May 6, 2012

Out and About May 6, 2012 Condolences to the Kelley Church family of Columbia, she was involved with many community activities in Columbia as well as at the DW Merritt School in Addison where her two daughters attended. A benefit spaghetti supper will be held for the Church family, Friday May 18, 2012 at 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Columbia Town Hall, Columbia, Maine. This supper is sponsored by the DW Merritt Parent Support Group, Girl Scout Troop 380 and the Cub Scout Pack 137. If you would like to make donations or volunteer for the supper contact Donna Haire at 598-5953 or Debbie Lovejoy at 483-9731. On Wednesday Michelle McLaughlin and I were in Portland for a doctor’s appointment, it made a long day for the both of us. Then on Saturday Carroll and I were shopping in Bangor and Ellsworth another long day for me. Lori Mathew of Milbridge held a Pampered Chef party on Sunday afternoon at her home on the Kansas Road. As usual the items that were made for us to taste were delicious. Afterwards I delivered some dandelions to Bonnie Sproul in Cherryfield that I had freshly picked for her. T-Ball has started up for our grandson Konner Strout; his first game will be this coming Wednesday. It seems like yesterday that we were doing the same thing for his father. Condolences go out to the family of Dana Kennedy of Harrington and get well wishes go out to Sherrill Redimarker of Addison, Alfred Moore and Fred Prince of Columbia Falls. This week I received a packet in the mail from a fellow genealogist, with pictures of folks from the Addison area we think. These photos are connected to the Merritt, Hinckley, Preble, MacFarland families of Pleasant River area. In the packet was an articled of Alonzo H. Merritt death and of Captain Elmer E. MacFarland and a marriage announcement of Miss Louise Rebecca Burns to Mr. Warren Hinckley Preble on 29 Oct 1920. I found a picture of Etta and Clifton MacFarland and one of Alfred and Laura Davis on their fiftieth wedding anniversary in 1912. Only one photo in the packet was unidentified. I found information on Alonzo H. Merritt son of Albert Merritt and Frances Helen Ames, and he had two sisters Elizabeth who married a Davis and Frances M. who married first Daniel Schoppe Thompson and second George T. Kitching. I see that he married Caroline and had two daughters Esther and Anne Merritt. I have no further info on them. The info on Captain Elmer E. MacFarland says he married Jennie Cavanaugh and was survived by nephew Capt. Waldo Merritt. I found no information on Alfred and Laura Davis. If anyone would like to see this packet, give me a call.

April 29, 2012 Lady Gertrude has arrived and is sitting on her nest here in Addison and I have noticed that there are several other Canadian geese nesting on the salt marsh.. A student on my bus said that she saw two eggs in Lady Gertrude’s nest. The students have been worried what with all of the rain that she might get cold or flooded out of her nest. Every day as we travel by in the bus they check her out. I attended a meeting Tuesday evening for the 150 celebration of Columbia Falls and learned that there will be a parade, fireworks, a contra dance/ball, and many more activities next year 2013 for this celebration. They have a long ways to go to get it all organized. I am sure if anyone has ideas or an interest to help them out they would be grateful. Many hands make light work. A reminder to everyone that returnable bottles and cans may be taken to Delia’s’ Branch Grocery and credited to the Columbia Falls 150 Celebration. They also will have on sale May 5th between 2-4 pm at the Former Community Room / Fire Station Student desks and chairs from the Columbia Falls Elementary. The cost is $10.00 a set. The proceeds will be used to support the Columbia Falls 150 Anniversary Celebration June 28-June 30 2013. There will be a local Pee Wee 3rd & 4th girl’s & boy’s basketball tournament this coming weekend May 4th & 5th at the D.W. Merritt school gym to benefit the celebration. This should be a good time for all participants. When I took my grandson Konner to his nursery school I was able to dig a huge box of dandelions there. On my way home I delivered several messes of them to five older folks that were unable to dig any for themselves, plus I got to visit with them a bit. I did keep enough for myself for several meals. While I was out and about digging these greens I picked a bouquet of daffodils for my home and found some May flowers all in blossom. I remember that my dad always picked my mom some May flowers as they were the first flowers in the spring to be found. I received an email from a distant relative this week with a photo of my husband’s great grandmother Rebecca Ann Beal Church; she was married to George Mifflin Dallas Church of Jonesport. I do so love to get photos and more information on our ancestors. Thursday evening Cathy Fonda and I attended the Jonesport Historical Society meeting at the Peabody Memorial Library. I would say over thirty folks attended this meeting on the three churches that are celebrating an anniversary this year. The Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church is 125 years old, the Jonesport Wesleyan Church is 100 years old, and the Community of Christ Church is celebrating 100 years at the site of its current church. A representative from each church spoke on their church history along with a picture slide show. Get well wishes go out to Al Moore and Fred Prince of Columbia Falls, Jack Baquinha of Texas and Justin Thompson of Addison.
April 22, 2012 Maynard Tucker with his great grand nephew Konner Strout Hula hoop contestants Maynard & Wesley Tucker of Baldwinville, MA was here on Sunday April 15 visiting with family. He visited with us, Ruberta Plummer, Charlene and Ronald Gray, and then stopped over Monday evening in Augusta to visit his sister Susie Brewer on his way back home. We are so glad that his son was able to take the time and bring him to Maine for this visit. Maynard turned 90 this year and I was happy to get a photo of him and my grandson together. I almost missed seeing them as I was on my way out to drive my daughter home to Boston that day. Diadem and I arrived at her place at 4 in the afternoon. We both were tired after the long day of driving. Molly Uklu arrived shortly after us to stay overnight. On Monday the temperature in Boston was close to 100 degrees. It was quite a change in the temperature for us. We did get out but only to take a walk in the park and then for an ice cream before we returned home to watch movies. Molly left early in the morning to go to New York to pick up my son Zebadiah Strout as he had arrived from his ship in the morning. When they arrived back at Diadem’s we all went out for a lovely meal. On Tuesday morning Zebadiah, Molly and I headed for Maine after doing several errands. We arrived in Addison just in time for a meal prepared by Carroll Strout. Of course we called ahead and asked if he could whip something up for us. The four nights that Molly and Zebadiah were here we held family gatherings as they left on Saturday morning for Minneapolis and they drove through to arrive at her home Sunday afternoon. Zebadiah will be flying out to Hawaii on Wednesday hopefully for a job that will be available for him. On Saturday the professional drivers of SAD #37 held a karaoke/fun day at Milbridge Elementary. Students from the local schools that attended had a great time with the activities. School vacation is now over, the week went just too fast for me and now I think I need a vacation from the vacation. I know the parents will be glad their youngsters will be back in school this week. Heard this week that both Barbara and Irving Plummer of Zephyrhills, Florida formally of Addison are not well, they both could use some prayers sent their way. Glen Crowley of Columbia is home from the hospital. Get well wishes go out to Loyce & Paul Worcester, Al Moore and Fred Prince of Columbia Falls
April 14, 2012 Grace Peterson with the Boston Post Cane The Town of Columbia on March 19, 2012 held their 216th town meeting. Joseph Tibbetts was elected as the Moderator for the evening. Chester Grant was the only one that ran against Mark Howe who was reelected as Selectman for a three year term. Mary Ann Nichols was reelected as Administrative Assistant, Brandon Lovejoy was reelected as Road Commissioner for the ensuing year and Lisa Norton was reelected as SAD #37 Director for a three-year term. The town had 49 Articles to vote on with all but one that was tabled. The meeting was short and two the point with only two Articles that had some discussion on them. During the intermission, Grace Peterson was presented flowers, a certificate & the Boston Post Cane in honor of being the oldest person in Columbia at the age of 93 years old. The Professional Driving Team of SAD#37 will be hosting a KARAOKE/FUN DAY at Milbridge Elementary for ALL the students in our district (grades 3-8) on Saturday April 21, 2012 from 10am-2pm. We will be having karaoke, knockout, half court shots, hula hoop, & limbo contests. Prizes awarded. Also a door prize and a bike raffle. FREE ADMISSION. Contests are $1.00 each to enter and refreshments will be sold. Hope to see LOTS of students there! Friends and family gathered at the Strout’s home on Addison Ridge for a baby shower for Diadem Washburn. Games were played, gifts opened, onesie decorated and hung by the bay windows. Guests wrote down what they thought the baby might be, guessing the weight, length and name. One of the unusual items at the shower was a belly band that was used probably 100 years ago that I used as a guessing game. Refreshments were a beautiful cake in the shape of a baby bottle made by Michelle McLaughlin sister of the mother- to- be. Sandwiches, chips & dips, pickles & cheese were all delicious. Those that attended the shower were: Ashley Smith, Old Town, Jenny Tuttle, Bangor, Michelle McLaughlin, Tiffany & Konner Strout, Ruberta Plummer, Harrington, Abby Plummer, Jonesboro, Dotty Caldwell, Jane Crosen, Penobscot, Ronie Strout, Addison, Maine & Molly Uklu, Minnetonka, Mn. At our Eastern STAR Alcyone Chapter #71 meeting Thursday evening we had the pleasure of Worthy Grand Patron John Cousins of Darmiscotta in attendance. This was our first meeting for the year 2012-2013 with twenty two in attendance. Rest of the news: Well, because I had the shower at my house it got me up and going to clean, clean, purge and more sorting. But the bad news is there is still more to be done. But I must say it all looks great in the down stairs rooms. I will be heading for Boston with my daughter to help with driving her back, then catch a ride back home with my son Zebadiah that will be getting off his ship in NY Monday. So I will not have much time in the City visiting with my daughter. It was great seeing her, and we are now awaiting the arrival of the little one in May. Carroll's Uncle Maynard and son Wesley Tucker are coming to visit on Sunday, and probably I will be already gone with my daughter as we will be leaving early. Can't be help I guess. School vacation is this coming week so I don’t have to think about driving the bus which is good. Hopefully the weather will start and warm up a bit so that we will enjoy getting out and about more if the price of the gas would be cheaper. It was $4.02 at Irvings in Harrington today. Catch you all later, have a great week. Ronie
April 8, 2012 Saturday afternoon the Order of the Eastern Star Milbridge Alcyone Chapter #71 installed their new officers for the insuring year and in the evening Jonesport Rumery Chapter #46 installed theirs. At both of the installations were folks from: Presque Isle Lunar Chapter #126, Bangor Tuscan Chapter #148, Guilford Almeda Chapter # 149, Lake View Chapter #179, Machias Chapter # 83, and Ellsworth Irene Chapter #97 are ones that I can remember that were there. The side lines were full at both of the Chapters. Michelle and David McLaughlin, and Zachary, Tiffany and Konner Strout all from Harrington were at our table for our Easter dinner. Konner told us he had been to quite a few birthday parties lately and several Easter egg hunts. Next week Konner registers for kindergarten at the Harrington Elementary School. Get well wishes to Glendon Crowley of Columbia and Jack Barquinha of Texas. Be on the watch out for a golden eagle that has been sighted over the river in Columbia Falls. They are very unusual for our area. On April 5th a dolphin was stranded on the banks of the river, a call went out to the College of Atlantic staff. They had hopes that they could have saved the dolphin but it died in route to the Allied Whale Lab. Check at your local town office to see when the rabies clinics will be held for your town. There will be one on April 14 for Columbia Falls from 11-12. The Downeast Salmon Federation Annual Smelt Fry will be happening April 20, 2012 5-9pm at the Columbia Falls Fire Department and Wild Salmon Resource Center in Columbia Falls. Pleasant River Fish & Game Conservation Association will be having a Appleseed Rifle Marksmanship & Heritage Clinic on Saturday & Sunday April 21 & 22 at the clubhouse in Columbia. They also will be having a NRA Basic Handgun Course on Saturday April 28 at the clubhouse. This course is accepted by the Maine State Police for issuing concealed carry permits. There is a fee of $95 for the course. Contact Wayne 963-2163 if you’re interested.
April 1, 2012 Saturday the Destination Imagination teams from Harrington and Addison traveled to Orono for the State Competition. Harrington’s team came in first place by default as they were the only one that competed in their division. Even so they all did a great job on their division anyway. Saturday the band members of SAD #37 were in Woodland for their spring concert. This was an all day of practice with other schools in Washington County ending with the concert in the evening. Congratulations to the winners of Downeast Idol that took place Saturday evening at Narraguagus High School. I was unable to attend but heard that all of the performers did a great job. The following are the winners in the Younger Division: 1st--Will Somes, 2nd--Elexis Dubose, and 3rd--Mystie McManus. In the Adult Division they were: 1st--Kyle Stanley, 2nd--Alora Felix, and 3rd--Dayna Smith. Peter Sawyer and Judy Sprague were our dinner guests Sunday evening. Judy has been here visiting Peter for a few weeks and will be returning to her home in Texas on Friday. All genealogists are looking forward to getting into the 1940 U.S. Federal Census that will be open to the public as of April 2, 2012. This will give genealogist a chance to find out more information on their families they are researching. The programs Who Do You Think You Are and Finding Your Roots seem to be a hit with most folks. I myself enjoy watching them. It looks so easy the way these famous folks get to find out about their ancestors, but us down to earth folks know that it is not quite that easy. We do our own research the hard way. Good news that Jack Barquinha of Plano, Texas formerly of Columbia has returned to his home following a stay in the hospital and rehab center. Get well cards would be welcome; his address is 7100 Chase Oaks Blvd, Apt 4204, Plano, Texas 75025. Maple syrup season is now over for the year, it was not a good year due to the weather but I have all that I need put away in my cellar for my use. Now I must wait for dandelion season to come, which could be early this year if we can get some more warm weather. We have turned our coal stove off for the winter hoping the weather will continue to warm up. I have started in on my spring cleaning and getting rid of all of that winter dust is a chore. I am plugging along one day at a time in hopes that it will soon be done before I need to be outside cleaning up from the winter season. Get well wishes go out to Al Moore of Columbia Falls, hopefully he will be on the mend and back to driving the bus soon.
March 25, 2012 On Thursday evening fifteen members attended the Jonesport Historical Society first meeting for the season at the Peabody Memorial Library. President Don Woodward spoke on the ongoing restoration of the Sawyer Building that will house the artifacts that they have collected. Almost 100 photos were shown on the before and after work on what has already been done to restore this building. When all is said and done this building will have an artifact room, a meeting room to hold our meetings and a computer room where the society has three data bases: one data base each for genealogy, cemeteries, and artifacts for all to use in any type of research. John Vassar Sawyer, II donated to the Jonesport Historical Society many items that have been in the building since the 1800’s. As soon as the renovations are completed and given the time of their volunteers everything will be inventoried, scanned and documented and put into their archives data base. Many, many volunteer man hours have already gone into this building to ready it for the open house in late June. The dedication of Barbara & Bill Plaskon, Andy & Arlene Hutnik, Steven Perry and Don Woodward will be definitely seen along with others that have help in one way or another to make it all possible. These folks that are working their hearts off to save this history for us are really special folks and we all should let them know that we appreciate their time and energy. Stop by and lend a hand or encouragement to them the next time you happen by the Sawyer Building. If you have not been to one of their meetings you have missed out on a lot of our history of the area. This is not just Jonesport history it is all of ours as we all have ancestors that come from Beals Island, Jonesport, Head Harbor Island and the surrounding areas that were in the sea faring. All meetings are held on the fourth Thursdays of the month from March to October starting at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments are served after the meeting. The April meeting will be on the Three Churches Celebrating Anniversaries in Jonesport by church officials. On Saturday evening I spent the evening with friends in Bangor enjoying dinner out and then we all attended, the 7th Annual Performance at Peakes Auditorium at the Bangor High School, Music Off Broadway Music from the Movies presented by Rotary Club of Bangor, Maine. I was pleased to find that I actually knew someone in this. Ben Layman formerly of Columbia Falls sang two numbers. A great evening out on the town followed by attending the Maple Syrup Sunday gathering at the Trott’s camp in Exeter, Maine. On March 25 over 60 friends gathered at the Trott’s Camp in Exeter for their annual Maple Syrup Sunday spring gathering with a pot luck lunch consisted of bake beans, yeast rolls, cole slaw, Caesar salad, dump can turkey, spare ribs, French fries, maple candy, homemade chocolate & maple ice-cream, blueberry pie, mincemeat squares & pumpkin bars. Attending from Washington County were Zachary, Tiffany & Konner Strout of Harrington, Ronie & Carroll Strout of Addison & Jonathan & Daniele Plummer of East Machias.. We all enjoyed the food, company and conversations and best of all brought home freshly made Maple Syrup
March 18, 2012 Just found a day book that my grandmother Ronie gave to her future husband my grandfather Ralph Eben Worcester. On the first page it is written Oct 29, 1896 Ronie D. Leighton, Epping Maine, U.S.A. On the opposite page says Property of R. E. Worcester Columbia, Me. U.S.A. They married three years later on February 1, 1899 and he worked the logging camps a couple of years after they were married than returned to Columbia and had eight children. Ralph died 1924 from Malaria that he had contracted in Nicaragua. My grandfather kept a record when he worked in Bluefields, Nicaragua at several of the logging camps. I found that he worked in these camps No. 9, No 10. In 1894 he was at camp No. 13 which was on the Wa-Wa River then in camp No. 5 of October of 1898, and Camp No. 14 on Feb 18, 1901. The information looks like he traveled from his home in Columbia, to Ellsworth, then to Boston where he then went by steamer to New Orleans. I suppose he than got onto another steamer to get to Nicaragua. I see that in 1901 he was still in Nicaragua as he sent $50.00 home to his mother via the Chelsea Office of Geo. D. Emery. Also in this same book in the back I found a pocket with a lock of hair tied with a ribbon. I believe this was my grandmothers’ hair that she had given him along with the day book to carry with him while he was away. I do have a copy of a letter that she received from him while he was away saying he missed her very much. How sweet. I never knew them as they both passed away before I was even a twinkle in my Dad’s eyes. On another note I have a new picture that was found at the Transfer station just tossed aside of an older lady. It is so sad that folks toss out their families like this. If anyone can identify her please let me know, it has to be someone’s grandmother, aunt or sister and I would love to find out who she is. I am posting this photo onto the genealogy groups that I belong too in hopes that she will be identified. Get well wishes to Peter Sawyer of Milbridge and Corey Worcester of Columbia Falls. Happy birthday to the following folks that will be celebrating a birthday this week: March 19 -Lorraine Whary Thompson, Hulda Peterson; March 22 – Wayne Merritt, Linda Alley; March 23-- Clara Driscoll; March 25 –Paula Scott, Richard Farnsworth Jr. and Charlene Gray. March 11, 2012

March 11, 2012 . The Historical Societies are beginning to start up their meetings for the season. Pleasant River Historical Society has changed their monthly meeting to the third Mondays of the months. The next one will be March 19 at Tim and Mary Thompson home in South Addison. Beals will hold their first program with a talent/variety show on April 7th at the Beals Gym starting at 6:30 PM. Town meeting time is here again. The month of March is when most of our towns have their annual Town Meetings. Some of the towns also put on their famous bake bean suppers the same evening, so that while everyone is out and about they can eat and then attend the town meeting. Addison will hold their meeting on the 13 of this week, Columbia will be on March 19, and Columbia Falls will be on March 20. Early Saturday morning Donna Tomkiewick’s home on the Webb District Road in Columbia burned. The cause of the fire could have been a light bulb being used as a heat source for some stray cats that she was taken care of. I understand that the State Fire Marshal’s Office will be investigating the fire. What a devastating loss this must be for anyone to lose a home and their animals.
Get well wishes go out to Corey Worcester who is struggling in the hospital; his parents have been by his side every day. Will Whiles is still recuperating, with Clara Driscoll by his side every day. Molly Woodsum is now home from the hospital and gaining every day.< Our sincere condolences to the family of Ansel Rockwell, 1918-2012, another cousin of mine has left us on my mother’s side of the family.
Tracey & Mike Peterson have moved their family to a home on Mill Street in Harrington over the weekend. They had several friends that were able to help them move their belongings from their home in Cherryfield to this one. It is always nice to have friends to help out. I my self dropped by and helped out in putting things away in their kitchen. I also made a picture gallery in their huge hallway with most of their photos of their families. Every little bit of help will make their home homier. The children were quite excited over having their own bedrooms.
On Sunday Carroll and Zachary Strout were in Orono for the 74th Eastern Maine Sportsmen’s Show at the University in Maine. Order of the Eastern Star Alcyone Chapter #71 held their first meeting of this year on Thursday evening at the Masonic Lodge in Milbridge. The pot luck supper held before the meeting was delicious. The installation ceremony of new officers will be held on Saturday April 7 in the afternoon followed by the stated meeting on April 12. All members of the Order are welcome.
Mark your calendar as I just heard that a spring Book Fair will be held on April 1st at DW Merritt School in Addison.
The Bohemian Bakery opened for the season this week and they have a new menu on sandwiches. I have tried one of them already and found it to be delicious. .

March 4th, 2012.
I just received some interesting info on the Worsters of Columbia from Valdine Atwood of Machias. She found this in the Machias Union 1876 & from Early Pleasant River Families by Leonard F. Tibbetts & Darryl B. Lamson.
THE WORSTERS OF COLUMBIA

Rev. William Worcester (1595-1662), son of an Anglican vicar, matriculated from Cambridge University in 1620. He served as Anglican vicar at Olney, Buckinghamshire, England, 1624-36, until relieved there by his Church because of his opposition to Church support for sports and recreation on Sunday, then he came in 1636 to New England where the Puritan beliefs were more in line with his own. He became the first minister at Salisbury, Mass., where he served from 1636-62 until his death. His great-great-grandson was an early settler at Pleasant River.

Moses Worster was at Columbia (Pleasant River) by 1763. He served in the Revolutionary War, first enlisting in 1775 as a private then as a sergeant in Capt. Francis Shaw’s Company and at Narraguagus and Pleasant River for the Defenses of the Seacoast. Later he enlisted in the company raised for the expedition against St. John, Nova Scotia. He was finally discharged in 1780.

He and his first wife, believed to have been Jude/Judith Norard/Norward had 12 children. They were: Moses, Jr., Mary, John, Miriam, Annie, Martha/Patty, Eunice, Joseph, Lucia, Isaac and Priscilla.

In 1770, Moses Worster, son of Moses, was born in Columbia on what is known as “Wooster’s Point”. He was the first white child born on Pleasant River. Worster’s Point is on the West side, a short distance below Columbia Falls.
The senior Moses was a soldier of the Revolution. He came from Scarboro or vicinity. He also did service in the Indian wars of an earlier date.
The sons of Moses, second, all settled at Columbia. They are: Amos, Leonard, Moses, and Aaron.
The daughters of Moses numbered eight. They are: Mary/Polly, Jude Norard, Esther, Hannah H., Miriam, Deborah, Abigail, and Louisa.
This family of twelve were all living in 1876 except Aaron and Judith N. who was the first wife of Jonathan Dorr.
Moses of the third generation lives at Saco, Columbia, and he has a son named Moses.
Leonard Worster married Lovee, daughter of the late Kinsman Corthell of Addison. Leonard and Lovee raised a family of ten children. They were all living in 1876, the youngest being thirty-two years old.
The Moses who first settled on the Point was Deacon of the Baptist church for a long term of years.
It is said of the first Moses that one time, when he had enlisted for the War, his wife followed him to the door, tossed her shoe after him as he departed saying, “Don’t get shot in the back, Moses.”
Judith N., above named, raised a family of fourteen. All but three were alive in 1876, the youngest being forty years old.
Jonathan Dorr is yet living. He was 85 years old on the 16th day of last April. In the late Civil War, he had one son, one son-in-law and three grandsons. One of his grandsons is supposed to have been killed at the same time that General Custer and his command were slain. Young Dorr was in the Indian service in Montana and latest advices indicate that he was in Custer’s command and shared the General’s fate.
I have only found one photo of Moses Jr. children that of Abigail Worcester who married Stillman Look that I received from Roberta Hammond of Columbia Falls.
How interesting this is to me as this is about my ancestors. Thanks go out to Valdine Atwood in finding this information and sharing with us all.
This first week after school vacation has been a bit trying to all of us with the new bus runs on the East end of the district, namely the Addison and Columbia Runs. The three runs that changed were Al Moore, Ronie Strout, and Fred Prince. I know I am still trying to figure out who all the students that are now riding my bus and what they look like. I am also watching them to see how they act on my bus and then assign seats to them. It is confusing somewhat as some students go certain days to babysitters and they don’t normally ride my bus. I have some students that might only ride in the morning and others that only ride at night, some notes says they are going to grandmas.
Because of all of this I will have to assign seats for all of them and also assign seats to the girl scouts that ride twice a month on the bus to their meetings. And the parents think we have it easy driving the bus with all of this going on and knowing where all of their children are going to and from and getting them there safely. So if we as bus drivers happen to forget where you think your child is suppose to go, don’t get mad at us, we are following orders from our director and will take them back to school or try and track down someone that actually knows where they are suppose to go.
On Saturday we attended the funeral of B. Conley Worcester of Southwest Harbor a relative of all of the Worcester’s here in the Pleasant River area.
Get well wishes go out to Molly Woodsum of Winterport and Addison and Corey Worcester of Columbia Falls.
Condolences go out to Muriel Hartford’s family; Muriel was over 100 years old and had been in the Jonesport Nursing Home. I will miss her; she always looked forward to spring to get the first mess of dandelions that I would dig for her. I think she looked forward in the visit as much as having the mess of dandelions.
Both Conley and Muriel held being the oldest at the Worcester Reunions for a number of years.

Now for the rest of the news:
Today decided to wash my kitchen ceiling, started to work on it at 8 a.m and finished at 4 p.m. I use to be able to do the whole kitchen in one day but alas I can’t now. I did get behind the refrigerator and stove etc to clean and put back, now have the rest of the woodwork and walls to finish. I also have to do behind the wood stove when it is not going. Hopefully I will be able to finish this within this week between bus runs.
I believe I have a part time job working at the bakery down the road so Thursdays, Fridays (between bus runs) and Saturdays will keep me busy. Or rather will fill in whenever they need me.
The rain storm yesterday was torrential rains and it was hard to drive in. After attending the funeral we had some errands in Ellsworth to do before we returned home. We then went to Milbridge to attend the fund raiser for Cherryfield’s 4th of July activities. They had a pig roast meal Hawaiian style and all the fixings. It was some good and the price was right too!
Tonight I tracked down Carroll’s Aunt and Uncle and got their telephone numbers so we could talk to them both. It has been a few months as one is in an assisted living and the other is now living with her son and wife. I also got to speak with my friend Molly Woodsum to see how she was doing where she was in the hospital.
Tomorrow we have a bus meeting at the office, which we have to go to, don’t know if I will be able to get to the fitness center, hopefully we could get an hour in before we have to be at the meeting. We both went last week three days, but after todays cleaning spree I think I have done enough anyway.
Town meetings are coming up this month, Addison’s is March 13, but I will be gone with a team to Beal Island that night. Not much is happening in the town so I don’t think I will miss much that night.

February 25, 2012
I had a busy week during this school vacation. Dottie Caldwell and I headed for Boston to visit our children Diadem and Jesse. They took us around the area showing us where different things were; we took a walk in the local park, went to the theater and saw Looney Toons, visited the TeaLuxe store to by some loose leaf tea. At night we played some board games, Settlers of Catan, Parcheesi, and played Squirrels, a card game of absolute nuts. What fun we had in such a short period of time. I just wished I had the chance to stay a little bit longer but alas had to return to the normal routine on the Ridge.
Carroll and I have had our grandson two days this week, one day Konner and I visited the goats and hens that live next door to us. Konner loves to be out doors when he can. Konner loves to explore the area.
The EDGE program had two days available for the students to do something over vacation. One day they went to Schoodic for a program that the rangers offered to them. Hiking and learning about tracks and what you can see in the woods during the winter. A fun day was had by all even in the rain.
On Friday we drove to Ellsworth for my eye appointment, all is well so far.
Get well to Jack Barquinha, Robert Look, Doris Joy, Will Whiles and Parris Hammond. There are a lot of illnesses in the area; I hope that everyone will soon be out and about again.
Condolences go out to B. Conley Worcester’s family of Southwest Harbor. Last year Conley was the oldest at the Worcester Reunion and we will surely miss him.
Carroll and I took a ride on Saturday and visited the new cattle on Cape Split and their owners Tim & Mary Thompson that happened to be at their barn tending to the cattle.
Two more weeks and our clocks will jump forward on March 11th . I will love to get that extra day light in the afternoon. Spring is coming soon.

Out and About

January 1, 2012

Our daughter Diadem and husband Jesse returned on Thursday to their home in Roslindale, Ma. after spending the week visiting with both families and friends. The holidays are now over and we can now get back to our normal activities. I had a couple of bus runs over vacations to take teams to their ball games to keep me busy. I also have been working on genealogy a couple of days since I had several folks ask for information, and I was able to help them out in finding their information.
My son Matthew St. Pierre and his two daughters visited us on December 26 and joined us for a meal before they had to return home. My granddaughter Brittany is on the cheering team for Hermon Hawks and had practice later in the day to get to.
On Wednesday the 28, I visited with Huddy Peterson in Harrington and we looked over family photos and did some reminiscing of by gone years. I brought a few items home to scan and put on the computer for her. It is really interesting to find old post cards and correspondence from the early 1900’s of her relatives. I am going to try and organize the letters by dates for her. One other day this past week I called on Bunnie Plummer of Harrington for a visit. I guess it was one of those days I needed to get out and about and clear my head. I also stopped by and checked on Roger and Barbara Libby of Columbia on Saturday, I had not visited with them for a month or so. Roger has been recuperating from an operation he had at the end of November.
During this week off from school I got to read three books on my new Kindle Fire my husband got me for Christmas and my four year old grandson Konner showed me how to play a game on it.
We still have two of our bus drivers Fred Prince and Tracey Peterson still out on sick leave. Hopefully before the month is over, they both will be back on their buses.
This past week I finished putting up thirty pints of carrots that needed to be canned. I still need to do some more canning when I get the time to.
The Bohemian Mama’s Bakery is closed for the month of January. I guess if you really want some bread she will be baking some on special orders during the week.
On Sunday New Year’s Day we were guest of Gerry & Maureen Healy of Columbia Falls. We enjoyed the meal and as usual we all went away with extras to enjoy another meal. Maureen makes an excellent ginger soup that we brought home.
Condolences go out to Danny Reynolds of Jonesboro, a cousin on the Reynolds side of my mother’s family.

Fly-Tying Classes with Dave Klausmeyer will begin at the Pleasant River Fish & Game clubhouse at Columbia February 15th (Wednesday) at 7:00 PM. The class will meet every following Wednesday at that same time weather permitting for six weeks. The fly-tying materials will be provided but you should purchase your own vice and bobbin. There will be no charge and is open to the public. If you need more information contact Charlie Robbins at 483-4111.
The Narraguagus Snowmobile Club in Cherryfield had another one of their suppers Saturday night at their clubhouse. A wonderful meal of marafax beans, casseroles, rolls and all the other fixings; everything was delicious.
The Snowmobile club is planning to have a poker run on January 28th with $300 for the winning hand, and ride on the DEST that day, along with a dance at the Harrington VFW the same evening. Let’s hope there will be plenty of snow for this poker run and that a lot of folks will turn out for it.
I have again been working on genealogy a bit this week, and I finally got the copies of photos of Carroll’s moose hunt into an album for him.
My granddaughter Brittany St. Pierre was in Caribou on Saturday with her cheering team the Hermon Hawks and they came in first in their competition.
Sixteen folks showed up for the hand gun safety course given on Saturday January 7 at the Pleasant River Fish & Game Club in Columbia. The Pleasant River Fish & Game Club has the next three Saturday’s booked with the girl scouts and cub scouts activities, on the last two Saturdays of the month the PRF&G staff will do a survival demonstration.
Condolences go out to the families of Eleanor Mathews and Ruth Burgess.
Get well wishes goes out to Glendon Crowley and Dennis Worcester of Columbia and Charlie Robbins of Columbia Falls. Hopefully things will be better for them.

January 15, 2012
On Monday January 9, I had an appointment with my doctor in Bangor, so I had to lose a whole day of work to go to it. We enjoyed lunch at the Olive Garden afterwards, and then headed for Ellsworth to get some more errands taken care of. I also had an appointment on Friday but that got canceled due to the weather. Just as well as the roads were slippery after the storm we got the night before.
I received a call that there is a benefit supper for Edna Curtis of Harrington at the Community of Christ Church in Jonesport on Friday, January 27, 2012. The menu will consist of bake beans, casseroles, salads etc. The supper will start at 5 pm with donations taken at the door.
The next snowmobile supper at the Cherryfield club will be Feb 4 instead of January 27th. At 5:30 pm.
Saturday January 14, Tiffany and Konner Strout, Michelle McLaughlin and I traveled to Ellsworth to see my granddaughter Brittany St. Pierre in her PVC competition, her team the Hermon Hawks came in first place with Ellsworth Eagles cheerleader’s runner up. All of the teams did an excellent job.
School will not be in session on Monday due to the holiday and Tuesday due to a workshop for the teachers.
A number of students are sick with the flu; hopefully they will be on the mend with the four days off from school.
This week I have been sorting information on my mother’s side of the family and found a paper with her hand writing on it. One of her relatives Albion Hutchings who married Evelyn Cousins went to Africa and was never heard again. I know a few years ago I connected with the grandson Dean Francis Jewett via genealogy sites. Dean has never found out what happened to his grandfather. His grandmother Evelyn never heard from him after he left his family. Albion Theodore Hutchins had two sisters Lillian Chester Hutchins (my great grandmother) who married Charles Levert Reynolds and Sylvestria “Vesta” Hutchins who married a Schoppee of Jonesboro. I have some information on these families and wish I could get more. Albion’s daughter Dora married Frank Jewett and they had three children Frank Jr., Dean, and Jeanne. I have not been able to get information on their families. I just recently came across on the internet an obit on Frank Harold Jewett 2nd who passed away Feb 2011 that gives me a little more information on this mystery. If anyone has any genealogy on this family I would love to hear from you.

The rest of the news:
The Temp was minus 9 this morning and has not got up over 10 degrees. It has been cold here all day. We did not do much today, just kept the coal stove filled and the wood stove filled. We cooked one of the moose roasts today for supper and that made a good meal.
We have enough left over to have for another meal. Yum, yum. The other day I made a moose meat loaf and that was excellent; we got two meals out of that.
I have been putting more info on the family tree so I have been busy somewhat. Of course I always get off onto something else when I do this. I also have been hunting for some info that I know I have but where is it I can’t seem to put my hands on it. In doing this searching I have been able to file items, and throw out more papers that need to be rid of which is another ending chore that is always at your beck and call. We did make some calls to older family members to catch up on their news.

January 22, 2012
We attended two benefit suppers Kendall Driscoll and James Scovil this week. Many folks turned out to support this fund raiser for them. There is another one on this coming Friday in Jonesport for Edna Curtis and then one in Milbridge on Sunday for the Jordan family. There is a lot of illness in the area. Another local, Merton Allen is in Boston for an operation, that we are praying will turn out okay. Keep them all in your prayers.
The Narraguagus Cheerleaders will be going to Bangor next weekend to compete. The cheerleaders were up against eight teams on Saturday, I thought they did well at the competition in Sumner.
My granddaughter Brittany St. Pierre said her team the Hermon Hawks came in first place again in three weeks. They also will be competing next Saturday in Bangor.
A young girl from Addison Ridge was air lifted to Eastern Maine Sunday afternoon after a sledding accident on the Ridge.
I had a lovely call from Elizabeth Emerson the other day, we talked genealogy, it is always nice to talk with the elderly, they can tell us a lot about our families and how things have changed over their life time.
On Sunday I heard that some fishermen were going ice fishing and when they got to their destination they found the temperature to be minus 16. They decided it was just too cold and returned home where it was a bit warmer.
The next public supper for the Narraguagus Snowmobile club will be February 4 at their club house in Cherryfield.
I finally succumbed to the flu bug over the weekend. I have not bounced back as quickly as the students have. Hopefully I will be back driving bus on Tuesday.

January 29, 2012

It does not seem possible that January has come and gone so quickly. I had so much that I wanted to do during this month, oh well February has an extra day so maybe I can get some more on my list done.
We enjoyed having Robert & Chuck Hammond in for a meal with us on Friday evening. We enjoy visiting with them and catching up on family news.
On Saturday we traveled to Ellsworth to get some shopping and errands done. I was able to get to Mardens & Walmart to see what they had to offer this week.
The Regional Cheerleading Competition is over; my granddaughter’s team came in second place on Saturday at the Civic Center in Bangor.
On Sunday I made two batches of mincemeat, which is a lot, but it does lower my freezer of food. I could probably make another batch or two with all of the ingredients that I still have. I used a deer neck that I had in the freezer to make mine. On a cold day it smells so good with it cooking in the oven and will surely taste good when I make it into mincemeat squares or a pie.
We did not get over to the benefit dinner in Milbridge on Sunday but I was told they had an excellent turnout to it.
Jill Kennedy of Addison has passed along some exciting news that her daughter Jillian will be getting married in July.
Get well wishes go out to a very strong person, Leslie Guptill of Addison, who has been affected by skin cancer on her face. She is now recuperating at home from this operation that was caused by using the tanning bed. She has posted photos on her face book page that shows what she had done, and it is not a pretty sight. Hopefully after some reconstructive surgery she will be looking great. Also get well wishes to Merton Allen of Columbia Falls and Glendon Crowley of Columbia, they are both home from the hospital. Clara Donovan is recuperating at The Courtland Living Ctr. In Ellsworth and is doing well.
Happy birthday wishes go out to: to Jack Gray, Jacob McLaughlin, and Bruce Worcester on the1st, Charles Lovejoy on the 2nd, Susan Norton, Carla Davis LaVallee Vasseur, on the 3rd, Dawn Coffin & Ramona West on the 4th, Leslie Guptill, Nona Cirone, Calista Morrill on the 5th, Jean Richardson and Richard Paul on the 6th, Doris Joy, Ronie Strout, Virginia Tibbetts, and my pen pal Janice Goetz on the 8th.
A Republican caucus will be held at Richard Paul’s home on the Ridge Road on February 3 at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
Don’t forget the Public supper at the Narraguagus Snowmobile Clubhouse in Cherryfield on February 4 at 5:30 p.m.
Feb 5, 2012
Twenty four Republicans met on Friday February 3, 2012 at the home of Richard & Cheryl Paul for a Republican Caucus. Folks met Republican candidates currently declared for the upcoming elections. We heard from Kathleen Caso of Calais, Rep. David Burns of Whiting and Alfred (Butch) Moore of Milbridge. Questions were directed to Rep. David Burns of Whiting and Rep. Diane Tilton of Harrington concerning critical state issues. We also heard from Peter Doak of Columbia Falls via a telephone call who was away on vacation stating his position. Everyone discussed challenges facing state and national legislators as well as the upcoming Presidential election and candidates. All area registered Republicans are invited to the Super Caucus and Presidential straw poll Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 1:30pm at Washington Academy to meet area and state candidates as well as representatives of national candidates.
For further information contact 483-4760 or 483-4777

I have been busy making blueberry jam this week to use up some blueberries I had in the freezer. I would rather do it in the winter than during the summer where I am quite busy with putting by my garden surplus. I also made some moose meat jerky for the first time and plan on making more.
The Narraguagus Snowmobile Club public supper was well attended on Saturday evening. We enjoyed visiting with everyone that was there.
Not put in paper yet:
Photo of bus
We have been waiting almost a year to hear about what was going to take place with the bus accident that happened in March of 2011. Last March our district had a bus accident on Route 1 in Harrington. A pick up truck rammed the back end of one of the Harrington buses. Thank goodness no one was injured, the truck was demolished and the bus had to have extensive work done on it before we were able to use it again. You sometimes wonder why it takes so long to have this taking care of by the courts. The papers did not pick up on it and it looks like to me that it was hushed up because something should have been written up especially where the man took off from the accident. It is a wonder he did not kill himself and hurt the students on the bus. Our director says she has not heard anything either.

News just in that Gary McLaughlin of Harrington will be celebrating his 80th birthday on February 20, let’s help him celebrate by sending him a card to P.O Box 344, Harrington, Me. 04643.
On Saturday Tiffany and Konner Strout of Harrington traveled to Whitefield to help celebrate Konner’s cousin Mackenzie Rae Ripley who turned one on Thursday February 9th.
On Friday Jacob McLaughlin spent the night with his grandparents David and Michelle McLaughlin. I am not sure who had the best of time Jacob or the grandparents.
Get well wishes go out to Larry Looke, Cory Worcester, Andrew Slicer, Michelle Porter, and Leslie Guptill.
This past week we got news that a special Uncle to all of the Strout family had passed away. Homer Brewer of Londonderry, N. H. passed away peacefully at his home on February 6, 2012 with his family at his side. He was the husband of Susie (Tucker) (Leighton) Brewer. Homer would have been 87 years old on February 23rd. We will all miss him.
The Hermon High School cheerleaders competed in the State Class B cheer-leading championship in Augusta on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2012. Hermon won the Class B title out of a field of 12 teams. We are some proud to have a granddaughter Brittany St. Pierre on the team.
The Hannah Weston Chapter, DAR has been rescheduled because of the recent snow storm members of the Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution will gather for a Dutch treat luncheon and meeting at 12 noon on Saturday, February 18th at the Bluebird Restaurant in Machias. Speaker for the afternoon will be Barbara Anthony of Roque Bluffs who will speak on Women’s Issues – Domestic Violence.
On Sunday we had a gathering of friends and family at our home to celebrate my birthday and St. Valentine’s Day. It does not take much to have a get together to break up the long winter. Good food and great conversation was had by all.

Can anyone identify this unknown man possible from the Columbia Falls area?

Congratulations to the Lady Knights of Harrington, they will be going to the tournaments in Bangor during school vacation.
The junior basketball season is about over for this season. It won’t be long before it will be pee wee season.
The EDGE program will be having a program for the children in the district on Wednesday and Thursday during school vacation. I will be taking them to Winter Harbor on Thursday for a field trip.
Condolences go out to the families of Richard Strout of Harrington and Leslie Parritt of Stueben on their passing.
Get well wishes go out to Doris Joy, Larry Looke, Cory Worcester, Andrew Slicer, Michelle Porter, Mary Thompson and Leslie Guptill.
While I was out and about this week with the bus, we have seen a herd of deer on the West Side every day. One student mentioned that she has seen the ‘white deer’ that is in the area. Also on my route I have seen the loggers cutting and hauling wood out of the woods on the West Side, Old Addison Rd and the Cape Split Rd. It has been a good winter for the wood cutters in the woods.
Had a nice call from Doris Joy thanking me for her birthday card she received from me. She mentioned that she would love to have some dandelion greens. I need to mark my calendar in May to dig her some. Here’s hoping that spring will be soon and that I will be able to find some for her. She is 97 years old and have seen many springs where she has dug greens with her sister. She told me she enjoys having her granddaughter Karmen Young visit her every Sunday.
I have had more genealogy request to help find information on the Strout, Tucker, and Worcester family. On Facebook there are several groups relating to genealogy in the area. This is a good resource in finding information and sharing photos of your ancestors and helping to identify the unknowns. I have actually been able to get several photos identified this way.
