Out and
About
While I was on my adventure to Boston and New York the first snow
event happened and delayed my return to home.
Carroll came for a home visit on Thursday December 31, so it looks
like he should be home soon. He still has to work a bit harder about
taking the steps into the house and be able to get out as well.
On Saturday January 2, I drove the Narraguagus Knights basketball
team to Sumner where the Knights beat Sumner Tigers in a fast moving
game.
Condolences go out to the family of Robin Grant
of Columbia Falls. He will be missed by his family.
Now for my adventure to New York:
New
York Trip 2015
December
26, 3015
On Saturday
December 26, 2015, my adventure with Diadem Washburn and Tonia
Washburn began by taking the 7:35 a.m.
Acela Express from Boston to NYC where we arrived just after 11a.m.
Our trip had begun.
Using the subway we made our way to our hotel,
The Jane,
to get settled in. where my daughter and I shared a bunk bed room
that reminds you of a ship's cabin, at about 50 sq. ft., they are
astonishingly cozy bordering on tight. There are details everywhere
from tile work to crown molding.
The Jane was finished in 1908, designed by
William A Boring. It was originally built as a hotel for sailors by
the American Seaman's Friend Society Sailors' Home and Institute.
There is a rich history involving survivors of the Titanic, in 1912,
and hosting Hedwig and the Angry Inch to name one rocknroll event.
The next thing on our agenda was lunch at the
Lexington Candy Shop
which is known for their egg creams and
soda counter. After our lunch we headed straight to the Metropolitan
Museum of Art (MET).
We checked out the special exhibits first that
looked interesting so we started our tour.
We saw: Fashion
and Virtue,
Textile Patterns and the Print Revolution, 1520–1620, American
and European Embroidered Samplers,
1600–1900,
The
Luxury of Time: European Clocks and Watches, and American Quilts and
Folk Art, Artistic Furniture of the Gilded Age, George
A. Schastey, Herter Brothers and the William H Vanderbilt House, and
Worsham Rockefeller Dressing room. As we made our way to each special
exhibit we saw much of the other galleries. To name only a few: A 20
foot Blue Spruce and Neapolitan Baroque Crèche with a Nativity scene
at its base. The Annie Laurie Aitken Galleries are three intact
eighteenth century rooms from English homes. These rooms are beyond
description and I encourage you go to the MET’s interactive website
for beautiful photos and all the history. A dining room from
Kirtlington Park in Oxfordshire, a country house elaborately
decorated with Baroque stucco work,
The
tapestry décor of the drawing room from a country estate in
Worcestershire,
a
dining room from Lansdowne House and a London townhouse.
After a long day of travel, art, and learning
it was time to relax so we headed to Greenwich Village for a pizza
and then we returned to our hotel to retire from the long day.
Luckily for us the hotel bar also has a sitting room complete with
stuffed peacocks hanging on the walls, velvet couches, and a warm
fireplace, the perfect way to end a long day.
Sunday
December 27, 2015
Today we needed to hit the ground running so
breakfast was lox bagel sandwiches at The Best of New York Food and
Deli then off to see the Holiday window displays: Time Square,
Charlie Brown at Macy’s, Lord & Taylor, New York Public Library
to see the Lion Sculptures, Bryant Park for the outdoor market place,
Bloomingdale’s, Central Park for a Horse drawn carriage ride,
Bergdorf Goodman, MacKenzie Childs, Tiffany & Co., Harry Winston,
St. Patrick’s
Cathedral,
Winter Wonderland at Saks Fifth Ave, and we ending with the tree at
Rockefeller Center.
Lunch was at Pig’n Whistle Irish Pub and then
we headed back to Greenwich Village for some bagel and cheese
shopping.
Murray’s Cheese Shop has an array of cheeses
and cured meats paired with customer service that would bring anyone
back again and again. Dinner was at a delightful Italian Restaurant
Palma.
Monday
December 28, 2015
Started the day with breakfast at Bubby’s
HighLine, and right next to it was the HighLine which is a public
park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets
on Manhattan’s West Side. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the
Meatpacking District to West 34th Street. This balcony marks the
point at which the High Line was severed in the 1990’s. The view
looks eastward to the Meatpacking District and westward to the
Whitney Museum of American Art.
After this we took the Staten Island Ferry to
and from and saw views of the bay, bridges, Ellis Island, and the
Statue of Liberty.
When we returned from the ferry ride we walked
through Battery Park to Bowling Green to see the Wall Street Bull.
The Bull had such a crowd getting photos around it we could see some
of it, mostly the back end. Then we were off to Chinatown and Little
Italy.
We went first to The
Pickles Guys , at 49 Essex St, where
they have all kinds of pickles in barrels to sell, some that I saw
from the 40 odd barrels were, mango, pineapple, carrot, garlic, green
beans, tomatoes, okra, olives, mushrooms, and so on. They also make
their own horseradish.
Last on our list for the day was a tour at the
Tenement Museum at
103 Orchard St. You do need a tour and they have many to choose from.
Do purchase ahead of time they sell out because it is an amazing
experience. We did the Irish Outsiders tour where we saw how an
immigrant Irish family ‘Moore’s” of 5 lived in a 3 room
apartment on the fourth floor without running water or electricity.
We learned of the political influence of the
Irish and the St. Patrick's Day Parade. One Apartment was restored to
look as it would in the 1860’s and another is preserved in its
decay.
I look forward to my next trip to NYC just to
do a few more tours of the rich history preserved at the Tenement
Museum.
From the museum it was time to rush back to our
hotel to pick up our luggage and make our way to Penn Station for our
Northeast Regional Train back to Boston arriving just after 10pm.
Tuesday
December 29, 2015
I was to catch the Concord Trailways back to
Bangor but I was delayed a day due to snow. It did give me an extra
day to be with the Grandbabies.
On Wednesday I traveled to Bangor and then
caught the West Bus to Columbia where Dick and Sherry Paul picked me
up and returned me to my home.
My adventure had now come to an end for the
year 2015 and I have now returned to my ordinary life living in
Addison, Maine.
Thanks go out to Tonya Washburn for being our
tour guide and showing us the ways to get around in New York and
places we normally would have never found or heard about. Tonya had
so much knowledge of the history of New York. taking me on such a
wonderful adventure. This was a great Christmas Gift to me.
Thanks go out to Diadem in helping me to
remember what we did and co-editor of this account.

News
I
have been gearing up my home as my husband will be coming home after
his year long vacation at the Courtland Rehab Center in Ellsworth. I
have had to change things around to accommodate his disabilities and
adapt some things for him. Hopefully all will go smoothly for us in
the coming weeks.
I
have just about got most of my Christmas decorations taking care of
from the Holidays. I work a month on decorating for this one day
holiday and then it takes twice as long in taking them down.
The
Narraguagus Snowmobile Club on Saturday January 9 had a great turnout
for their first supper of the New Year. It was a great time to be
out and meet up with friends that attend these suppers.
Ben
Harper and Louise Kinney of Bass Harbor are always nice to see and
chat with as well as Jack and Doreen Gray of Ellsworth, Pat &
Cheryl Ward of East Machias, Bun & Brenda Ward of Columbia Falls,
Nancy Willey and Ellen Tenan both of Cherryfield were just a few
that were there.
These
suppers help in keeping away cabin fever during the long winter.
Thank goodness it is not like last winter with all of that snow we
had.
Richard
and Cheryl Paul of Addison have returned from their trip that they
have been on. They had a wonderful time but are glad to be back home.
On
Friday January 8, I drove the Narraguagus Knights to Woodland for
their game against the Dragons. The Dragons beat our team
The
Table of Plenty had a lovely meal on Sunday, the meatloaf was
excellent and I was glad to have the chance to attend and socialize
with the regular folks that are there.
Celebrating
birthdays this month are: Thomas Worcester the 12, John Worcester and
Arlo Worcester the 14, Sherry Paul the 16, Tiffany Strout, Ed
Gosnell, Frances Stanwood and Lorna Greene the 18, Carole Hart the
19, Chris Gosnell the 22, Arleta Grant and Larry Shaw the 23 and

Coming Events
Cherryfield Snowmobile Club will have their
next public supper at the Snowmobile Clubhouse Ridge Road,
Cherryfield, 5:30 p.m. on January 23.
Out and About
I stopped by and visited with Huddy Peterson of
Harrington one evening and also enjoyed having supper with her and
Charlie. We had a great time reminiscing about the good old days.
I
guess winter has arrived with these two storms we got this past week.
One good thing is that Spring will be here within eight weeks.
Daylight saving time is March 13.
There
was a nice turnout for the memorial service for Nancy Prince of
Columbia Falls. She will be missed by all of her friends and family.
Not
many were out for the Table of Plenty Sunday in Cherryfield but a
great place to socialize with folks. After I left there I called on
a cousin to return some genealogy papers I had borrowed from him a
while ago. It took me a bit of time to copy them and make sure I had
got all of the information on them.
On
my way home I visited with my son and family in Harrington.
Condolences
go out to the family of Larry Pineo. His family will greatly miss
him.

Out and About
On Tuesday
I drove the Lady Knights to Washington Academy for their game where
they lost to Washington Academy.
Elementary Schools are still having their
ballgames during the week, some more will be happening this coming
week.
I am so sorry for Shawn Hatt’s family of
Harrington on losing their home to a fire this past weekend while
they were in Portland for their son’s surgery.
I have heard that the police has arrested
someone in the theft of the tools in Steuben.
On Saturday my daughter Diadem and I attended
a baby shower in Holden for her best friend Kate Lachapelle. Great
games, food and lots of her friends, mother in law and grandmother in
law were in attendance for this wonderful occasion. Afterwards we
returned to Kate’s home in Ellsworth for a visit with the family
before Diadem and I ventured out for a meal before we left for our
respective homes in the evening.
I do so hate to shop especially at Walmart
hunting for stuff that we need there. I hunted for the items on my
list for over an hour and did not even get to shop for food which I
guess I did not need anyway.
A busy Sunday for me, took three hours to get
Carroll’s medication sorted out and organized for the week and
month plus housework and getting caught up on chores that needed
done.
Caleb Paul was home over the weekend, for his
yearly fishing trip. I heard others had been out ice fishing as well
and I had two fish brought to me that were caught over the weekend.
Carroll has had two visitors stop by here at
home for a short visit this week. It is always nice to have visitors
come by. Carroll got out of the house on Friday for his first doctor
appointment in Gouldsboro. He has settled in nicely since coming home
from rehab on the 18th.

Photos: Skipper Program students
Wednesday January 27, 2016 I traveled with the Maine Skipper
Students from Jonesport and Narraguagus High School to the State
House in Augusta for a meeting; where they discussed the upcoming
bill LD # 1503known as the Lobster Bill or rather called An Act to
Create a Class II Limited Lobster and Crab Fishing License and
Improve the Limited-entry System. The committee for this bill
will be meeting on February 10, 2016 at the State House.
The Eastern Maine Skippers Program is a program designed for junior
and senior high school students interested in becoming fishermen or
currently already fishing. Once they graduate they will be able to
advocate for the fishing communities as knowledgeable fishermen and
help to regulate and maintain the impact on Maine’s coastal
economy.
The students were introduced to DMR Commissioner Pat Keliher and then
to the people that worked on the bull. The students learned the
legislative process on how a bill was made and what it has to go
through before it becomes a law.
While the students had lunch with the Marine Resources Committee they
also were able to discuss more on the process of making laws and dug
deeper into the student license part of LD 1503. Some of the students
stayed and continued to discuss with the representatives while others
took the tour of the State House before we left for home. Some of
the students were asked to come back on February 10 when the
committee meets to go over the bill to ask their own questions.
On Saturday January 30, I traveled to Sumner with the Junior
Varsity girls and boys of Narraguagus High for the First Annual Scott
Jellison JV Invitational Tournament. While I was waiting all day for
the teams to play I worked on Genealogy as I had brought my computer
with me. I had a very productive day but was tired when I got home.
Congratulations and best wishes go out to Loretta and Royce Foss who
were married on January 28, 1956. The Foss’s celebrated on Saturday
January 30 their 60th wedding anniversary at their home
with over two dozen friends and family that gathered to celebrate
this mile stone with cake and homemade ice cream.
February birthdays Virginia Tibbetts, Doris Joy, Roger Libby, Jack
Gray and Ronie Strout February 8, Betty Jordan the 9, and Tracey
Ramsay and Dave Baldwin the 10, Chub Dowling on Feb 11. are just a
few celebrating.
Special birthday wishes go out to Doris Joy who will turned 101 on
February 8.
Condolences go out to the family of John
Tibbetts of Columbia Falls; the town has lost a long time educator
who came back to his hometown to retire, he will be greatly missed by

Out and About
The adult education classes have now begun at
Narraguagus High School, and I am teaching the genealogy class there
on Monday night. It still is not too late to join us.
Between my bus run on Monday I traveled to
Ellsworth for my eye appointment and then enjoyed my February
birthday meal at Governors Restaurant I figured I best get it on
this day as I did not know if I would be back to Ellsworth during the
month.
On Friday we had a snowstorm that closed our
schools and before it was all said and done we got about twelve
inches here on the Ridge. I was told that South Addison got fourteen
inches where they were closer to the ocean.
The landscape was beautiful when the sun came
out on Saturday with all of the snow on the trees.
On Saturday the boys and girls Junior Varsity
teams of Narraguagus traveled to Dexter for a tournament. This was
the first time I had ever been to Dexter Regional High School and to
the Ridge View Community School. The boy’s team played Orono and
Dexter teams and the girls played Dexter and Central teams. These
were fast moving games; our girls got done at 9 p.m. as they were the
last ones to play which made us quite late in returning home.
I was told that on Sunday
February 7 the Lady Knights basketball team of Narraguagus traveled
to Bangor to deliver a $1000. 00 check to the Ronald McDonald House.
These young ladies raised this money by selling concession at the
boy’s home games.
Sunday afternoon I had the
pleasure to attend a Mary Kay Cosmetic party in Columbia. What fun we
all had trying out the products that the consultant brought with her.
All that attended thought it was too bad we couldn’t go out for
the evening after we got all dolled up but alas we knew that wasn’t
going to happen.
Condolences go out to the families of Larry
Grant of Franklin; of Lucille MacQuariie of Hancock and of Forrest
Caler of Harrington. These folks will be greatly missed by their
families.
Birthday wishes go out to Valerie Worcester on
February 17 and Donald Worcester on the 24.

Out and About
We
have been enjoying having our son Zebadiah, his wife Molly and their
son Oliver Strout here visiting with us. Little Oliver has been
getting to know the family and every day I can see a change in him.
He loves to play peek-a-boo with me, and gives me a big smile every
time.
Both Zebadiah and Molly have
been working on some small needed projects around the home while they
are here. Just a few more days and they will soon be heading back to
Nevada.
Last weekend I visited
Jordan’s Sunny
Side Farm,
maple syrup operation on the West Side Road, Addison and watched the
operation of how maple syrup is made.
On Friday I traveled to
Rockland with the Jonesport and Narraguagus students in the Skipper
Program for the Maine Fishermen’s Forum being held at the Samoset
Resort with the teachers Tony Beal, and Lynn Alley of Jonesport-Beals
and the teachers of Narraguagus Donna Strachan and Kathy Howell.
This event is held every year
and attracts several thousand people from fishing-related businesses,
governmental agencies, individual fishermen and public organizations
that serve the industry.
The first Forum took place in
1976 and since then has revolved into a larger event every year with
over 130 Trade Show Exhibitors for this three day event. There were
even events for children under 14 to do every day.
The exhibitors all had
something to give to you as you stopped by their exhibit from candy,
water bottles, ponchos, pens, tide charts, Skipper’s Logbooks, and
many other items relating to the fishing industry.
There were many seminars going
on during the day that you could participate in and learn what is
going on in the fishing industry.
The Trade Show sponsored
Health Care Screening that included blood pressure, blood glucose &
cholesterol checks and offered tetanus boosters. Also offered was
skin cancer screening by Dr. Mark Jensen during the event.
A Maine native, Gordon Holmes,
author of the East
of the Hague Line,
a fictional story of what it takes to live the life of an offshore
fisherman was there promoting his book.
Eight high schools from
Vinalhaven to Jonesport, Maine attended this Forum with their
students from the Skipper program.
The Skipper Program would like
to see all of the thirteen high schools along the coast of Maine be
involved in this.
The students that were with me
had an enjoyable day learning what is offered from all the exhibitors
and meeting with them. This was a very productive day in learning
about the fishing industry on the coast of Maine.
The first annual Dodge Ball
Tournament was held at Narraguagus High School on Saturday March 5.
The participants had a lot of fun with this event. I overheard
several saying they were hoping to do this again.
Don’t forget that on Sunday
March 13 we need to set our clocks one hour ahead for Day Light
Saving time. Spring will soon be here.

The
Town of
Addison held
their annual meeting Tuesday March 8 at the D.W. Merritt Elementary
School. Chris Chartrand presided over the meeting as Moderator, Tim
Thompson was voted in to serve a three-year term as Selectman, John
Woodward continues as Treasurer for another year, and Osborne Davis
was again voted in with 73 votes to Harold Tyler’s 39 votes to stay
as our Road Commissioner for another year. Of the 39 articles in the
report, one was invalid and two were tabled.. All others were passed
with a couple that was amended before voted on. The meeting adjourned
at 8:50 p.m. after voting on all 39 articles.
Prior to the Town Meeting a
heated discussion on demolishing the present Town Hall/Offices and
replacing it with a modern building took place. Slides were shown on
what needed to be done and the cost if the hall was to be renovated.
Not many attended the public
supper that the Women’s Fire Auxiliary put on prior to the above
meetings. The supper was excellent with all of the great cooks we
have in our town. If you missed it, it was your loss. I enjoyed the
meal and the homemade pies were delicious.
On Thursday the Narraguagus
Lady Knights and Coach Heather Thompson were invited to the
Washington County Sheriff Office in Machias where Sheriff Barry
Curtis gave a tour of his office, the Jail, the Regional
Communication Center and the new Court House addition.
Condolences go out to the
families of David Gray, Larry Look, and Rachael Leighton, their
families and friends will miss them.
Get well wishes go out to Asa
and Mabel Washburn, Nona Cirone and Susan Norton, hoping that they
will all soon be on the mend.
On Sunday at our house we had
a huge corn beef dinner with three of our children: Michelle and
David McLaughlin, Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout and Zebadiah,
Molly and Oliver Strout. It is always great to have the family around
to share a meal with us and to visit for the afternoon.

Out and About
Our
son Zebadiah, his wife Molly and our cute grandson Oliver has
returned to Nevada after spending some time in Maine with us.
Zebadiah and Molly both did some projects for us that we are greatly
appreciative while they were here.
On Friday I scooted to Bangor
to find wallpaper and paint for my living room. Hopefully in the
coming days I will be getting at least the painting done. While I was
out and about a lot of others were out shopping for the same things
that I was. I guess Spring is in the air and everyone wants to spruce
up their homes. It has been about thirty years since I have done any
in my own home, so guess it is about time I got busy and git her
done.
Before returning home I popped
on over to Winterport for a quick visit with my friend Molly and her
husband Dick Woodsum. They will soon be heading to Connecticut for
their annual visit with their daughter.
On Saturday the 19, I got up
real early to start work on the living room, worked all morning
around the bay windows preparing the trim for painting before heading
to Machias for a meeting.
Twenty folks interested in
genealogy attended the Washington County Historical Genealogical
Meeting in Machias in the afternoon. Tanya Rucosky, new member of the
Washington County Archives Committee was our guest speaker today. She
spoke on archiving the items that we may have and need to save for
future generations.
During the meeting we got
updates on all the projects and activities going on with all of the
Historical Societies in Washington County.
A discussion of what is
happening in the Washington County Heritage Center. We discussed the
management, types of donations – records for the genealogical
searches, volunteers and equipment that will be needed and when it
will be open for researches. We have a lot of things to think about
before it is up and running.
Our next meetings will be June
25, September 10, and November 12, 2016 at 28 Center St. Machias, Me.
at 1 pm.
On our way home Cathy Fonda
and I stopped by Leighton Jewelry Store in Machias for a look see. I
got a hug from Brett the owner as he is a nephew of mine. We chatted
a bit before we got on our way. Cathy said she should have known that
I knew him when I went in and got that hug. A nice little shop with
lots of great pieces of jewelry there made especially for that
special person. Check it out when you’re in Machias.
I heard that Rufus and Chuck
Hammond of Columbia Falls spent the afternoon on Thursday having a
fun time in Ellsworth and eating out for a treat.
Get Well & Condolences:
Get well wishes to Ronnie and
Mary Look, Asa, Mabel and Diadem Washburn all have been under the
weather lately.
Condolences go out to the
family of Aaron Tilton of Harrington; Aaron will be missed by many of
his friends and families.

Out and About
Get well wishes to the
following folks: Jennie Ganiel of Harrington is in Courtland Rehab
in Ellsworth, cards would be nice for her to get. Randy Gray of
Brewer needs prayers sent to him while he is in the hospital and
Joanne Gray his wife has also been under the weather. Janice Morris
of Jonesboro needs prayers and get well wishes. Also my
grandchildren, Asa and Mabel could use some get well wishes as well.
They both have been sick but are now on the mend.
There has been a lot of this
flu stuff going around and folks have been quite sick with it, maybe
if we could get some warm weather and actually keep it, everyone will
feel better.
I have been painting and
wallpapering this week. I just had to get the first two walls papered
so I could see how it was going to look. I now need to finish the
painting and preparing the other wall so I can finish the
wallpapering.
On Monday the school district
had another snow date because of the storm that we had that day.
Because of this storm the Columbia Town Meeting was canceled till
Wednesday evening. Only thirty residents stayed for the town meeting,
but many residents and out of towner’s attended the bake bean
supper that was put on by the Epping Volunteer Fire Association. The
meeting was moderated by Sonny Beal and lasted fifty five minutes
with all forty three articles approved.
On Thursday, I drove the 8th
grade students to Augusta to the museum and they also had a tour of
the State House before returning to school.
On Friday evening Order of the
Eastern Star, Alcyone #71 called a special meeting to plan our Annual
Meeting on Thursday March 30 at the lodge in Milbridge. All Eastern
Star members are welcome to attend.
We
had a two hour delay for school on Friday due to the road conditions;
thank goodness we did not lose a whole day of school.
On Saturday evening the
Narraguagus Snowmobile Club, Cherryfield had their last supper for
the season with a full house. It was good to see the folks from Bass
Harbor there and speak with them.
A good amount of folks were
out for Easter Service at the Baptist Church in Harrington on Sunday,
I even got the chance to attend and see everyone.
Guests at my home for Easter
Dinner were Michelle and David McLaughlin, Zachary, Tiffany and
Konner Strout. The other three children we heard from by phone of
email. My son Matthew was somewhere in the middle of the ocean either
coming or going.
It was a miracle that Earlon
Thompson of Columbia Falls is here today after surviving a cold dip
in the ocean this past week. It could have been a disaster for the
family. He was out and about after this event with his wife Sally at
the Columbia Town Meeting supper and the Narraguagus Snowmobile Club
supper this week.

Out and About
A
lot of things are going on in the area as you can see in the upcoming
events list.
Where has the time flown? I
guess when you have been busy it goes by fast. It doesn’t seem
possible that April is here.
On April Fool’s Day, when my
students got on the bus I allowed the little ones to sit up back and
had the upper grades sit down front. Needless to say some of the
older ones thought they had done something wrong. I made some little
ones quite happy that they could go all the way back in the bus to
sit.
This past week I spied with my
little eyes while driving my yellow school bus a penguin in Addison.
Of course I posted on Face book that I saw one. A lot of comments
were made, before I finally took a picture of it to prove there is
one here in Addison. I didn’t say it was real but I heard that
Luther Choate carved it and it is standing on his door steps for all
to see as they drive by. So the next time you happen to be in
Addison, check this out, you never know what you may find and see as
you travel to and fro our little town.
Did you hear about the broom
trick that was all over Facebook one snowy day in March?. It seems
some of us have not seen this done so we up and had our brooms stand
by them-selves and took pictures to show everyone else. Oh what fun
and hilarious it was to see all that did it and the comments made on
Facebook. I saw friends and relatives from all over the United States
post pictures that they had their broom standing by itself. I guess
it was one of those days everyone was on Facebook checking out what
everyone was up to. Fun it was!
The folks that have been
collecting sap to make maple syrup are doing quite well this year. I
see Richard Paul collecting his every day to make maple syrup with.
It won’t be long before that will be over for another year.
Richard Paul of Addison has
been pruning his apple trees in hopes he will get some great apples
in the coming season. Richard also has been busy this winter hauling
trees out to cut up for his wood supply.
I noticed the other day that
the rabbits that are hopping around the Ridge had not turned brown;
they were still sporting their white coats and the deer in the area
are out and about so watch out for them along the roads. I have seen
quite a few deer here on the Ridge Road lately. Especially be careful
on Old Addison Road for the ‘Kids’ (goats) that get out of their
pen. They are cute and so far I have not seen them in the road yet.
Get well wishes go out to
Charlie Peterson of Harrington he has bronchitis, to Randy Gray of
Brewer, Joanne Willey of Cherryfield, Jennie Ganiel of Harrington,
Fred Crowley of Columbia Falls and Nona Cirone of Addison.
It seems as I listen to folks
that a lot of them are getting this flu mess that has been going
around. A lot of the students have missed school because of it. If
the weather would only warm up some would be a great help to us all.
On Sunday it was nice to
attend Church in the morning and then the Table of Plenty in
Cherryfield in the afternoon. Musician’s played and sang while we
ate our meal. I always enjoy chatting with the folks that turn out to
this, especially to Dale and Janice Crosby of Jonesport. This was a
great way to end the weekend in my busy schedule.

Out and About
The schools in the district
had their kindergarten registration this past week. Hopefully all of
the parents got their little kiddos registered for school this fall.
On Thursday afternoon and
evening of April 7, seventeen people took the Maine Driving Dynamics
Defensive Driving Course at Narraguagus High School. All of the bus
drivers in the district took this course taught by Donald Saunders of
Ellsworth. You learn something new every time you have to take this.
A course that everyone should take, and it does help put points on
your license if you need them plus it can lower your automobile
insurance.
On Friday evening April 8,
fifty two Eastern Star Members, Masonic Members and friends attended
the open installation of Jonesport Chapter Rumery #46 at the Masonic
Hall in Addison. Eastern Star members came from all over Maine to
attend the installation.
On Saturday afternoon April 9
over thirty Eastern Star members attended the Machias #83
installation of officers at the Masonic Hall in Machias.
While enjoying the
refreshments after the installation, I found another cousin. It seems
that some people appear when I least expect it. In the course of a
conversation, the gentleman that was sitting next to me was related,
we shared the same Reynolds family, and his aunt was my great aunt.
Small world, now I wonder who else I might happen onto.
On Sunday afternoon the
Pleasant River Historical Society met at Tim and Mary Thompson for a
business meeting with Jeannette Perry, Ronie Strout and Cathy Fonda
in attendance.
I have finally finished
painting and papering my living room. If I must say so it does look
nice, after all I did it. I do so love paper on my walls in this over
100 year old house. My son told me that it would be the last time I
would paper my rooms. Any way I am going to enjoy it. Now onto the
next room to be done this Spring. Thank goodness my walls are
straight and not crooked like some houses that I have papered.
I heard some peepers out the
other day, so it must mean that Spring has sprung finally
I love to hear the birds
singing in the mornings when I go out to get my bus going.
School vacation is coming up
on the 18th,
I am hoping that the weather will be great so when my grandchildren
come the weather will be warm for them to play outside.
The loss of power on Friday
was scary for some folks, I am just glad that we had our breakers
turned off when it came back on and had no problems when I turned it
back on.
It was a miracle that the fire
at the Four Corner was minimized as such; it could have been a total
loss for the store. The good Lord was watching over the Looks.
I hope all of the folks that
are still under the weather are on the mend. I hear there are a few
that have bronchitis and strep throat. I guess because of the lack of
snow this year the illnesses have cropped up and are taking a toll on
all of us.

Out and About
Spring break is here, the
little kiddos are off for a week from learning all of that book work.
Some told me they were going away for a visit with grandparents and
some just for a vacation with their parents. Most of them will have
play dates during the week with their buddies at school. I am sure
they will keep their parents busy with going here and there.
The students had a treat on
Friday the 15th,
with the Darlings Ice Cream Truck during the day and then in the
evening they had Family Movie Night for the students. They watched
Star Wars – The Force Awakens.
We have had several of our bus
drivers out this past week with this mess that everyone has been
having, it caused us to double up on Friday. All of the kids did get
home within a reasonable time.
Our buses are being serviced
over the break, so it is nice not to have that big yellow bus in my
yard for a few days to give me some extra space.
On Thursday evening the Order
of the Eastern Star Milbridge Alcyone Chapter #71 held their regular
stated meeting at the Masonic Lodge in Milbridge. The next meeting
will be April 29 for the Installation of Officers for the ensuring
year.
On Saturday I traveled to
Bangor to get my wallpaper for the dining room. It was a marvelous
day to be out and about and also to get some errands done at the
other stores that I needed to go to. All in all it was a great day to
be out and about.
Sunday Diadem and the
grandbabies came for a visit this coming week, a change for me as I
usually go to Boston during vacation.
Get well wishes go out to David
Madden, a cousin of mine in Ellsworth. Also to Fred Crowley &
Fred Prince both of Columbia Falls, to Randy Gray of Brewer and Huddy
Peterson of Harrington.
On Saturday April 15, my great
great Grandmother Diadem Booth (Smith) Worcester turned 202 years
old. Wish there was a way that you could go back in time to see what
she went through in her life time and talk with her. I posted a
picture of her on Facebook and several folks also had her as an
ancestor.
I hear the snow birds are all
coming back from wintering in Florida. It will be like old home week
when they get here to check out what is happening in our small towns.
Most of them are on Facebook so they have been catching up on the
news little by little.

Out and About
School Spring Break is over,
and now I think I need a week off just to rest up from my marathon of
redoing my dining room.
With the help of my daughter
Diadem who came to visit for the week with the two grandchildren we
worked on the dining room. We started on Monday by dismantling the
dining room and stripping off the old wall paper and repairing the
walls. After washing and painting the ceiling and the woodwork we
began on Thursday to wall paper and finished up on Friday afternoon.
I am still working on putting things back where I want them and it
may take a few more days to reorganize my room. Of course I have not
yet put everything back in my living room that I just did this past
month. I am still debating on what I want to do with those items that
I removed from my walls and book shelves.
On top of doing the room, the
grandkids kept me busy reading books and playing outside with them
whenever we had the spare moment. The children had the chance to
visit with their Aunt Michelle McLaughlin in Harrington this week.
On Friday evening I attended
the Rock N’Roll Sock Hop at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls. Over
sixty folks gathered in the Hall and danced all night by the music
from the band the Crown
Vics. Poodle
skirts of all colors were the normal dress code for the evening. Even
I got the chance to dance with Andy Hutnik and Joe Bragg along with
others during the evening. It was a great evening socializing with
all that turned out for this fund raiser. I saw folks from Addison,
East Machias, Harrington, Jonesport and Milbridge just dancing the
night away.
Andy and Arlene Hutnik of
Jonesport were voted as the best rock n roll dancers for the evening.
Bonnie Williams and Joe Bragg were voted the best costume.
While we were out getting the
grandkids for an ice-cream Saturday we saw a fox on Great Wass Island
during our ride. Later on we took a hike on the Marshville Road at
the Frank Woodworth Trail. We didn’t get to do all of it as not
only I was beat but little Asa was tired of walking and wanted to
return home. We did get as far as the bench to sit awhile before
turning around and heading back to our vehicle. On Sunday morning
again the grand kids, their mother and I took a walk in the woods
near our home and had a nice little snack along the West Branch River
in Addison. I think I got lots of exercise this week during vacation.
Alas the week ended and my grandchildren were heading out on Monday
morning to go for a visit with their other grandparents in Penobscot
for a week before they return to Boston. We are surely going to miss
the little ones around the house. I am sure by now we have read all
of the books on the shelf to both of the grand-kids not once but many
times.
Happy Birthday wishes go out to
Diadem Strout Washburn on April 30.

Out and About
By
now if you haven’t got your studded tires off your vehicle you need
to do quickly or get fine. I got mine off on Tuesday between my usual
bus runs. Seems nice not hearing those studs making all of that noise
while riding.
It is that time of year when
the dandelions are coming out. I got a mess for Dixie Cirone of
Harrington and for myself on Tuesday April 26. They were some good
eating along with fresh trout that was giving to me.
The History Class of NHS and
their teachers traveled to Cole Transportation on Wednesday where
they interviewed a dozen veterans. After the interviews they were
given a tour of the museum. One of the veterans that I sat in to
listen to was Edward Leonard an army veteran who served in Vietnam.
He spoke on how he survived the war and what he endured during his
tour. I just hope the students that were at this table learned
something from him. Another veteran that was interviewed was William
Dean formerly of Columbia Falls. He told me he had just greeted a
plane load of soldiers returning via the Bangor Airport, and was
heading back for another plane that was due in the afternoon. Mr.
Dean was glad to be one of the veterans on this day to be able to
talk with students from our area.
Thursday morning Carroll and I
traveled to Gouldsboro for his morning doctor appointment and then on
Friday Carroll and I went to Ellsworth and Bangor to do all of our
errands that needed to be done. This was a long day for the both of
us, but another good day that Carroll enjoyed getting out of the
house.
Congratulations to our new
Worthy Matron Eleanor West of Alcyone #71, who was installed on
Friday evening April 29, 2016 at the Masonic Lodge in Milbridge.
Thirty two members were in attendance at this installation.
Saturday April 30, was the
Shrine Circus trip to Bangor with all of the 4th
Graders in the district. The students enjoyed the circus and on their
way back ate at Wendy’s in Ellsworth. I am glad it was a good day
for all of us.
I attended the Shop-a-Palooza
at the Harrington Elementary School on Sunday, and found some great
deals. I found a little for me and a little bit for my grandchildren.
I had a nice visit with Lita
Bagley of Columbia Falls in the afternoon. It is always nice to visit
with her for a chat now and again.
I hear that the Riverlily gift
store is opening this coming week in Milbridge. I will have to get
over and check them out soon.
I see that Nancy Collectables
is opening up for the season on the Wescoqus Road in Addison. Another
place to browse and find that one thing you can’t live without.
Get well wishes go out to Fred
Crowley and Valerie Worcester of Columbia Falls.
Congratulations to Mr &
Mrs Abner Morris of Harrington on their recent wedding.
Condolences go out to the
family of Dana Morris of Harrington on his recent passing.

OUT AND ABOUT
This is the season to begin to
gather free food that is growing all around on my lawn and on others.
Back in the ‘day’ my mom taught me how to gather a fresh mess of
dandelion greens and how to clean them before I put them up for the
winter. She always canned them in quart canning jars, packed them in
solid and added some water before sealing them by bathing them off in
a hot water bath. Since 1974 I have been gathering and putting up at
least 50 quarts of greens every year. Now that the children are no
longer home and there is just the two of us, I don’t need to can
that many now. My mother told me that this was free food just
growing out and about and it was good for me too.
Anyhow, I dug enough for two
meals to go along with the fresh smelts that were caught and given to
us and also was able to give a good size mess to another person who
mentioned to me that he like them.
I am in hopes to get some to
put up to go along with whatever else I can manage to put down cellar
for my supply of food.
On Thursday I traveled with
the high school students to Orono to visit the Page Farm and Home
Museum for a field trip. We saw an original 1855 one room school
house that was moved there on display. The barn was filled with an
assortment of antique items that were used back in the days when I
grew up. Some were used a long time before I was thought of but I
must say a lot of the kitchen items are still being used in my own
home
Carroll and I ventured to the
big town of Machias Friday evening, and three hours later we arrived
home. We took a drive through Jonesport, Beals, Addison, Columbia
Falls, and Columbia. In Columbia Falls we watched six eagles flying
about the town landing while eating our ice-cream.
On Saturday I attended the
quilt show in Cherryfield where there were many lovely quilts on
display. After I left the quilt show Roberta Hammond and I traveled
to Machias for the DAR meeting at the BlueBird Ranch Family
Restaurant for the installation of officers for the Hannah Weston
Chapter.
Later, in the evening on
Saturday May 7, 2016 I attended the Beals Historical Society Annual
Talent Show that was held at the Beals Elementary School. There I met
up with Marilyn and Earnest Kelley celebrating their 65th
Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations go out to them and may they have
a few more years of wedded bliss together.
On Mother’s Day I heard from
all of my five children wishing me Happy Mother’s Day which was
nice as a couple of them live near and the others live out of state.
I even had FaceTime with grandson Oliver of Nevada.
Birthday wishes go out to
Charlie Rathburn on May 10 who turned 23 years old.
Get well wishes to Bunny Look,

On Monday Narraguagus Jr/High

next games will be a bit warmer.
The EDGE program finished up
this past week for the school year. I imagine they are now getting
their programs together for the summer program.
Carroll and I motored to
Ellsworth Wednesday morning to do some errands that needed to be
done. He enjoyed getting out of the house.

Out and About
On
Wednesday I attended the Spring Concert at Harrington Elementary
School where my grandson Konner Strout attends school. The students
all did an excellent job. This was a fun night for all of the parents
and grandparents to go to. Afterwards I enjoyed visiting with Huddy
Peterson of Harrington; it has been awhile since I had dropped in to
see her. We talk about every Sunday evening to catch up on the news.
The Track Team of NHS competed
in Orono on Thursday. It was a long day for all of us, but the
students do enjoy doing track and I enjoy driving them to their
meets.
I was so glad that Saturday
was a good day to work outside. I needed to do my lawn and was able
to get everything done that needed to be done.
Saturday evening I was invited
to attend the Blue and Gold banquet for the cub scouts at the
Cherryfield Congregational Church. The scouts were recognized for
their accomplishments during the year.
Molly and Dick Woodsum have
arrived in Addison for the summer season. I have been by a couple of
times already to visit with them. It sure does seem nice that they
are here, as it is a lot closer to do a visit than traveling to
Winterport.
Addison is growing; we have new
residents; Tanya and Larry Durken from Baltimore have bought the Mary
Simmonds home on the East Side Road. I met them while I was Out and
About on Sunday. Their quince bush on the front lawn is in full bloom
and is quite beautiful. I told them that I had a piece of that bush
just not as big as theirs at my place. This is a new adventure for
them both, so stop by even if it is a door yard visit and meet them.
At the Table of Plenty, many
folks were out I enjoy chatting with everyone there on Sunday
afternoon.
A bad car accident took place
over the weekend; condolences go out to the families that were
affected.
Condolences go out to the
family of Jennie Ganiel, she will be greatly missed in the area.

going to this every year.
Twenty two folks gathered in
Gouldsboro for the Tracy Reunion on Saturday May 28, 2016. The day
couldn’t be more perfect for a gathering of friends and relatives.
I was invited as a guest as I am not a direct descendent of a Tracy
but I did fine that I was related to several through other lines. I
even met a Facebook friend there as well. After a great potluck
lunch most of us went on a hike thru a trail that took us to the
shore where we saw a huge eagle condo. That nest was the largest one
that I have ever seen. All you had to do was look up in the tree and
there it was. We even got to see an eagle in the nest.
As we walked along the shore it
was pointed out to us that across the water we could see what was
left of a Silver Mine. I enjoyed listening to the history of the
Tracy family that gathers there every year at Jonathan Landing. It
was a perfect day to relax and enjoy the surrounding area while
visiting with the Tracy Family in Gouldsboro. Plus I am invited back
for the August gathering of the clan on the third Sunday, August 21
with a promise to make mincemeat turnovers for them.
On Sunday evening Carroll and I
was invited to Parris & Sarah-Ann Hammond’s home in Harrington
for a lovely meal with the family. Jonathan, Danielle & Artrena
Plummer, Susan, Harris and Caleb Norton, Abby Plummer, Stephen
Plummer, and Steve and Bunnie Plummer were all there.

Out
and About
This
past week I have been working in the garden, preparing it to plant my
vegetables. It is not quite done yet, but I am in hopes that I will
have it about finished this coming week. We desperately need rain for
the seeds to grow.
Over
seventy-five folks gathered on Memorial Day at the Mayhew Library in
Addison, for a Memorial Program. A wreath was placed in the water at
the Addison Landing and then everyone went to the Cemetery on the
Hill for the ceremony in memory of those who lost their lives in the
wars.
Some
students from DW Merritt School traveled to Cole Museum on Wednesday
June 1st.
It was a lovely day for them; we all had our lunch on the lawn of
the Museum before returning to school. I even got the chance to take
some students around and show them some of the items in the museum.
Friday
afternoon I watched my grandson Konner Strout play baseball at
Bigelow Park in Harrington. It was one of those days you needed your
winter coat on, it was so cold, but at least the black flies weren’t
out.
The
Track Team of Narraguagus traveled to Dover/ Foxcroft Academy for
their track meet on Saturday. They had to leave before the award
ceremony as the seniors needed to be back for their prom night. While
I waited for them I checked out the grand opening of the new Dollar
Tree store there as I was parked close to the store. I had my lawn
chair and sat in the shade of the bus and read my book while I
waited.
Later
in the evening I went over to see the seniors in all of their finery
at their prom. They sure do clean up well. The girls had some lovely
dresses for the prom and the guys were all handsome in their suits.
On
Sunday a good crowd was out in Cherryfield for the Table of Plenty,
it is always great to see the same folks that go there, a nice way to
end the weekend.
Graduation
is coming up for Narraguagus on June 10, the seniors will be moving
on to college in the fall and beginning to become adults or so we
hope.
David
McLaughlin is gaining every day from his operation; he is now out and

birthday party for Sumner Thompson. Many of his family and friends,
about 71 or so came out to help him celebrate. It was a long day for
me but I was glad to have gone. I met some lovely folks while I was
there and enjoyed talking with a 90 year old lady and her son with
purple hair and met one of Sumner’s relatives that came all the way
from Courtenay, B C, Canada.

School
is out for the summer, all of the kiddos were quite happy about this.
The
Milbridge Elementary traveled to Addison on Monday the 13 for the
presentation of the Puppet Show. The students really enjoyed it.
The
end of the year BBQ was held at the high school on Friday at noon.
Another great meal put on by the staff.
I
have been busy all week working in the garden a never ending job, but
things are growing. Now I am hoping the deer and other animals can’t
figure out how to get to the vegetables. I have lots of wire and only
I know where to step and get around it all. Or rather I think I do, I
have been known to get myself tangled up in it. I need to do some
more mulching and hoeing up the potatoes this coming week.
I
have dahlia bulbs to give away to anyone that wants to plant a few in
their garden.
My
son got my blades put on my riding lawn mower so now I can try and
keep up with the grass growing.
I
am finding lots of cousins through DNA testing; several have
contacted me already on Ancestry.
On
Saturday the 18 Milbridge Alumni held their reunion at the Milbridge
Elementary School. The Eastern Star member of Alcyone #71 put on the
meal for them.
I
hope all the fathers had a lovely day on Sunday, Carroll heard from
his children either by phone or Facebook. We had a quiet day here at
home and then I took Carroll to Bayview Take Out on Beals Island for
supper. During the day I worked on genealogy, DNA information and
also did a little bit in the garden.
I
noticed that Dr. Kris Morin was at her home in Addison for a few days
this past week.
Molly
and Dick Woodsum are back in Addison from spending a couple of days
in Winterport. On Father’s Day their daughter Kimberly came for a
visit, it was also Molly’s birthday.
While
we were out and about on Sunday we stopped by Earnest and Marilyn
Kelley in Jonesport as they were out enjoying the sun on their porch
and visited awhile.

Another
busy week has come and gone. The garden seems to be growing as I
hoped; now I am trying to catch up on the lawn work and weeding out
the asparagus garden. My neighbors the Paul’s have weeded theirs so
this has made me think I had to get mine done as well.
Approximately
35 bus drivers attended the MAPT Regional Conference in Machias at

Charlene Gray and her family that had just arrived for the weekend.
On
Saturday June 25, 2016 a family gathering of the Ronald Gray and
Charlene Tucker families was held at Indian River, Addison, Maine
with many relatives coming from near and far to attend. I was blessed
to be able to make it and enjoyed talking with folks that I met
there. I represented my husband’s Tucker side through his late
mother Sarah Small (Tucker) Strout of Milbridge and Cherryfield,
Maine.
In
the evening Carroll and I attended the 50th Wedding
Anniversary of Hulda and Charles Peterson of Harrington at the VFW
Hall in Harrington that was put on by their sons: Roger, Chuck, Mike
and Tim Peterson. Close to hundred fifty came and congratulated them
on their milestone during the evening. “The Prairie Dog Band “of
Bangor played during the evening for entertainment with toe stomping
music.
Lots of great pot luck dishes topped off with a lovely cake was serve
buffet style during the event.
The Peterson sons and their mother sang their favorite song “Family
Tradition” to everyone with the band as backup later in the evening
for a surprise.
On Sunday June 26, 2016, friends and family came out for a surprise
80th birthday party at the WAA building in Columbia Falls
for Dixie Cirone of Harrington.
Afterwards Carroll and I went on a ride to Roque Bluffs and he said
he had never seen such an amazing amount of white roses along the
road at the park. I stopped by the Roque Bluffs Art Gallery and
Learning Center to see what was going on. There I met Joanne Halpin
of Milbridge with some of her art work on display. I also met Robert
McCollum and his display of art work. I also found out that this
showing was over for the duration and a new one will be available on
Saturday July 23 and Sunday July 24 from 12:00 noon to 4:30 pm. This

Thursday evening and we got to meet little Emma for the first time.
On
Saturday evening Peter Sawyer, Judy and Kathy Sprague, Emma Saint
Woodberry, June and Harry Rolfe and myself were guest of Steve and
Jan Morrison of Milbridge. We all got caught up on the news of our

The
neighbors have been shooting off fireworks so we did get to see some
as I did not travel to see them in Cherryfield or Jonesport.
Everyone
during the weekend has been preparing for their 4th

Out
and About
We
enjoyed spending the 4th
with our family at Schoodic Lake in Columbia. Peter Sawyer, Judy and
her daughter Kathy Sprague and granddaughter Emma also came for the
day. Emma got to meet some more family and her second cousin Konner
Strout.
Emma
even got to swim in the lake while having fun at Strout’s
Look Out. Everyone
had an enjoyable day.
I
heard from Flo Mayne this week and she mentioned that it has been one
year as of July 13 that she lost her brother Glendon Crowley. She
wanted me to know that her family, Bob, Bobby and Sarah have not
forgotten him and they miss him more each day.
On
Friday July 8 over thirty folks attended the Pleasant River
Historical Society meeting held at the Church on the Hill, Ridge
Road, Addison, Maine at 7 PM. The presentation was with Bud Warren of
the Tide Mill Institute on Tidemills
In Our Area.
I must say I never thought how
one was made or how old they have been in existence. One has been
documented found in Ireland in the 'get this' Year of 619, In Iran in
the year 1000, the tide mills was said to be called Wonders
to Behold.
In 1607 the first one in the
New World was found in Nova Scotia, then in 1630 one was built in
Boston and then in 1634, York, Maine had one. A drawn picture was
found of this mill in 1650, the first to show how they were made.
All up and down the coast of
Europe, Ireland, and Wales had lots of tide mills along their coastal
waters before the New World got theirs
Mr. Warren has documentation of
the tide mills along the coast of Maine and can show where they were.
He may still have more areas to check out in our Downeast area as
folks began to tell him of where they knew of one back in the day.
This
meeting was very informative on tide mills and we were told that we
should find out more information of them and write them down before
the locations are lost forever.
If
you would like to hear more, Mr. Warren said that there will be a
meeting in Boston in November that we could come and hear. Wouldn’t
he be surprise if some of us did happen to come to his meeting?
Condolences to Joyce Barquinha’s family of
Texas and formerly of Columbia, Maine on her passing, she will be
greatly missed by all that knew her family.
Get well wishes to Jessica Hatt’s family of
Harrington that were in the accident this past week, by now they
should be out of the hospital.
Please keep Fred Crowley of Columbia Falls in
your thoughts; he has again started a new treatment.
Joan Ramsay of Addison is need of prayers to
help her get through her time of need. She is going through some
heavy health issues.

Members of the Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters
of the American Revolution gather for their annual picnic meeting
that was held at the Gates House, home of the Machiasport Historical
Society in Machiasport, on Sat., July 9th. Members were able to
tour the Gates House.
The Gates House has a lovely genealogy room
that includes Census Records, family genealogies, birth, marriage,
death and cemetery records that are all available for research. They
also have a copy of the Abstract of Registration and Enrollment
Records for the Machias Customs District 1780-1930.
The Gates House is open in July and August from
12:30-4:30 on Tuesday thru Friday and can be open at other times by
appointment. Admission is free but donations are appreciated. This is
a must see on your list of Historical buildings.
Steve and Jan Morrison again had a lovely meal
at their cottage in Milbridge on Saturday evening July 10. Enjoying
the great food and conversation with the Morrison’s were Peter
Sawyer, Judy Sprague, Harry and June Rolfe and I.
Judy Sprague, Kathy and Emma returned to their
home in Killeen, Texas on Thursday July 14 after spending a
delightful time in Downeast Maine. I am sure little Miss Emma will
remember her first trip to Maine and meeting more of her family. We
will be looking for her to come back in a couple of years for another
visit.
On Sunday July 10 I traveled to Boston to spend
a few days with my grandchildren Asa and Mabel and then in the
evening we visited some friends for a BBQ. It was great seeing these
folks again when I go to Boston.
On Monday we walked Asa to his School Camp
where he got to play with other children of his age group. Mabel even
got to visit the school and spend some time in the outdoor area
before we left to go home.
Mabel got lots of reading time while I was
there and Asa got to play Ninja with his Nana outside. All in all I
think we had a great visit.
On Saturday July 16, over forty folks gathered
at the Washburn resident to celebrate the birthdays of Mabel and her
father Jesse with a BBQ. I enjoyed socializing with all of Diadem’s
and Jesse’s friends and I also met some new ones that I hope to see
again the next time I am in Boston.
I
returned home on Sunday the 17, but first got to meet up with an old
friend Debbie Howe of Pittsfield for lunch at the Couch House
Restaurant in Brewer.
I
also enjoyed running into Joanne Smith and her husband of Milbridge
as they were leaving the restaurant. They also had been out and about
on a fine day.
Now
I am back home and getting ready for another busy week.
Condolences
go out to David Hammond’s family of Harrington; he will be greatly
missed by all.
Happy
belated birthday wishes to Mabel Washburn who turned two on July
12 and her dad Jesse Washburn on July 13, and to Oliver Strout who
turned one on July 17th.

Bus
drivers of SAD #37: Ronie Strout, Kevin and Marianne Rice, Lorie and
Dave Mathews, Al and Mary Moore, attended the annual MAPT conference
at Sugar Loaf on Jul 20, 21 and 22, 2016.
We
attended the following workshops: Take
This Job & Love I If You See Something, Say Something,
Understanding Autism, Understanding Epilepsy & Seizures, and You
are the Best – Why We Trust You With the Lives of Our Children with
special Presenter: Michael Dorm, Safe Havens Int’l Inc.
on Friday morning.
The
Conference was long with sitting in class all day on Thursday, but I
believe what classes that I attended were beneficial to me. I do so
enjoy going every year and meeting up with other bus drivers that I
have met over the years that I have gone.
I
missed the benefit supper for Joan Ramsay on Friday evening but heard
there was a good turn out to support such a wonderful person. I got
as far as Pittsfield on Friday evening and met up with a scouter
friend Debbie Howe and had a wonderful meal at Ground Round in Bangor
with her friend Bob and her Dad Mike then I spent the night with her
before traveling to Lewiston/Auburn.
Family
and friends attended the outdoor wedding of Gordon Paul and Kara
Wordell at the Prospect Hill Golf Course, Auburn, Maine followed by
the reception inside on Saturday July 23, 2016. Besides myself, my
son Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout and my daughter Diadem, Jesse,
Asa and Mabel Strout attended their wedding.
This
has been quite a busy week for me with me going out and about to
everything that I have been invited to do. I am not sure if I missed
anything around the local area, if I did it could not be helped.

Out
and About
The past week started off with us on Monday heading to Gouldsboro
Clinic, then to Ellsworth for lunch and a stop at Goodwill and
Walmart before returning home. Sometimes I wonder why it has to take
all day to do a few little things.
It seems about everyone around and about mowed their lawn this past
week, it was good to get Carroll out onto the lawn mower to do the
bigger part while I used the push mower to trim around the shrubs and
trees.
I got one of those Fitbit and have been tracking my steps for the
week and my daughter Diadem challenged me to a Workweek Hustle, I was
slow in getting off and running but did make it over 50,000 steps and
moved ahead of her. I believe it was pushing that lawn mower that got
me ahead. Needless to say I needed some down time during the weekend
as I am beat. Just maybe I will get a bit fit with using my Fitbit.
Thursday evening thirty folks turned out to the Jonesport Historical
Society at the Sawyer Building in Jonesport for the talk on the Jaffa
American Colony in Israel given by Jean Holmes. This was the 150th
year anniversary that 156 people from the surrounding Jonesport area
that sailed to Jaffa in 1866 to start a new life. I have attended
other talks on this and have read the book The Forerunners
written by Reed Holmes about this event.
Friday the 29th was a pretty busy day as I first had an
eye appointment in Ellsworth at 8 am than had to stop at Walmart,
Gouldsboro Clinic, and the Supt. Office in Harrington on my way back
home. Dropped off my items and headed to Jonesport where I spent an
enjoyable afternoon visiting and chatting with Arlene Hutnik during
our luncheon.
I was not done for the day as I headed home to get my husband his
supper before heading out to the Open House for Ada and Frank Graham
at the Milbridge Historical Society Museum. Close to seventy folks
gathered to acknowledge what the Grahams have done over the years for
the McClellan Park in Milbridge and the programs they started in the
early 70’s for children to learn about the tidal pools at the Park
and the nature trails at Weald Bethel in Cherryfield.
On Saturday Carroll and I went to the Milbridge Days to see the
parade and then to the lobster feed at the Fire Station. A fun day to
be out and about.

Out
and About
On
Sunday July 31 we decided to go for a ride and ended up in Carmel and
Levant where we visited with my granddaughters Jasmine and Brittany
and their mother Kim after a quick visit with my son Matthew. We had
lunch with them before we headed home. We had a lovely Sunday drive
on the spur of the moment.
Over
thirty friends and family members gathered Monday for the graveside
service for Doris “Faye” Gardner of Old Town. Faye a daughter of
Norman and Florence (Reynolds) Mallar of Whitneyville was born on
March 26, 1921. I met her after she had helped me come in contact
with other members of the Reynolds family. She will surely be missed
by all of her extended family.
This
past week I spent two afternoons at the Cherryfield Library and
documented what the library had for genealogy and family histories in
their genealogy/history section. I have made a list for the library
so that people that are searching for information will know what is
there. I have also posted it on genealogy sites on Facebook. There is
a wealth of information just waiting for researchers to come in and
find their long lost ancestor.
Saturday
Carroll and I drove his sister Ruberta Plummer to Ellsworth so that
she could get some errands done. We had a pleasant day and enjoyed
lunch at the Riverside Café before returning home.
Saturday
evening I enjoyed visiting with Steve and Jan Morrison of Milbridge
and catching up on local news with Peter Sawyer and June and Harry
Rolfe. Good food and great conversation was enjoyed by all.
Blueberries
are now being harvested on the barrens; if you take a ride you will
see the harvesters raking berries 24 hours a day. At night it is
really something to see them harvesting with all of the lights on the
tractors.

Out and About
It
seems to have been a busy week for me after all. I have done some
canning in between filling in on the EDGE Program picking up students
and taking them home for a couple of days.
On
Tuesday I was the docent at the Milbridge Historical Society Museum
and had the chance to also document some of their genealogy
information that they have on hand whenever I was not busy with the
museum. I enjoy meeting the folks that come into the museum and
talking with them. One couple from Texas stopped by Joe and Linda
Fernald that I had met a few times; they were here on vacation
visiting friends and family. I also met up with them again that
evening at the Historical Program and at the Cherryfield Public
Supper on Wednesday the 10th.
The
Milbridge Historical Society meeting had a nice turn out on August 9,
2016, for the talk on Bees given by Ed Flannigan of Wyman Blueberry
Company. I actually heard this talk at another Historical Society
earlier this past year.
I
attended the public supper in Cherryfield on Wednesday and enjoyed
chatting with everyone that I knew there. Just not enough time to
visit with them all, so I have to pick and choose where I sit so to
get caught up on any news that might be happening. I did say hello to
Hazel Anderson, as she came with Joe and Linda Fernald that are here
for the week visiting from Texas.
Thursday
evening seventeen members attended the Eastern Star meeting in
Milbridge, we enjoyed conversation and snacks after the meeting
downstairs. It is always good to see these folks at least once a
month in our busy schedules.
Friday
evening forty four folks came to the Pleasant River Historical
meeting at the Addison Town Hall to hear Steve
Haynes of MDI our guest speaker on “ADDISON
GRANITE QUARRIES”.
This
was
another
interesting topic to learn about.
The
Hannah Weston Chapter of DAR held their monthly meeting at the Burham
Tavern in Machias on Saturday with ten members in attendance. If you
haven’t had the chance to learn the history of the Tavern, stop on
by when you are in Machias during the Blueberry Festival.
I
attended the Saturday night gathering at Steve and Jan Morrison in
Milbridge along with Peter Sawyer, June and Harry Rolf and Tom and
Gloria Tanton. This was another lovely meeting with old friends and
new friends.
Sunday
Carroll and I again took a ride up on the barrens to watch the
harvesters rake the berries. If
you haven’t had the chance to take a ride on the barrens, you
should because when you do the blueberry barrens this time of year
look like a patchwork quilt with the different clones of colors on
the fields. After the berries have been raked the fields will turn
red which tells us that summer is almost over and with the crisp air
in the morning it now tells us that fall will soon be here and our
summer is almost over.
Condolences
go out to the family of Bruce Elliott Roberts of Machias, Maine, son
of Eleanor Galen on his passing.

Out and About
A new sign was put up going into South Addison recently and someone
this past week has defaced it. There is an award if anyone knows who
might have done this.
On Friday evening I attended the service at the Church Hill Community
Center here in Addison. A number of folks turned out for this. It was
surely different than what I had expected to hear.
There were many folks that turned out for the blueberry festival in
Machias on Saturday; my sister-in-law Ruberta Plummer and I spent the
day enjoying it. We even stayed for the bake bean supper that the
Masonic Lodge put on.
On Sunday August 21, 2016, I attended the Tracy Reunion in
Gouldsboro. The weather was great to meet old friends and make new
friends of the Tracy Clan. Folks came from all over Maine:- Abbott,
Addison, Augusta, Bar Harbor, Brooklin, Caribou, Edgecomb, Glenburn,
Guilford, Gouldsboro, Houlton, Hudson, Industry, Kennebunk,
Litchfield, Milbridge, Seal Cove, Searsport, South Portland,
Steuben, Stolkhom, Winslow, and Winter Harbor.
The Clan had some from other parts of the country: Point Arena,
California, Sebring, Florida, Somerset, Massachusetts, Seaford,
Virginia, and Port Angeles, Washington.
It was good to see Roberta Moore Golden, a classmate from
Narraguagus High School; it has been 48 years since we graduated
together from the school.
Susan Norton of Jonesboro and her children Abby and Caleb are on a
Caribbean Cruise; Caleb celebrated his birthday Carnival style on
August 20 with a small birthday cake made especially for him. I
heard that they were enjoying their trip.
I had a phone call from Bob Stevens of Florida asking for
information on the Stevens family of Addison. He actually wanted to
know if I could find the cemetery stone of Edmund Stevens an early
settler of Addison; he needed documentation of Edmunds birth and
death. He even told me where I might fine the gravestone; I have yet
had the time to check it out as it is actually in Columbia Falls. He
was taking a vacation in Bar Harbor but did not have time to travel
here to check it out for himself.
Our son Zachary Strout and his crew have finished up the harvesting
on Columbia barrens and have now gone to Canada for a couple of weeks
to rake their berries. The blueberry season is wrapping up fast now.
We have traveled to the barrens about everyday so that Carroll could
get out and see the harvesters at work. The blueberries have been so
beautiful looking across the fields with the different clones of
colors before they are raked.
We have been picking blackberries and blueberries to put in the
freezer lately and to have some fresh ones for dessert.
Get well wishes goes out to my brother Philip Worcester of Columbia
Falls, he is under the weather for about six weeks. He seems to get
out of the blueberry season for the last three summers due to health
problems; his wife just hopes next year he will be able to help with
the blueberries. We will see,’ me thinks’ he has nine lives and
he has used up part of them so he best be on his best behavior from
now on.
The Milbridge Historical Society Museum will be closing for the
season on August 30 so if you want to see this year’s display now
is the time.
As I was out and about on Sunday I noticed that The Henry D. Moore
Parish House and Library in Steuben posted on their sign that they
will be having Paper Airplane Fun on Wednesday, August 24 at 10 AM
and a public Bake Bean Supper on Saturday, August 27 at 5 PM.

Steve Haynes
On Friday August 12, 2016, Steve Haynes of Mount Desert Island gave a
talk to the Pleasant River Historical Society at the Addison Town
Hall. He shared with us his knowledge and a slide show of quarries
that operated in the Addison area. He spoke of the pink, grey and
black granite that was sent throughout the world from our town. Mr.
Haynes brought tools to show us that were used in the trade of
cutting the stones. He had a small piece of granite that he
demonstrated how the granite was split apart. A fascinating bit of
history of our granite industry from the past brought to life by Mr.
Haynes.

Out
and About
The
Washburn grandchildren, Asa and Mabel and their mother Diadem spent
the week visiting with us and we all did some activities during the
week: hiking at Petit Manan Preserve, swimming at Lamoine Beach State
Park, hiking at Frank Woodward Preserve and swimming at Roque Bluffs.
The children enjoyed spending time with their Aunt Michelle in
Harrington one day and Asa also had a sleep over with her one night.
Konner
Strout had a sleep over with us on Tuesday evening before heading out
for some more socializing with a classmate and his Aunt in
Whitefield, Maine on Thursday.
Sherri
and Dick Paul attended the Gordon Family Reunion on Sunday August 21.
They thought about 150 was there on such a great day to visit with
family they haven’t seen in a while.
Molly
and Dick Woodsum are back in town after spending some time in
Winterport for some appointments. I am in hopes that they are able to
stay here for another month enjoying our little town so I can get to
visit with them.
Caleb
Paul and friends was visiting in Addison over the weekend. Caleb
stopped by but found everyone taking a nap at the Strout household.
A
very large flock of Turkeys were seen next door one morning which is
not a good thing as they can demolish a garden in no time.
I
received a phone call from Sandra Stevens of Washington D.C on
Tuesday. She wanted to thank me in sending her way some new
information on the Steven line that she has worked on for forty
years. Bob Stevens contacted her this past week to check out what she
knew on their line after he contacted me and I referred him to her.
I
have had some folks calling me to see what I know on this area
genealogy of families. All I can say is that I may have some
information that may or may not be documented that I can get them
started hopefully on the right path. It is up to them to document all
information on their lines.
After
returning from a soccer game in Bucksport with the NHS team on
Tuesday evening, I had a phone call from a man from California
stating he was looking for more information of his ancestors Stillman
Look McGee/ Magee from Columbia. His ancestor left Columbia during
the Gold Rush of 1849 and traveled on the ship Belgrade to
California. The family did not know that a brother Truman Wilson
McGee also went to California and settled there. The other siblings
stayed in Columbia and married locals and never heard from either of
the brothers as far as we know. Michael Quinn is in hopes to come to
Maine and see where his ancestor came from this fall. It will be
interesting to meet him and show him around.
The
new MSAD #37 Adult Education Course Offerings are out for the fall.
Another genealogy class will be offered if we can fine five that want
to take it. The classes will be for 10 weeks on Mondays beginning
September 19, 6 to 8 pm. Pre-Registration is required. Contact the
High School at 483-2746 for more information.

We
have made a couple of trips to Ellsworth this past week, now I think
our appointments are over for a while.
The
schools are up and running for the new school year, I have some new
students riding my bus. It is always kind of hectic the first week or
so to get back into the routine of driving the bus. One little p-k
student has given her mother some cute stories about her first couple
of days at school, so I think mom should keep a diary of them for
later references.
On
Thursday evening twenty two members attended the stated Eastern Star
meeting in Milbridge. We had a great fellowship afterwards sharing
and catching up on news with other members that were there.
Phil
and Kim Pitula of Winterport, Maine enjoyed their weekend visiting
with her parents Dick and Molly Woodsum at their cottage in Addison.
Congratulations go out to them on their wedding anniversary this
week.
Saturday
Carroll and I were out for the whole day in and around Ellsworth, on
our way home we stopped into for a quick hello to Huddy Peterson of
Harrington before enjoying a meal at Scovils in Harrington, this was
Carroll’s first time going into a restaurant to eat.

Sanford Kelley and some attendees:
Friday
evening September 9, 2016 Pleasant River Historical Society had their
monthly meeting at the Union Hall in Columbia Falls with guest
speaker Sanford Kelly of Jonesport, Maine speaking on the history of
Maine Wild Blueberries.
He
told us about Alexander Baring of London who came to the Pleasant
River area in 1796 to view the million acres of land in Washington
and Hancock Counties in which his firm had purchased a half interest
from General William Bingham of Philadelphia. His report said that he
found the soil perfectly barren and covered with a short kind of
heath and no wood. That it had the appearance of having been burnt
and the soil so hard that it can never have been good that nothing
would grow on it.
Tradition says that the barrens were first burned over by the Native
Americans to encourage growth of the berries long before 1796.
Gathering blueberries on the barrens was a public privilege for more
than a hundred years after the towns were first settled. Whole
families came from afar to gather berries on the barrens for their
own use and for sale. Then in 1871 William Freeman a lawyer who owned
some 70,000 acres of land decided he wanted pickers to pay him a fee
for the berries that they took off his land. He charged them half a
cent a quart on the berries that they received from his land and
apparently all agreed to pay except Underwood Company of Jonesport.
After a five-year battle Freeman had the Supreme Court of the State
of Maine establish the rights of owners of blueberry land to collect
“stumpage” on berries gathered on their property.
Freeman decided to control the harvesting by leasing land to people
who took over the care of the land. By doing so Freeman received
one-half cent a quart, while the pickers’ one and half cent up to
three cents on a quart and the lease holder got the rest from what he
sold the berries for.
In
1882 the blueberry industry changes with rakes made by Abijah and
Franklin Tabbutt of Columbia Falls and with some modifications today
a bit different than the Tabbutt rakes were. Also in the 1900’s the
berries were beginning to be trucked off the barrens as automobiles
were being used to replace the oxen’s.
The earliest of canneries in Washington County were known as early as
1866. Sanford list of these canneries in 1922 were: Washington
County Canning Co., Gaddis Bros, Machias valley Co-Op, Diego Packing
Co., Chandler River Packing Co., La & A.C. Logie, Pleasant River
Caning Co., H.S. Kane, Saco Valley Canning Co., Riverside Canning
Co-Op, Jasper Wyman & Sons, and A. L Stewart Canning Co.
Later a man from the Midwest found lava in the berries that he had
bought. This came from the fruit fly and everyone needed to shut down
the production of the berries. It took five years to come up with a
white dust that was sprayed on the berries by a hand crank machine to
take care of this problem.
In 1946 a committee was formed through the University of Maine and a
law was passed that everyone that raised blueberries pay a 1 and ¼
mil a pound for research. That is when the Blueberry Hill Farm in
Jonesboro was built. The name came from a contest by having local
students name the new building.
In 1928 the blueberry growers realized that the berries could be
frozen to keep them, but it wasn’t till 1957 that the first freezer
was built by George Allen and in 1967 A.L. Stewart built the first
one in Washington County.
Advertising of the product has been done in papers, magazines to Dr.
Oz and Oprah talking about it on their shows to social media.
Blueberries have revolved from hand picking in quarts, to using hand
rakes and freezing the berries to present day blueberry harvesters
raking in 300 to 400 pound totes.

Last
Saturday on my way back from Ellsworth, I happened to stop in to
visit The Town of Gouldsboro Historical Society Museum that is in the
1884 Old Town House. By chance it happened to be their last day open
for the season.
I
did see that they have some genealogy on a book shelf. Here are some
of it that I noticed: General David Cobb and Cobb Family, Corea
Cemetery Deed, Tombstone Inscriptions, Winter Harbor Cemeteries, The
Family Jordan with 3 Volumes, Jones Family, the George and Alfareta
Hooper family, The Rosebrook Family, Sargent Family, Shaw Family, The
Stratton Family of Hancock, The Descendants of Jonathan Tracy and
Abigail Riggs Tracy, Inhabitants of Gouldsboro Point, Tracy Reunion
Assoc. Newsletters, Taft Tree Talk – News-letters of the Taft
Family Association, Fletcher Taft Wood & Family, Noah Young
Family, Some Obituaries, Gouldsboro Families from A to Z by J.
Jordan, and also Portraits from A to Z.
There
are Vessels and Marine Information available to look at and many
other displays that I did not document in the little time I was
there.
They
have on display the hearth stone from the home of Jonathan and
Abigail Tracy at Gouldsboro Point. It resided at the original
homestead site from 1762 until 2008 when it was brought to the museum
by the Tracy Reunion Assoc. for safe keeping.
There
was so much stuff to look at so I guess it will be on my list to
re-visit next summer. and should be on yours too.
On
Monday I did go to Machias to view the movie “To
KeepThe Light”
that was made in Jonesport two years ago. I don’t know actually
what I was expecting to see, all I can say, it was different and I
suppose there will be others that will write about it and their take
on it.
Milbridge
Historical Society
On
Tuesday evening September 13, 2016 about thirty folks gathered to
hear Larry Smith guest speaker at the Milbridge Historical Society
meeting, Mr. Smith gave us a brief history of where he came from in
Cherryfield first and how he ended up working at Grindstone Neck.
This
was an interesting talk with lots of photos in a slide show
presentation and information on what he does there as caretaker of
forty six homes where he has worked as a caretaker for forty six
years.
He
even mentioned that he had used so many cedar shingles that the
company called him and wanted to do a documentary on him. They said
he was their biggest customer in all of the State of Maine. The
documentary which he narrated for them was called Shingles Made in
Maine.
Jonesport
Historical Society
About
twenty five members of the Historical Society gathered Thursday
evening September 16, 2016 at the Jonesport Historical Society to
hear Art Scipione of Roque Bluffs give a presentation on early
American tools used by our early tradesmen to build our homes, barns,
and ships from 1600-1900.
The
tools that were shown in a slide show were from the Colonial Era
1607-1776, Federal Era 1776-1837, and Victorian Era 1837-1901.
One
of the first known vessels built in North America was at Popham,
Maine in 1607, a colonial small ship called Virginia. Mr. Scipione
showed slides of tools that would have been used to build this ship
with along with the history of them.
We
saw photos of tools to join timbers, tools that a local blacksmith
would have, tools to build log homes in the 1600s, tools used for
ship framing and planking, tools in a sail maker’s kit, Block
maker’s tools, and caulker tools.
He
also noted that a Viking tool kit in a Stockholm, Sweden Museum has a
drawknife dated 100 A.D. on display.
This
was an interesting and informative presentation to have seen and I
hope that I will see him at other Historical Societies programs.
Maine
Genealogical Society Annual Conference
On
Saturday many members of the Maine Genealogical Society attended the
40th
Anniversary of the Genealogical Society held at Jeff’s Catering in
Brewer, Maine
The
registration and visit with vendors and exhibitors started at 8 a.m.
and throughout the conference we were able to check out the vendors
wares.
I
got to hear just one of the speakers that were offered during the
day. I listened to Judy Russell known as The Legal Genealogist who is
a ‘genealogist with a law degree. Her topics were on Staying
Out of Trouble-The Rights and Responsibilities of Today’s

Ancestors.

I

Another
busy week in Downeast Maine, the Phys. Ed Class of Narraguagus goes
twice a week to Cherryfield for their canoeing and kayaking class and
I get to drive them. While I wait I take my walk for the day and
every day I can see some changes in the leaves turning.
These
past few days have been great about working outside. I got my
potatoes dug for the winter and gathered my few vegetables that the
deer left for me. Maybe I will get lucky and the deer will clean out
the rows for me before it’s rototilled for the winter. I do know
for sure that the deer and turkeys will not roll up my wire and pull
my stakes for me. They just love getting their meals from me and like
some I know they do not clean up afterwards.
On
Wednesday October 21, a few residents gathered at Addison Point to
watch a 94 foot bridge made in Winterport being hosted onto a barge
from Southwest Harbor. The bridge was headed to its new home
connecting John White Island to the Main land.
On
Saturday we traveled to Unity to attend the Common Ground Fair and to
visit with the grandchildren that were there with their parents.
Carroll and I enjoyed getting out and seeing the sights at the fair.
My
grandchildren enjoyed me pushing them around in their stroller as I
made it act like a race car and doing wheelies. Oh well at least we
had fun even if I looked foolish.
Later
in the evening we attended a surprise birthday party in Orono for our
friend Alice Trott. She was totally surprised by it all. We got to
visit with folks that we have not seen in a number of years. Maybe we
can get out and socialize with some of them a little more often in
the coming year.

Turkeys
are over taking us here on the Ridge, they are every where’s. They
just walk right up my driveway and make themselves home in the yard.
We can’t get rid of them. I see them in Columbia Falls, Columbia,
Harrington and Addison when I am out on the bus.
I
enjoyed visiting with Debbie & Steve Winters on Wednesday when I
was in Ellsworth running errands. They will be returning to Florida
soon for the winter. Hopefully next summer when they are up this way,
we can get together again.
I
saw the sign at Jordan’s saying they will be closing for the season
on October 10. It seems they just opened, how time flies, summer is
over and fall is upon us. There was a heavy frost in some places this
week, but did not touch my garden. I guess we are in a warmer spot
for the moment.
The
Phys Ed. Class got rained on Tuesday morning when they went hiking on
“Young Tunk Trail” at Sprague Falls in Cherryfield.
Starting
October 3, the EDGE Program will be starting up in all of the
schools. This means the bus drivers will be busy getting them home
later on after their program ends every afternoon.
Chris
Dorr came home for a visit this past week and took his wife Toby on a
tour of his home town Columbia. He took her on the barrens, and
visited the old hunting camp at El Meadow and got to visit with some
of his friends from long ago. He even stopped in to his old high
school – Narraguagus and visited.
He
was very disappointed that he was unable to visit with his step
father Roger Libby while he was here. The family that lives with
Roger did not allow it and Chris may not be back again for a long
time. Sad isn’t it that family does these things.
The
Chinese Auction at the Milbridge Historical Museum in Milbridge did
very well even though it was changed in the paper to a Basket Raffle.
I guess we did not know what a Basket Raffle was, but after searching
on the internet it is about the same thing as a Chinese Auction but
using baskets or boxes to take tickets on. I had folks asking me what
this meant, so now we all know. We learn something new every day.
The
Harrington Oktoberfest activities are over for another year. The
parade was little but showed us what a small town can do with what
they have to work with for a parade with: Anah Mini cars and boats, a
pumpkin float, fire engines, ambulance, old cars, four wheelers,
Narraguagus Pride, Harrington Health Center, Lady Knights, Follow the
Yellow Brick Road, kids train and Santa Claus were some that I saw.
The sideliners got to catch the candy sent their way.
Lots
of activities were also held at the Bigelow Park with bounce Houses,
Free Food, Laser Tag, Kids Train, Karaoke, Craft Vendors and DJ
Kendall.
Twelve
members gathered for the Washington County Historical and
Genealogical Society in Machias on Saturday October 1 for the
meeting.
Discussion
was held on the Historical Societies that own their own buildings and
what resources they have.
An
update on what resources that have been donated to the Heritage
Center so far and what are anticipated soon to be donated. It is in
hopes that the Heritage Center will be open and up and running next
summer. There are still a lot more to do to organize the amount of
genealogy that has come in. I myself have yet to visit and see the
work that has been done so far. That will be on my agenda hopefully
soon.
Those

Out
and About
The
weather has really been wonderful this past week for the Phys Ed
class that has been canoeing and kayaking at Stillwater in
Cherryfield. Couple of the classes has been able to hike the Young
Tunk Trail which is .67 miles. While I am waiting I try to walk at
least a mile and take foliage pictures. I can see the change every
week in the colors. This is a beautiful time of year.
I
think that the tomatoes that I had given to me are now all put up.
The next item on my list is getting all of my jars lugged down to the
cellar and finding a place to put them.
I
have been in contact with some distantly cousins via messaging on
line through Facebook and other sites. I need to connect with them
when I am not quite as busy as I am. One wanted to know if the
Worcester Reunion was the same Worcester’s that her father Fred
Harmon was from. It is always nice to see that the younger generation
is interested in their family history.
Hurricane
Matthew was a bad one in the southern states, I was glad that
Facebook put out a Safety Check page for folks to check on their
friends and family and they responded that they were safe. In the
years before Facebook we would rely on our phone to check up on them
if you could get through.
On
Saturday October 8, Carrol and I traveled to Exeter to check out the
new bunk house being built for the younger upcoming hunters. It was a
great day to also see the colors of the foliage to and from there. On
Sunday we or rather I have been recharging my batteries for another
busy week coming up. I do have to have some down time once in a
while.
We
have been seeing a lot of geese in local fields gathering up for
their flight south for the winter. It seems to be more than usual
this year.
I
am not sure about what the deer are doing showing themselves because
they know we can’t touch them and then when the hunting season
starts they hide from us. There are so many of them you have to be
careful while driving that they don’t jump out in front of you. The
bucks will be hiding definitely on the first day of hunting season. I
believe we need a doe season to weed out this huge problem in our
area.
Then
again we have the flocks of turkeys running all over us. I don’t
understand why we can’t hunt them all the time; they are a nuisance
getting into the gardens and orchards. Some of the ones that are
around here would make a good Turkey dinner about now. But alas we
are not in a district that allows hunting turkeys at all. I also
believe this district needs a fall hunting season on turkeys.
We
need to send get well wishes to Sally Cooper, Joan Ramsay, and Fred
Crowley.

On
Tuesday October 11 thirteen professional drivers of SAD 37 attended
an all-day training workshop at Narraguagus High School with Denny
Coughlin, President of the School Bus Driver Training Co. of Park
Rapids, Minnesota. Denny traveled over 2000 miles to come and train
the bus drivers of our district. The classes that we took were:
1. Secret to Happiness “Luckiest Man Alive” 2. What to Do After a
Crash, 3. Bus Evacuation Drills, 4. Smoke on a Bus, 5. Keys of
Driving 6. Resolving Conflict/Diversity, and 7. Expectations of
Terrorism
One
activity Smoke on the Bus, we had to go outside to find a doll that
was hidden under a seat on a smoked filled bus. This was difficult as
you could not see through the smoke and needed to find the doll in
the least amount of time. I was the second one to try and did find
the doll. This was a scary situation even thou I knew it was not real
and I hopefully will never have to do this in a real life situation.
Cherryfield
Congregational Church had their last supper Wednesday night with a
full house. The delicious turkey dinner and homemade pies were
excellent. I got to sit at the table with folks from Bass Harbor and
Cherryfield.
The
Cross Country teams of NHS traveled to Old Town on Saturday the 15.
Both the boys and girls teams came in third place.
On
Sunday afternoon I visited with Joan Ramsay for a bit. We had a good
visit and hopefully she will be out and about in the coming weeks.

This
past week I had an appointment in Bangor on Monday. While I was out
and about I got to shop at some stores that I have not been in for a
long time. Not that I bought much but it was nice for a change to go
where I wanted to go.
The
Phys. Ed Class of Narraguagus has been hiking at Pigeon Hill, in
Steuben, Little Tunk Mt. in Cherryfield and Frank E. Woodworth
Preserve in Harrington. The weather has been great for the students
to get out and hike this past week.
On
Wednesday Carroll and I went to Gouldsboro for his appointment. It
was a great day to get him out of the house.
Hunting
season has begun; everyone needs to be wearing their orange while
outside even if they don’t hunt. Especially the ones like me that
have white hair.
Be
careful hunting as there are people out in the woods picking brush
now to make their Christmas wreaths.
On
Saturday after getting my Marafax beans into the oven for our meal
that evening, we traveled to Ellsworth for a few items. On our way
home we traveled up and over the barrens heater hunting for a deer.
Alas all we saw were geese, ducks and other heater hunters riding
around. On returning home I got my husband in the house than I went
for sit down out back hoping one of those deer would make an
appearance to me. No such luck but I did enjoy the stillness and
listening to the birds that flew quite close to me. An hour of peace
and quiet in the woods energized my soul. Next time I will take
something to sit on….that peaked rock was not comfortable at all
but the bake beans were delicious when I got back.
I
have been catching up on some reading which I love to do when I have
a bit of time. One of the books that I am reading now is The
Mayflower and the Pilgrim’s’ New World
by Nathaniel Philbrick. A nonfiction story of the Mayflower,
how
the Pilgrims sailed to the New World from Holland in search of
religious freedom in 1620.
This
is a must for your library collection of history and especially if
you are a Mayflower descendant on how our forefathers survived their
first few years here in the new land.
I
actually have a framed copy of the original Compact of the Pilgrims
dated and sign Nov 11th
1620 that I found at a yard sale that is written about in this book.
On
another note I will be so glad when this election is over, maybe the
phone will stop ringing and the TV ads will stop and all of the
political signs will be gone from the side of the roads.

Carroll
and I went heater hunting on Friday we checked out Addison and
Harrington before starting our journey on the back roads of the
barrens. We traveled over 100 miles and only saw doe deer in Addison
and none on the journey on the barrens. We stopped at the Airline
Snack Shack for lunch before continuing our hunting the rest of the
day. We traveled to places of unknown to us but did find our way out
to Route 9. It was a long day and the scenery in some places was
awesome with the red colors on the blueberry barrens.
I
was able to get to two craft fairs this weekend and I know that every
weekend coming up will be more to go to and check out what they have
to offer.
On
Saturday twenty one members attended the Daughters of the American
Revolution Hannah Weston Chapter meeting at the Bluebird Restaurant
in Machias.
Our
newest member Arlene Hutnik of Jonesport was welcomed by the Hannah
Weston Chapter. Her ancestor was Samuel Mershon of New Jersey.
Our
guest speaker for the day was 97 year old, Edward Browne a World War
11 Army Corps POW veteran. He was a Prisoner of War for ten months in
Germany.
He
was born in New York, went to schools in New Jersey before joining
the Army Corps. After returning home he moved to Alaska working for
the Bureau of Land Management and later worked in the lumbering
industry. In 1989 He and his wife Margaret moved to Eastport and then
settled in the Town of Dennysville where he became involved in the
community. He was involved in the Congregational Church as a Trustee
and greeter, a Boy Scout Leader, a board member of the Dennysville
Historical Society and currently a member of the Senior Program at
the University of Maine. He resides at the Veterans Home in Machias.
Photo:
of Edward Browne
Edward
K Browne was born in New York on June 25, 1919 to Harriet and Edward
K Brown Sr., he had 3 siblings, John, William and Bertha. Edward
attended schools in New Jersey and after graduating from high school
he joined the United States Army in1942. After his years for the
service of his country the family moved to Alaska where he worked for
the Bureau of Land Management and later worked in the lumbering
industry. In 1989 Edward and his wife Margaret moved to Eastport and
then later settled in the Town of Dennysville, Maine where and became
very involved in the Congregational Church as a Trustee and greeter.
Mr. Browne is very community minded, serving on the board of the
Dennysville Historical Society, as a Boy Scout Leader and currently a
member of the Senior Program at the University of Maine. Mr. Browne
currently resides at the Veterans Home in Machias.
In
February 1942 he received the invitation to join the service. He
wanted the ground forces but they put him in the Army Air Corps.
He
spoke about his service and that he was a Prisoner of War for ten
months. He wanted us to know that the Germans did treat them well as
long as they obeyed the rules. In the Concentration Camp they were
able to hike around the perimeter and played baseball.
They
were able to read two newspapers that came in to the camp to find out
the progress of the war.
When
they left the camp and were out on the road marching, he said it was
not to bad going because they had oxen soup and potatoes and whatever
else that was offered.
He
told us that when the Russians broke through and put them loose the
Germans fled to the West. This was wonderful news for them as they
got sent to the heart of France first and then sent onto the states
where they reached New York Harbor as free people once more,
He
said several times that he wanted us to know that the Germans treated
them good while he was there.
Later
on him and his wife Margaret went back to Germany for a visit a
couple of years later.

Congratulations
to Zac Strout of Harrington on getting his deer for this year, a lot
of locals have been also tagging some nice bucks they have shot
around this area. I have noticed that there are usually at least four
hanging every day at the butcher shop to be processed as I drive by.
Condolences
go out to the family of Reed Holmes of Jonesport and Massachusetts on
his passing.
I
as well as others have been making mincemeat lately to use up some of
the extra meat from their deer. I had a lot of apples put by in the
freezer, but have now use them up just for this project.
The
wreathing season is in full swing with everyone making wreaths for
their orders. I stopped by the Peterson’s in Harrington and they
are making extra-large wreaths this year to fill an order.
I
visited with Huddy Peterson on Wednesday morning November 16,
while I was out and about doing errands in Harrington and Milbridge.
Later that evening I had to return to pick up some crabs that her
husband brought in for me. Now I can keep my husband busy doing
something during the day and we did enjoy have crabmeat rolls for
lunch the next day.
The
Phys Ed class hiked at Petit Manan and Sprague Falls on Tuesday. They
will be finishing up this next week with the hiking part as far as I
know.
I
will be trying to work on getting my wood in and piled before the
weather takes a turn for the worse. Hopefully this coming week I will
have some good weather to work on that.
All
of the schools had half days on the 17 and 18 for teacher conferences
with the parents on their little children.
Thanksgiving
will be here and with that we know we will have that turkey dinner
with all of the fixings that goes with it.
I
did remember to get out my Thanksgiving cards to the little ones on
my list; hopefully they will get to their destination in time for the
holiday.
Happy
Thanksgiving to all.

The
Phys Ed Class on Tuesday hiked around the ponds at Tunk Mountain and
that finished them up on their hiking days.
Carroll
and I traveled to Machias and had our Thanksgiving dinner at the
Bluebird Restaurant. We enjoyed chatting with the two ladies from
Lubec that joined us at our table. We saw several folks that we knew
from Addison that also had their meal there. We enjoyed getting out
and socializing with others on Turkey Day.
Every
weekend there are craft fairs for all of us to go to. So far I have
made most of them in the area. This past weekend Steuben had theirs,
I also attended the one at the Steuben Library where I found a couple
of items I needed.
Next
weekend the 3rd
there are so many events that I want to go to, I think if I can plan
my time I just might hit most of them.
Condolences
go out to the family of Alfred Look of Columbia and Judy Redimarker
of Addison; they will be missed by their friends and family.
Get
well wishes to all the folks that have medical problems they are
dealing with.
While
I was out to the craft fairs on Friday I took a ride to Unionville to
the Smith Cemetery to look up one of my ancestors. Job and Diadama
Smith are buried in this little cemetery close to the road. I took
some photos of the cemetery to put with my information that I have.
On
Saturday evening many local residents, friends and family gathered at
the Columbia Falls Union Hall for the annual holiday tree lighting
and social. Activities for the children, Santa Claus and Christmas
sing along, along with a number of raffles were part of the event.
Refreshments were served with hot chocolate and hot cider. A good
time was had by all.
On
Sunday evening Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout, and Michele and
David McLaughlin all from Harrington came to our house to have our
Thanksgiving meal. As usual everything was delicious, including the
taco salad and desserts that they brought. We now have left overs
that we so enjoy after a meal like this.

Out and About
I finally got my tree made with fresh
brush and another one already sent and received by my grandchildren
in Boston. I now need to find my decorations and get it ready for the
season. It seems that I work all month to decorate for the Christmas
season and then it’s over. I always leave my decorations up a lot
longer to enjoy them longer; hopefully I will get my collection of
Santa Clauses up before the week is out.
Hunting season is now over for another year. I just wish they would
have a season on does where there are so many around here.
On Friday evening Joan Ramsay and I enjoyed seeing the Christmas tree
displays at the American Legion Hall in Cherryfield. Afterwards we
took a ride through Milbridge to see the Christmas light displays.
Saturday my agenda was to do everything on my list, which was to go
to the craft fair at the Rose Gafftney School in Machias and then
onto the Talbot House for our DAR Christmas Tea and meeting.
Many folks turned out to the craft fair on Saturday and I saw quite a
few folks that I knew there I found a couple of items that I
thought I needed, but mostly I took tickets on items that were being
raffled off and went on my way. I did not hear from anyone so I guess
I did not get the prize.
Twenty four members of the Hannah Weston Chapter of the Daughters of
the American Revolution attended the Christmas Tea at the Talbot
House in East Machias, Maine on Saturday December 3. Our
regent Mary-Alice Look had a short meeting before we were served. I
really enjoyed sitting at the same table to chat with Roberta Hammond
and Arlene Hutnik during our luncheon.
After the Tea I made a trip to Milbridge to see the trees at the
Schooner Gallery that were being ticked off. I took a few tickets
after checking them all over. I did not expect to win anything but by
the time I got home I got the call that I won one of the trees the
Religions Around the World for Children that also came with three
books made for children. A cute idea and I love it with the lights on
it. So the day ended quite well I must say.
I decided that I might try and attend two more Teas that were on
Sunday, so my first stop was at the Ruggles House in Columbia Falls.
A good amount of people were coming and going after they sample the
goodies there and had a spot of tea or mulled cider. The Cole Creek
band played Christmas music on the second floor landing. This is a
good way to get in the mood for the holidays. Larry Smith met
everyone that arrived at the door. Richard Grant and Charlie Herr
held down the kitchen section when I was there. I got to say hello to
my cousin Mary and her husband Arthur Alley that were there before I
left. Many other folks that came through were having a tour of the
house which was all decorated up with greenery on the mental places
and over the doors. This was a lovely way to spend the afternoon
socializing.
My next adventure led me to the Machiasport Historical Society
Christmas Tea at the Gates House. A four piece band with Ruth Ahrens
on organ, Jim Sherman on guitar, Merrill Colbert on harmonica, and
Barbara Letham on cello, were playing Christmas carols during the
Tea. This was definitely the way to spend a Sunday afternoon
socializing. I of course only knew a few folks but chatted with
others that I did not know. I would like to get a chance to get back
there when they open up again in the spring to do some genealogy work
as they have quite a few families of that local area in their
upstairs room.
Congratulations to my nephew Quintin and his wife Toni Worcester on
the birth of their son Orion Kay Worcester born Dec 2, 2016 he
weighed 8 lbs and was 20.5 inches. Orion has a big sister Artemis.
Condolences go out to the family of Richard
Farnsworth Sr of Columbia Falls. They will miss him very much.

Changing Tides Open House and Tea
I have not heard of anything
for upcoming events this coming week. So I guess I have a free
weekend coming up to get my shopping done and maybe my Christmas
cards mailed out.
I attended the Wesley’s Tree
Festival in East Machias Saturday afternoon, there were some nice
trees being raffled off. A lot of folks were coming and
going to it. I hope they had a good turnout for it.
On my way home I headed to
Harrington for the open house and Christmas Tea at the Changing Tides
Home. There again folks were coming and going while I was there.
Carroll and I attended the
supper Saturday evening at the Addison Town Hall for all Senior
citizens of Addison. The meal was put on by the Addison Volunteer
Fire Dept. Auxiliary. This was the 34th
year that it has been done for the citizens.
The oldest folks that
attended were Charlene Magby at 94 and Cecil Rockwell at 88 years
old.
Dickey and Rose Marie Norton
were celebrating their 56 wedding anniversary by attending this
social event.
The weather was good so a lot
of the folks were able to get out and enjoy the meal. Gifts were
exchanged and calendars and mints were handed out by the Auxiliary.
Bob and Kathy Pounder
celebrated their 40th
Wedding Anniversary Saturday evening with a gathering at the Town
Hall in Columbia.
Last week we had our grandson
Konner Strout spend three nights with us while his parents were busy
doing their thing.
On Wednesday December 7 I drove
the Math Team of Narraguagus to Calais.
Thursday and Friday evening I
attended the Eastern Star meetings in Milbridge and Addison. These
were our last meetings till March 2017 when we will start back up.
On Sunday I finished up making
three more table- top Christmas trees and then cleaned up the brush
mess that was left behind. A good chore done before the storm comes
on Monday.
Sherri Paul and I drove to
Milbridge to watch the Wreaths Across America Convoy go thru on their
way to Arlington Sunday morning.
Keep
Fred Crowley, Joan Ramsay and all the others that are having health
issues in your prayers.

We had our first snow date on
December 12, 2016 for this school year. Hopefully we won’t lose
many days this year.
The bus drivers held their
Christmas Party at the home of Lori Mathews in Cherryfield on
December 12 in the morning. Those that made it out were: Al &
Mary Moore, Dawn McManus, Darlene Stubbs, Pat Thaxter, Ronie Strout,
and Clara Ann Redimarker.
Afterwards I visited with Bunny
Plummer and then stopped in to check out The Good Old Days in
Cherryfield before I returned home.
Get well wishes to Al Moore and
Joan Ramsay and all the others that are under the weather. mvno
Tuesday the 13, I was one of
the drivers that took students from NHS to the Penobscot Theater in
Bangor for the day.
The Narraguagus girls traveled
to Blue Hill on Thursday evening to play ball. The weather was cold
and the roads were good to travel to and from that night.
The students in the district
had their Christmas Fairs on Friday where they can buy gifts for
their families.
I finally got my Christmas
cards done over the weekend. For a snowy day that was a good job
done. On Saturday before the snow storm came I did some shopping at
the local hardware store to fill in on some gifts that I needed.
My doorways are filling up with
the cards that we have received; I love this for part of my
decorations for the holidays.
Christmas School vacation is
coming up on the 22nd
and they will return to school on Monday January 2, 2017.

December 23, 2016
On Monday evening the
Harrington Elementary had their Christmas Concert. I do enjoy going
to see the students sing, they are so cute and all dressed up for the
concert.
School is out now for the
Christmas break and we go back on January 2, 2017.
Everyone is out and about
doing their last minute shopping for the big day on Sunday. We have
finished up ours by hitting the local stores in the area. I did not
find any time to make a trip to Ellsworth due to my schedule so
decided on getting what I needed here.
Hopefully the weather will be
good while we are on break so I can get some visiting done and some
items taken care of here on the home front.
The deer have been out feeding as well as the
turkeys here on the Ridge.
As of this writing I have seen that a lot of
Christmas Eve services are being held with the local churches. It is
hard for me to attend as we have a gathering on Christmas Eve at our
house with the big meal on Sunday with the children.
Get well wishes to Fred
Crowley, Regina Jordan, Al Moore, Lisa Mutty, Patsy Green and Joan
Ramsay and all the others that are dealing with major illnesses.
My niece Regina Ramsdell Jordan
formerly of Columbia, is going through this journey of breast cancer,
I know cards of prayers, hopes and thinking of you would be greatly
appreciated at this time. Her address is Regina Jordan 193 A 3rd
Street, Bangor, Maine 04401 and she has a page on Facebook called My
Journey: My Fight With Breast Cancer that you can follow. Let’s
cheer her up during this trying time.
We have been enjoying watching
the birds at our bird feeders; my husband has seen the cardinals a
few times along with the other little birds
Birthdays in our family this
coming week include Molly Strout the 23, Steve Plummer the 24,
Michelle McLaughlin the 25, Bunny Plummer the 26, Danielle Plummer 27

We have news to share: Our
grandson Gavin Ulku Strout was born on Tuesday, December 27, 2016 in
Reno, Nevada to Zebadiah & Molly Strout. Gavin weighed in at 7
lbs 14 oz and is 19 ¼ long.
He is welcomed into the family
by his big brother Oliver.
On December 22, 2016 Buddy
Mills and I drove the NHS teams to the Cross Center in Bangor for a
game with Orono and Sumner High Schools. I left Harrington at 5:30
a.m. for the early morning game at 8 a.m. It was definitely a long
day for me. Later after I arrived home I made it to my daughter’s
birthday party in Harrington. A good way to unwound from the bus
trip. We were celebrating Michelle McLaughlin’s birthday two days
before as she was born on Christmas many years ago.
On Saturday afternoon I along
with 35 or so folks gathered for the Christmas Eve service held at
the Balsam Valley Chapel in Jonesboro.
John Linnehan of Ellsworth gave
a nice sermon and his wife Heather along with Stan Wilbur Jr and
Sharon Beal on piano provided music. This little chapel is really
quite unique and well worth the ride out to check it out.
On Christmas Eve Michelle and
David McLaughlin, Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout joined us for a
seafood stew. Then on Christmas evening they joined us for our
Christmas supper. We missed not having the other three children and
their families with us.
My son Matthew messaged me on
December 28 that his ship was in the middle of a typhoon and being
tossed around like a rag doll. I finally got a message on December 29
that it had quieted down and all was well, they made it through.
Thank goodness and he is hoping to get back to the states in the
New Year around the 4th.
On Wednesday December 28,
Jesse Washburn and family arrived for a visit with us. Asa and Mabel
enjoyed have Christmas again at our house. Asa had the chance to play
with his cousin Konner while here and also seeing his aunts, Michelle
and Tiffany. We wish they could of spent a little longer with us but
they had other things to do while in Maine. Hopefully next summer
they can visit longer once Asa is out of school. Just maybe I will
get the chance to visit them during February vacation.
Get well wishes and thinking
of you in your time of need goes out to Fred Crowley, Carol Coffin,
Patsy Green, Michael Haire, Regina Jordan, Lisa Mutty, Joan Ramsay,
and Molly Woodsum.
If you know of someone that
needs get well wishes sent to them please let me know.
Birthday being celebrated in
the coming days are: Caleb Paul on January 4, Sarah Hurlbert on
January 5, Zachary Strout on January 6, Helena Worcester on January
7, and Cody Davis on January 11.

The
Union Hall in Columbia Falls was the scene of a Holiday program on
Saturday November 26 for the local residents. The tree lighting at
the Salmon Hatchery took place at 6 p.m. before the activities at the
hall commenced.
Inside
the hall was decorated with a Christmas village in front of the stage
that was decorated for Santa to meet with the children. On four
tables activities were sat up for children to make while they were
there. Even some adults enjoyed making them with their children as
well.
Refreshments
were served along with hot chocolate and hot cider served by Roberta
Hammond.
A
Chinese auction was in one corner of the hall with lots of great
items to win. A couple of the children helped with the drawing and
delivering the items to their winners.
Christmas
Carols were sung with Gary Magby of Addison on keyboard.
Santa
Claus gave
out
an ornament to all that visited with him.
