in-law Ruberta Plummer to her
appointments. We had lunch at the new place in Indian River called
Meme’s Café. On Wednesday we ate at Pizza Hut in Ellsworth. We
also had some shopping to do at Walmart before we returned home.
On
Thursday I enjoyed having a relative, 3rd
cousin Pat (Woodbury) Zelley of Massachusetts stop by to get
information for her Mayflower line and DAR line that she is working
on. I actually had a will that states that her great grandmother
Algenaid was the daughter of Moses and Diadem Booth (Smith)
Worcester. Algenaid is a sister to my great grandmother Genetta
(Worcester) Leighton. This line has not to my knowledge been done
through Algenaid. Here’s hoping that everything I gave her will
help her get into these Societies.
On
Friday I traveled to Castine with the Golf Team of NHS, they came in
third place in the meet. It was a lovely day to drive there and while
I waited for the team to finish I enjoyed sitting on the club house
porch in their rocking chairs.
Saturday
evening was spent with friends in Milbridge, Steve & Jan
Morrison, Peter Sawyer and June Rolfe.
It
is getting closer to the start of the school year, workshops for the
district employers are coming up this coming week. I guess summer is
about over for us.

Out
and About
Another
busy week for us, sometimes I wonder if I will ever have a slow week.
Anyway we were out and about on the barrens a few times, I did stop
at the Greenwood Cemetery on the Tibbettstown Road and cleaned a
couple of stones. Two foot stones need more to do on them and my
great great Grandfather James & Hannah (Worcester) Grant stone
needs more especially on the sides and the back. The front needs a
bit more to really get it clean. I just don’t have enough time to
do a whole lot of cleaning with school starting up again. Where has
the summer gone?
On
Monday we took a tour of the Wreaths Across America Museum in
Columbia Falls as Carroll had never been there before. We enjoyed the
tour and had an excellent tour guide.
On
Tuesday I drove my sister-in-law Ruberta Plummer to Lubec for her
dentist appointment. We stopped at the Bluebird Restaurant for a meal
on our way home.
On
Wednesday Carroll and I decided to take a ride as I wanted to go to
Eastport but we never got there as we decided to go to Campobello
Island instead. We drove to Wilson Beech, North Shore, and Head
Harbor and around and about the area. We ate lunch at Family
Fisheries at Wilsons Beach. I stopped and checked out the Campobello
Gift House to see if there was anything I couldn’t live without.
After
leaving the Island we drove around Lubec and I spied the Historical
Society building and saw the ‘OPEN’ sign. I stopped and had a
lovely tour with the President of the Society of the whole building.
I must say I forgot I had left my husband in the car. An hour later I
remembered him and hurriedly went out to the car.
If
you haven’t had the chance you must stop in to the Museum to see
what they have. You will find 200 years of History in the former
Columbian Packing Co. Store from the early 1900’s.
The
museum has an extensive collection of artifacts from the sardine
industry, boat building, farming, military, schools, etc.
At
one time Lubec had 28 factories and was the Sardine Capital of the
World. You will hear the story of the Gold from Sea Water Hoax that
took place in the late 1800’s in Lubec and you can even buy the
book. I even found out that up until 1811 Lubec was part of Eastport
which I didn’t know. So if you are looking up info before 1811 you
must go to Eastport.
The
museum is open from mid-June through Columbus Day Weekend from 10 am
to 3 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Check out the web page
–www.lubechistoricalsociety.com.
On
Thursday all of the employees of SAD #37 attended a workshop in the
morning, the bus drivers met afterwards at the Central Office. School
starts September 5th.
My
route has not changed I should be on Point Street about 6:55 a.m. and
then on the East Side about 7:15 at my turn around which is at 730
East Side. The first couple of weeks will even out to a regular time
once I see who I have for new students.
A
wild fire on Worcester Wreath Tip Lands in Columbia Falls consumed
around 30 or so acres on Thursday August 31, 2017. The concert for
Sunday September 3 was canceled due to the rain that was expected and
the event of the fire.

The
first week of school has come and gone, where does the time go? All
of the kiddos are happy to be back with their friends. Some of our
buses were acting up as if they did not want to get back to work
either but we soon straighten them out.
I
was blessed again with more beans to can this past week and with the
corn that I got when we traveled to Bangor on Labor Day I was able to
put up that too. I don’t think I will go hungry this coming winter
as I will eat out of my larder.
On
Friday evening September 8, around 32 folks attended the Pleasant
River Historical Society meeting at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls.
Our guest speaker was Dr. Donald
Soctomah
gave an informative and interesting talk of the local history of the
Passamaquoddy people.
Mr.
Soctomah is the Tribal historian for the Passamaquoddy people and has
been instrumental in both preservation and promotion of significant
cultural resources of the tribe—language, familial, social, and
artifacts. His historical films have been shown nationwide.
He
also showed us baskets made by the tribal people and brought sweet
grass to smell that a lot of baskets have woven in them.
I
really enjoy hearing about the history of our area and just wish the
younger folks did too. I guess maybe when they get old like “us”
they too will want to know more about where they came from. Wishful
thinking I believe on my part.
Saturday,
I picked up my mums that I had ordered, I love the colors on my newly
painted deck. Later on I had to make a run to Jonesport to get my
cases of can milk for my husband; I usually wait till they are on
sale. It is that time of year to stock up for the winter.
I
enjoyed visiting with the Morrison’s in Milbridge Saturday evening,
along with Peter Sawyer, June and Harry Rolfe. I find we have an
excellent meal with great conversation with them every week.
Looks
like I will be busy the nest two Saturdays with attending the
Genealogy Workshop and the Common Ground Fair.

Out and About
The
Milbridge Historical Society speaker for Tuesday evening was Doug
Kell speaking on how he came to Milbridge and started his business
Kelco Industries in the old Milbridge High School building. This was
our last program for the 2017 year.
The
chicken pot pie supper at the Congregation Church in Cherryfield on
Wednesday September 13, was delicious with many folks out for it. I
enjoyed sitting at the table with Joe, Anne, Ruth, Jean, Louise, Ben
and his mother. The next and last supper for the season will be
Wednesday October 11 with a turkey dinner.
Chris
and Toby Dorr from Missouri stopped by for a quick visit with us
while they were here for a couple of days. They even got the chance
to visit with Roger Libby of Columbia before they left. Hopefully
they will get back for a longer visit to the area.
We
also had a nice visit with Paul Kirby of Jasper, Georgia and his son
Michael Kirby of Sullivan on Friday the 15th. We traveled
to Beals Island for lunch at Bayview Takeout for ‘wicked good food”
and then we gave them a tour of Beals Island.
Alcyone
Chapter #71 held a stated meeting on Thursday September 14 with 15
members present. The veterans program was given by Madelyn Phinney of
Milbridge followed by refreshments after the program.
On
Saturday I traveled to Northport, Maine for a Genealogical Society
Annual Family History Conference.
I
attended the Colonial and Revolutionary War: New England Military
Records with keynote speaker David Allen Lambert, chief
genealogist at New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston of
Massachusetts. He also gave the keynote address on Holdings of the
New England Historic Genealogical Society relating to Maine.
The
next session the speaker was B. J. Jamieson, reference & special
collections librarian at Belfast, Maine speak on Not at Ancestry?
Now What?
The
third session was on Navigating Digital Newspapers with Dawn
Thistle special collection librarian at the Gardiner Public Library.
The
next Maine Genealogical Society has two special events planned for
2018. On Saturday April 21, 2018 and all day spring workshop on
Writing & Citing Your Family History Research with
featured speaker: Joseph C. Anderson II, FASG at the Augusta Elks
Lodge, Augusta, Maine and the 2018 Annual Fall Conference at Jeff’s
Catering, Brewer, Maine with featured speaker Warren Bitner.
This
was another great day to be out and about with people that share my
interest with genealogy.
On
Sunday morning Carroll and I attended our grandson Konner Strout’s
ball game in Harrington where he was playing.

Out and About
The Adult
Education classes have begun at the High School in Harrington, it may
not be to late to join, call Dawn 483-2746 at the High School to
register. The Genealogy class has started on Monday nights, always
room for more to come. I can help you dig up your ancestors.
The Phys Ed Class
on Tuesday last week enjoyed hiking in Pigeon Hill and Marshville
during their classes.
I was able to get
to the Columbia Cemetery this past week and clean some ancestors’
cemetery stones. The ones that I cleaned were: my great grandparents
Ferdinand Worcester and Emma Tucker, my 2nd great
grandparents, Daniel Worcester and Keziah Smith and my 3rd
great grandparents Ebenezer Smith and Deborah Farnsworth. I said I
wanted to clean my relative’s stones but considering I am related
to most of them it might take a long time to get to all of them. I
think the oldest is a good start especially the marble ones and more
in my direct line. Anyway I seem to come across more and more that I
really want to do and have taken notes on where they are. I just
don’t seem to have enough time in a day to do what I think needs to
be done and it is kind of fun to hunt down these elusive ancestors
and spruce them up at the same time.
On
Friday the 21st I had an appointment in Ellsworth for a
check up on my eyes, and then after the bus run I went to Jonesport
and got to watch my grandson at his cross country meet. The timing
was perfect as I had to return the team back to the schools after the
meet.
Saturday
the 23rd was Common Ground Fair in Unity, Carroll and I
try to get there every year now as our daughter Diadem, her husband
Jesse and children Asa and Mabel are there for the weekend. Diadem
and Jesse volunteer every year and the children love going and
spending time taking in everything. Asa and Mabel wanted me to go to
te Contra Dance tent and dance with them. It was fun and the kids
just love to have their Nana dance with them. A fun time was had by
all.
On
our way home we stopped to get some apples in Ellsworth at the apple
orchard. We were both quite tired after the long day.
We
had some more green and ripe tomatoes, corn, beet greens and shell
beans given to us, for me to put up. I am doing my canning now and as
usual it is always when I am busy with other fall things that need to
be done. I just hope my energy and the weather holds out so I can get
caught up.

Out and About
We have had another
nice week with the weather being unseasonal warm for this time of
year. I guess we best not complain as when the weather changes we
just might get a lot of cold weather and wish we had some of this
The
moose hunt up North has not been doing well; it has been so hot that
the hunters are hunting in t-shirts and shorts. My daughter said
thank goodness for air conditioning in the vehicles to keep them cool
while out riding the roads looking for moose.
Carroll
and I have been working on putting up corn, squash and tomatoes this
week on the home front. That keeps him busy during the day.
This
past week the Phys Ed Class had a nice warm day kayaking and canoeing
during their class on Tuesday. Some of the students accidently got
wet while they were out during their class.
I
had a dentist appointment in Lubec on Wednesday and once the fog
lifted it turned out to be a good day. On my way home I had some
time to do some shopping for items that I needed before my afternoon
bus run.
My
neighbor and I have been catching skunks that are digging up our
lawns. I have caught three so far just this week. They do seem to
like peanut butter quite well. I have not seen the deer lately, but
the turkeys are roaming around as usual and hopefully they are
cleaning up any ticks that might be out and about.
My
neighbor Dick Paul has had quite a few porcupines get in his garden
that ruin his cabbage plants.
On Thursday
evening I attended the Jonesport Historical Society meeting along
with thirty five other folks to hear guest speaker Nate Beal on his
presentation “Tales of the Revolutionary War in Downeast Maine”.
I had heard him before at another meeting in Machias and wanted to
hear him again.
It
is always nice to get to their meetings on the history of Jonesport
and surrounding areas. The next and last meeting for the season will
be on October 26 and it will be on the old school houses of
Jonesport.
On
Friday evening I took Carroll to 44 degree North in Milbridge for his
birthday supper. He turned the ripe old age of 75 on Friday. Tiffany
and Konner Strout joined up to help celebrate his birthday.
On
Saturday, I joined up with a friend Pam Beveridge, of Kenduskeag and
headed to Greenville to take a cruise on the Katahdin ship. We took
the eight hour Mt. Kineo cruise that was offered on October 1, 2017.
We enjoyed the beauty of the area and history of Moosehead Lake. We
went to West Cove and Greenville Junction and then up the entire
length of the lake to Seboomook. We were served a continental
breakfast and a full turkey dinner while on board this 1914
Steamboat. It was a great day to be out and about on the lake.
Congratulations
to all the moose hunters that were able to fill their permits this
past week.

Michelle Moose Hunt September 29, 2017
Congratulations to Michelle McLaughlin and Zachary Strout for filling
her permit up in the Allagash on the Fox Brook Rd in the North Maine
Woods.
With the warm temperature during the week it made it difficult in
seeing any moose but by Friday morning September 29, 2017 the temps
finally came down in the low 30’s. It was about 5:10 pm that they
saw the moose coming out of the woods to where they were. The hunt
was now over.
After spending 80 hours in the truck driving putting on a total of
1492 miles the hunt came to an end with getting the moose that
weighed in at 638 pounds field dress with a rack of thirteen points.
Michelle said that she had an amazing time in the Allagash with
her brother Zachary Strout as he was her sub-permittee. Her stepson
Eric McLaughlin, her brother Zebadiah Strout, who flew in from
Minnesota and her husband David McLaughlin was all able to be there
for the first few days of the hunt.

Out and About
Tomatoes,
tomatoes is what is ripening at my house, I have been putting up more
and more to do as they ripen. Thank goodness to the folks that has
shared their bounty with me. I definitely won’t be going hungry for
a long while.
The weather has
been good for all the school activities that have been happening.
Soccer and volleyball games, and cross country meets have all been
held this week.
Strep throat has
been confirmed in one of our schools, so parents beware if your child
comes down with a sore throat; they should be checked out if they
have the symptoms that were provided by the school nurse. It is
highly contagious.
On
Thursday morning I drove a class to the Ark Shelter in Cherryfield
where they learned how to take care of the animals and helped with
the cleaning of the cages while they were there. Then in the
afternoon the girls’ soccer team traveled to Woodland for their
game.
The
foliage is beginning to look pretty around here. I guess the cooler
weather has helped the leaves to turn. This is a pretty time of the
year with the colors to take a ride.
This
week is the second week of moose hunting for the lucky winners that
got drawn; I wish them the best of luck in getting their moose.
On
Saturday the Harrington had their Oktoberfest, a parade at 11, and
lots of things going on at the Bigelow Park for the children to do.
There were some crafters that were selling their things and the Boy
Scouts were selling popcorn for their troop.
Scovils Restaurant served a free meal at the park to all that
attended. It was delicious and a thank you goes out to them for doing
this.
I
started the day off canning tomatoes again, than saw the parade in
Harrington before heading to pick some pears and apples. I had a very
busy day but it ended by having a lovely meal with friends in
Milbridge.
Get
well wishes goes out to my nephew Kevin Ramsdell who has been under
the weather this past week. Hoping he is on the mend,

Out and About
The
Pleasant River Historical Society held their annual meeting on Sunday
October 8 at the Mayhew Library with seven members present: Mary and
Tim Thompson, Cathy Fonda, Richard Paul, Sheri Thaxter and Grace
Falzarano and Ronie Strout. Officers elected for the ensuring year
are:
Grace
Falzarano President, Ronie Strout Vice President, Shelby Greene
Secretary, Cathy Fonda Treasury. Welcome to the new slate of officers
and we are looking forward to having another great year in 2018.
This
time of year has got to be the busiest time what with trying to get
the outside work done before we get fall rains and cooler weather.
On Monday October 9
Carroll and I traveled to Ellsworth via Bar Harbor. We decided to go
to Bar Harbor to see what was happening, well we did and the traffic
was horrible so we got out of there as quickly as possible by the way
of North East Harbor. We did see some fall foliage colors while on
our ride. We enjoyed having lunch at Riverside Café on Main St in
Ellsworth before we did our shopping.
On Tuesday October
10th all of the professional bus drivers of our district
attended a day long workshop and training with Denny Coughlin,
Creator, Owner and President of the School Bus Driver Training Co. in
Minnesota. Classes we attended were: Adverse Driving Conditions,
Pre-Trip Inspections, Loading and Unloading Students, Harassment and
Bullying, Local Terrorism, Tail Swing and Railroad Crossings. We also
had a few drivers from the Ellsworth area RSU 24 come for some of the
training.
The Cherryfield
Congregational Church had their last supper a complete turkey dinner
and all its fixings on Wednesday the 11th with a full
house. Their next supper will be in the Spring on May 9, 2018.
Friday afternoon I
took the Jr. High Volleyball team to Calais. The girls did a fine job
for their first year playing.
On Saturday I got
to go to all of the craft fairs and yard sales in the area and attend
the DAR Meeting that was held at Roberta Hammond’s home in Columbia
Falls. Fourteen members and one guest welcomed our newest member
Muriel Pottle of Whiting into the Hannah Weston Chapter of the
Daughters of the American Revolution.
Sunday was a very
busy day what with picking up the fences, wood pellets from the
garden and putting them in a neat pile off to one side, digging up my
dahlia bulbs, plus trimming around the shrubs and mowing an old
garden spot to make it neater. Lots more to do on the north side of
the house and then I might be done for the year. We will see.
I
worked inside after the rain started at noon; I cooked the squash
down, all seven of them that my husband peeled for me to put in the
freezer for winter. I lugged all of the stew tomatoes and tomato
soup I made this week to the cellar. I can now find my kitchen again.
The wood stove is ready to be lit when it gets colder but for now the
canning stuff has been taken care of.
I
looked at my calendar and I see that I will have a busy week coming
up with bus evacuations at our local schools.

Out and About
Another nice week
of weather, Carroll mowed the lawn for the last time for the season,
I hope. I have been diligently working outside to get it looking good
before we get bad weather.
Bus evacuations
have been held in the district this past week. The weather has been
great in doing them. We hope in an event of an accident the students
will know what to do.
The Phys. Ed. Class
has had two great days of hiking this past week. The weather has been
great.
On Wednesday
October 18, the drivers of the district met at Dave and Lori Mathews
home in Cherryfield for a barbeque. Here again you could not ask for
better weather.
I really think the
skunks here on the ridge need to start and hibernate for the season.
Between Dick Paul and I we have caught thirteen skunks. Where do they
come from and when will we finally get rid of them?
My quince bush has
produced more quince apples this year. They are really not good to
eat unless you cook them. Even the deer do not like them. Speaking of
deer there are still plenty here on the ridge. They are quite brazen
walking up my driveway knowing we cannot do a thing. On top of that
the turkeys have their walk around as well knowing that we can’t
take them out.
I guess with all of
the game around here we ought not to go hungry, if only we could hunt
them for our use only.
Congratulations go
out to all the youths that got their deer on Saturday October 21st,
I heard many of our local youths got their first deer.
Our son Zebadiah
his wife Molly and their children Oliver and Gavin arrived on Friday
to spend a week with us. The grandsons are adorable and cute of
course. It was Papa’s first time meeting Gavin since he was born.
We are so blessed with having them come for a visit.

Out and About
This past week has
gone really fast, and of course it would when you have your
grandbabies visiting. Our son Zebadiah and his wife Molly along with
their two boys Oliver and Gavin and their dog Silva arrived on Friday
morning October 20 from their home in Orono, Minnesota. They travel
right through without stopping a night to get here.
The boys have grown
since I visited with them last spring. Both Carroll and I have
enjoyed having them here this past week. The house is now quiet again
and we will be getting back to our own routine now that they have
left. It seems strange not to have them playing with all of the toys
spread out on the floor. I am sure it will take a week to get things
picked up and put back to where they will stay till the next
grandbabies come to visit.
While here Zeb and
his family got to visit with his niece Jasmine St. Pierre and meet
his grandniece Paisley.
My granddaughter
Brittany and her friend Gage came to visit us on Wednesday and see
all of the family. We had a lovely visit with them and I hope she
will come back again for a visit.
Last Sunday October
22, we had a complete turkey dinner and all of its fixings with
everyone. Those that were here for the late afternoon meal were:
Michelle McLaughlin, Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout of
Harrington, Zebadiah, Molly, Oliver, Gavin of Orono, Minnesota and of
course Carroll and I. It was great having them here for a family
gathering.
We have heard from
my son Matthew St. Pierre that he has arrived back in the states and
that he hopes to get to Maine within the coming weeks for a visit
before he has to return to the big blue sea.
I heard that Tracey
and Mike Peterson house has arrived so now it won’t be long before
they can move in.
Get well wishes go
out to Carol Coffin of Harrington who has been under the weather this
past week. I know a lot of folks are getting what may be the flu or a
virus that is going around. With the kind of weather we are having,
one wonders why we aren’t all sick. So far I think I have built a
wood fire once in the stove, and since then it has not been cold
enough to build another one. In fact I think that grass just might be
growing again but I refuse to mow the lawn till next spring. I do
have a spot of two to take care of but that will be done this week.
Sunday afternoon
Carroll and I took a ride out and about the area to see what was
going on. We did see two deer on the Valley Road and then I saw two
doe deer in my back garden area.

Out
and About
This
past week I have not been out to much except drive the bus. I did on
the half day of school get to visit with Hulda Peterson in
Harrington; it was a nice visit and we almost got caught up on news
in the area.
Monday
night genealogy class everyone was out due to illness so I got the
chance to visit the knitting class for a bit before returning home.
It probably was a good thing as I was coming down with this cold that
is going around. Both of us here have it, I just wish those kids of
mine on the bus had not given it to me.
For
Halloween day I gave out popcorn, books and notebooks to all of the
students on my bus and then had about twelve kids come to the house
at night. No candy this year.
On
Saturday Carroll and I traveled to Ellsworth to get items at Walmart,
on our way I stopped at the craft fair at the High School and the one
in Cherryfield.
The
Shop-A-Palooza held at the Harrington Elementary School Sunday had
lots of vendors and shoppers were coming and going. So many items to
tempt you it was hard to walk on by their items. Of course I just had
to have a couple of items to give as Christmas presents. There will
be many craft fairs in the coming weekends to hit for ideas for your
own gifts.
Lots
of hunters out early in the mornings looking for their deer, I have
heard many shots in the surrounding area, which tells me they might
have got their deer. I could see that the butcher shop has had a good
showing of deer hanging to be cut up as I drive by there every day.
This
rainy weather has gotten me to build up my wood fire in the kitchen
to take off the dampness. Feels good and the furnace does not run
that much.
The
hiking class has been to Petit Manan and Sprague Falls this past week
hiking and the weather behaved nicely both days. It won’t be long
before they will be moving onto something else to do during their
class once the weather turns colder.
I
enjoyed having dinner with Dale and Janice Crosby of Jonesport, and
the others at my table in Cherryfield Sunday afternoon
Get
well wishes to all of the students on my bus that has this cold that
is making the rounds. Hoping they all will be on the mend in the
coming days.

The
weather has changed again with the colder weather this week, I guess
winter has come. I imagine the cooler weather is better for the
hunters.
Congratulations
to my grandson Konner Strout of Harrington in getting his first bear
on Saturday the 11th.
Maybe next week he will get his deer.
Carroll
and I both were at the doctors on Monday and I found out I had
bronchitis after all and got some medication to get me on my feet
again. I think I am now on the mend.
We
were in Ellsworth on Wednesday for a couple of other appointments and
a quick stop at Walmart before heading home. Thank goodness it was a
half day of school.
Pleasant
River Historical Society met at Grace Falzarano home Friday evening
with nine members present for a business meeting.
I
didn’t get to any craft fairs this past weekend as I was cooking
for a food sale on Saturday and then found that I had a flat tire, so
I could not get to any.
Milbridge
Eastern Star Alcyone Chapter #71 had a great craft fair on Sunday the
12th .
with lots of vendors and folks that turned out to it.
Later
on Sunday afternoon Carroll and I and other family members attended
Adreana Plummer’s birthday in Machias, she turned three years old.
Adreana is the daughter of Danielle and Jonathan Plummer.
Condolences
go out to the families of Rosa (Morris) Dykes, Louise Emerson, and
Gloria Hayward. They will be missed by their families and friends.

Out
and About
The
genealogy class that on Monday night had a very interesting
conversation where you might find some information from, the two
folks that were there enjoyed the unusual information. I never know
how the evening class will go, just depends on who happens to be
there.
The
bus drivers of the district had their recertification CPR Class on
Wednesday evening November 15 at the NHS with Sue Dow. It is always
nice to be updated on any changes that may have come up.
Carroll
and I were in Ellsworth on Wednesday between my bus runs for his
appointments. We both enjoyed having lunch at China Hill before
returning home.
The
school district is still looking for substitute bus drivers, and they
will train you. We have to double up when someone is out due to
illness, appointments and field trips that come up. We make do where
we can and hope it does not inconvenient the parents to much. We do
try to notify folks when it does come up. Be patient with us we will
get your children home in due time.
The
hiking class hiked the Pigeon Hill Preserve on Thursday morning
before the rain storm. They are all done hiking for this season and
will be starting on a new activity.
Carroll
and I have been out heater hunting, all that we saw was one partridge
on our travels and other hunters driving around.
I
am prepared for any weather with my new studded tires I recently got
from D & M Tire in Columbia, they ordered my tires and I had them
on sooner than I expected, I have had excellent work from them. They
seem to be quite busy since they have been open when I have been
there.
I forgot to mention that on November 9th
the Veterans Day Ceremony at Narraguagus Jr./Sr. High School honored
four veterans: Richard Meserve, Barry Ramsdell, Wayne Joyce and Clyde
Merrill for their service
The
program consisted of the Welcome by Ms. Lucile Willey, Principal,
Pledge of Allegiance by Nathan Moores, “The Star Spangled Banner”
by the Narraguagus Band, “ A Tribute to the Armed Services” by
the Narraguagus Singers, “ Freedom Finale” by Narraguagus Band
with a Veteran’s Day Video by Mrs Lisa Emerson.
God
Bless the USA sung by Debbie Kelley, “What is a Veteran’s Wreath”
Video by Wreaths Across America, Give Us Hope by the Narraguagus
Singers, Moment of Silence by Zakary Peterson and Taps and Echo by
Peter Duston and Agustin Lizcano.
A
reception was held afterwards in the cafeteria for the veterans and
their families. All of the 5th
and 6th
graders in the district also attended for the program.
Get
well wishes to Barbara Perry and Linda Mahan who has been under the
weather lately.

Carroll and I took our grandson Konner out to ride the barrens
looking for a deer, we traveled many miles and did not get to see
one, we did see a few birds and other small animals on our travels.
Then later Carroll and I attended the public supper at the
Narraguagus Snowmobile Club. It was a full house for their first
supper and it was nice to chit chat with them all.
I
finally got a day to go and pick some brush to make a Christmas tree
for my grandchildren that I delivered on Friday when we all met up at
China Hill for lunch. We then attended the park in Ellsworth with the
children for them to run off some of their excess energy.
On
Tuesday I took my husband to Eastern Maine Hospital where they kept
him, he is where he needs to be at the moment to get him up and out
and about again.
I
had a nice Thanksgiving Dinner with my daughter, grandchildren and
her husband Jesse’s family in Penobscot.
Diadem
and I visited with her dad at the hospital before our dinner in the
evening. I even stayed over with them all before I returned to my
home. On my way home I stopped at the Steuben Craft Fair where there
were many shoppers coming and going. The craft fair at the library
had lots of items for sale that folks were going to.
A
great many children turned out with their families to enjoy the 2nd

Carroll
is still in the hospital in Eastern Maine and doing better every day,
he may be home soon.
I
finished up the 10 week genealogy coarse on Monday evening the 21st
of November, so now I can get busy with getting things ready for
Christmas.
On
Tuesday I was at the hospital while Carroll had another procedure
done and made sure he was doing okay before I left. On my way home I
had a tooth break off but since I had a dentist appointment on
Wednesday, I found out that I needed to return on Friday to have it
repaired.
The
Narraguagus boys and girls team played Friday evening at U of M at
Machias for Hoops for Health and they both returned on Saturday to
play another game. I always get to see folks that enjoy getting out
to the ballgames and support their teams whenever I drive them.
I
stopped by Saturday morning and did some shopping at the Holiday
Craft Fair at the Rose Gaffney Elementary School in Machias, they
always have a great many crafters to check out and lots of raffles
too.
DAR
members of the Hannah Weston Chapter attended a Christmas Tea at the
Talbot House Inn in East Machias on Saturday afternoon. Maine State
Regent Elizabeth Blake Hotchkiss and her husband William of
Harborside, Maine also attended our meeting and special Christmas
Tea.
On
Saturday I stopped by the Sturdivant Library in East Machias and
visited with June Ashmore the librarian. The library is a quaint
little place and has a fireplace to sit by for a quiet moment of
reading or socializing. Nearby is a little table with chairs for
children to read or look at books. June told me they have books
downstairs for sale at a reasonable price. I sure will try and stop
by another day when they are open.
The
Center St Congregational Church had their Living Nativity that I
enjoyed seeing before I attended the Masonic Lodge Ham Supper
Saturday evening, the men are excellent cooks and I was glad that my
nephew Jonathan Plummer mentioned this to me the day before so I
could attend.
Huddy
Peterson told me that wreathing season is over for another year,
where has the season gone, I am just getting started to decorate for
the holidays. I finally finished my tabletop Christmas tree on
Sunday. I was not sure that I was going to get enough brush out back
but I fell into a windfall that gave me plenty to use. I am in hopes
to get it decorated soon to enjoy in the coming weeks.
This
year for the first time I put blue lights up on my deck, they sure do
look pretty when I plug them in. Now I need to put something on my
front porch to spruce it up for the dreary winter days. I will be
working on that in the coming days.

Out

Another week has flown by, it never cease to amaze me
that when I was a child the days and weeks were very long; now they
just fly right on by.
On
Wednesday December 6, I took the math team to Calais for their meet.
Thank goodness the weather was good. I s
o
do hate driving in a snow storm.
Thursday
evening I was able to go to Cherryfield to see the Christmas Trees at
the VFW Hall. Cheryl Brown puts a lot of work organizing this event
every year.
I attended the Wesley’s Tree
Festival in Machias Saturday morning, there were some nice trees
being raffled off. A lot of folks were coming and going
to it. I hope they had a good turnout for it.
Our
first snow storm for this winter started Saturday afternoon, and the
drive home from the 35th
Senior Citizen Party that the Addison Volunteer Fire Department
Auxiliary put on was horrible.
Not
sure actually how many showed up for the turkey and ham supper but
the meal was delicious. I enjoyed sitting and chatting with Mary and
Tim Thompson at our table, plus got to say hi to my neighbors that
were out too.
The
Auxiliary members gave out calendars and candy to all present.
Several of us were lucky to win a gift certificate in the drawing; I
was one of the lucky ones along with Terry Grant and Mary Thompson,
one other also won but I did not get the name.
Rose
and Dickey Norton were celebrating their 57th
Wedding Anniversary by attending the meal as well as Cecil and Eunice
Rockwell celebrating their 67th
Wedding Anniversary. They both were married on December 9th.
Charlene
Magby 95 and Cecil Rockwell 89 were the two oldest residents there at
the supper.
Sunday
afternoon I attended the Table of Plenty at Cherryfield, I shared a
table with Kevin and Mary Ann Rice. As usual the meal was plenty and
delicious, we also enjoyed the music that was played during our meal.

On
Sunday December 17, 2017, I enjoyed having my son Matthew St. Pierre,
his daughters Jasmine and Brittany and my great granddaughter Paisley
visit with me and stay for lunch. While they were here Zachary,
Tiffany and Konner Strout stopped by for a quick visit with the St.
Pierre’s.
On
Saturday I drove the Narraguagus Knights girls’ team to Calais for
their game. The weather was good in traveling and I was glad that it
was during the day and not at night.
I
finished up my Christmas shopping when I was in Ellsworth Friday for
an appointment and to visit with Carroll. Now to get the items
wrapped and under the tree.
Since
hunting season got over the doe deer have been out and about here on
the Ridge Rd. Every day they can be seen in my yard and the neighbors
while they are making their rounds.
On
Saturday my grandson Konner Strout was one of the many that placed
wreaths on veteran graves at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Harrington.
If
you see my daughter on December 25th
wish her a Happy Birthday, doesn’t seem possible she is that old (I
won’t tell)…..it was just yesterday that I brought her home from
the hospital. The years have flown by too quickly. Her brother
Matthew and she are the same age for less than a month.
Birthday
wishes go out to the following folks that are in my family: Molly

Monday
evening December 18, 2017 the Harrington Elementary School held their
Christmas Concert at the Elementary School. As usual they program was
well done, all of the students did an excellent job.
I
received in the mail this year not only many Christmas cards but a
card that held two photos that have traveled quite a ways before
coming to me. These two photos were of two ladies and on the back of
them had Amy Worcester written. These photos were found by the son of
Susan Ingels who lives in Gladstone, Mo. at an antique show in Mt.
Dora, Florida and was sent to Susan to find out who they were. She in
turn believes they are both from Washington County, Maine as one says
it was taken in Millbridge, Maine.
Maybe
one of them is Amy Worcester daughter of Amos Tucker Worcester and
his wife Lucinda V. Tibbetts. If so she married John Bryant of
Belmont N. H.
I
am wondering if anyone might have a photo of this Amy to compare with
the two that I have. It would be nice to connect the dots of these
two ladies.
I
also received recently a box of genealogy information from Royce
Tibbetts that his brother Ron had worked on for over 20 years on the
Tibbetts/Tabbutt lines. I hope to find the time to check out this
information in the New Year.
This
past week I have connected with a distant cousin through DNA. We were
messaging through the site but I found out that she is on Facebook so
that is great.

Columbia News
Where has the year gone? It
does not seem possible that we will be entering into a New Year. I am
looking forward to health and happiness in the coming months.
Christmas has come and gone;
now the decorations will come down and packed away till next
December. The celebration of the holidays goes to fast and January is
usually a cold month with no holidays to decorate for.
Just recently I have connected
with a distant cousin Tami Finzen Small through DNA. She is from
Akron, Iowa. We were messaging through the site but I found out that
she is on Facebook so that is great that we can see each other.
Carroll came home on Saturday
December 23 on a rainy day and he is now gaining strength every day.
Michelle McLaughlin had fifteen
folks out to help her celebrate her birthday on December 23, a couple
of days early at the Good and Plenty Restaurant in Milbridge. She was
born on Christmas Day a Christmas present to me a number of years
ago. .
We had our usual Christmas Eve
sea food chowder with Michelle & David McLaughlin, and Zachary,
Tiffany and Konner Strout at our home. Gifts were exchanged
after the meal.
On Christmas Day, everyone
again came back to enjoy a Christmas dinner with us in the evening.
Jesse, Diadem, Asa and Mabel
Washburn of Boston were here on the 26th
for the day, the children really enjoyed playing outside in the snow.
They had a great time opening presents for them earlier in the day.
Their time here was short but a lot was packed into their visit with
us. Pictures were taken to document their visit. It won’t be long
before February vacation comes and I will get to visit them in
Boston. I can hardly wait.
On Wednesday December 27, I had
an errand to do in Machias, and on my way home got to stop and visit
with Lita Bagley in Columbia Falls. I so did want to do some visiting
with the older generation this vacation but as usual something else
has to take first place in my plans.
This cold weather looks like
will be staying around, just maybe the Addison River will freeze and
folks will be able to catch smelts. We love smelts here at our house.
Richard and Cheryl Paul had all
of their family home for the holidays, it is always great to see
their grandchildren and how they have grown since last year. The
newest grandbaby for them is Owen, I got to hold him and play with
him for a bit while they were here. His big sister Sophie just adores
him. It won’t be long before Owen will be up and walking and
getting into things when he comes next to visit.
