I enjoyed meeting up with Nancy Pike and her mother Jeannette Smith on Monday the 10 at the Pickled Wrinkle Restaurant in Birch Harbor for lunch and also met her cousin Tristan Harrington and his family.
On Tuesday June 11th about twenty folks attended the Milbridge Historical Society presentation of Wayne Smith Growing up on a dairy farm in Cherryfield. His talk was very interesting. Wayne had already written an article on his presentation in the last two issues of this paper.

Carol Moffett passed out the History of the Milbridge High School that was opened in 1888 to anyone that wanted to have this.
Erma Willey of Cherryfield was the oldest alumni that attended the reunion this year.
Lots of door prizes were drawn off and Carroll and I got two of them.
Following the meeting a buffet meal was served of turkey and all the fixings followed by strawberry short cake.
Later Carroll and I stopped at the Freeman’s to see a family Bible that belonged to the Redimarkers so I could take photos of it. Another great find for genealogy of the Casman McGown and Caddie Crocker family.
For Father’s Day we had a nice meal at Bayview Take Out on Beals Island, then a ride through Jonesport, Station Rd in Jonesboro, Centerville and then home. A nice day to be out and about.

The following write up was in the program.
Sgt Edward K Brown was an aerial gunner in a B-17 bomber that was shot down over Frankfurt, Germany in the spring of 1944. The aircraft made a crash landing, where all crew members survived, but became prisoners of war. After the crash landing of the plane, the crew were swarmed by civilians who beat them before they were taken prisoner by the Germany Army. For 10 months Brown and his fellow crew members were POWS of the Germans, until being liberated by Russian troops. Mr. Brown received the Maine Silver Star in 2012 for his service and time as a POW, Mr Brown currently resides in the Machias Veterans Home and will turn 100 on June 25th.

Out and About

May 29, 2019
How time flies, I guess when your busy it just does. I don’t remember when I was growing up that it went this fast.
Well I finally got my lawn mowed for the first time this year on May 23, in between the rain days. I had to wait for the lawn to dry out and Saturday was a good day to finish up the mowing and also burn up the brush pile I had out back. What a production that was; first I had to track down the fire chief to get the fire permit, then get out the garden hose and hook it up and wait for the wind to die down. It all came together about 7 pm when I lit my fire. The one thing I missed was having my son Zeb in the mid of all of this. When ever he comes home he wants to have a gathering around the burn pile with his friends. Needless to say he is somewhere out in the Pacific Ocean on a ship working and not here. I was able to keep the fire under control and was thankful that it went well for me. Of course no worries the next day of it starting up again as it poured all night and the next day. I could not ask for a better time to do it. Now all I need to do is rake up the rest and make it presentable for the rest of the year.
On Friday May 24, all of the 5th & 6 graders attended the Memorial day Ceremony at Narragaugus Jr./Sr. High School.
Bob Hall, Richard Grant, Ed Browne, Keith Smith and Cheif King came from the Veterans Home in Machias for the program to be recognized for their service. Sgt. Edward K. Brown was also wished a happy early 100th birthday on June 25th.
Friday evening folks turned out to hear Luther Choate speak at the Pleasant River Historical Society on the years he has trapped animals. He demonstrated how to set a trap that he used and lots of pictures of animals from his game camera.
On Saturday I showed my husbands nephew Brett Leighton and his wife Michelle where the Columbia Cemetery is so they could find the grave sites of his ancestors. While I was there I put out flowers on several of my great great grandparents and 3 great grandparents as well. Afterwards I headed to Harrington for my grandson’s ball game at Bigalow Park.
Later on I took Carroll to the Columbia Cemetery to see the flowers that I put out before we headed to Bayview Take Out on Beals. Another productive day on the home front.
Monday on Memorial Day Carroll and I had a lovely cook out at our sons camp on Schoodic Lake. The weather was perfect, just right with the sunshine. Our grandson Konner took his first dip in the lake for the season. He said it was still quite cold.
Later on we drove to three different cemeteries, Columbia, Columbia Falls and Milbridge to add more flowers on our ancestors family plots and then for an ice cream before we returned home.
May 28, was our grandson’s last Spring Concert, as he will be heading to Junior High in the fall. All of the students did a wonderful job with this Concert.
During the day on Tuesday I returned to the Columbia Cemetery to find a specific lot and also cleaned the two stones so they were readable. There are so many of the older stones that are covered with moss and a lot that needs to be repaired. I just wish the Cemetery Society would hold a workshop with MOCA on how to clean and fix the grave stones. A couple of days with many hands would do wonders in cleaning up the stones and it does not cost much to do it, just your time.

Out and About
May 22, 2019

On Thursday May 16, I traveled by Concord Bus to Boston as my grandson had invited me to come to his 7th birthday party that would be held on Saturday. The weather was not looking all that great when I left my home but as I got closer to Boston the sun was shining and the temperature was rising. I felt I had gone to a different world as I had left the damp and rainy weather back at home. What a sight to behold to see the sun, trees leafed out, the flowering trees and shrubs were all in bloom. I had traveled into the future of late Spring and left behind the cold miserable weather we had been having most of May.
Alas that good weather was only for Thursday as Friday was another miserable cold damp rainy day just like I had left at home.
I wonder what we could do for the party if it rained on Saturday, I decided it was up to my daughter to figure that out. Thank goodness we awoke to a fine sunny day and the temperature was in the 60’s. We hustled around picking up the back yard, getting things ready for guest to come at noon, Asa and Mabel put together a fairy house garden in a rectangle plant container, picked up some debris that fallen from the trees and sat out the lawn chairs in the sunshine. We were about ready, but Asa had to wait for his mother to fix the frosting on his cake so he could decorate it. While Asa was working on this project, Mabel and her friend David picked a bouquet of tulips from the side flower garden for a table arrangement to share with everyone.
Dad- Jesse was sent to the store for last minute items that Mom-Diadem needed and I was busy vacuuming the house and taking care of other items that needed to be done to spruce the house up before the guest arrives.
Finally guest arrived and we were prepared….hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken was being grilled, chips, salads and other goodies were being placed on the dining table – the party had begun.
Children arrived with their parents and the children greeted each other and then checked out everything, inside and out. Thank goodness the weather had decided to be good for a change. At one point all of the children and a few parents ventured out to the near by park for a bit of excitement and get some excess energy used up before the cake was cut.
The presents were open later with Asa exclaiming in delight of the wonderful things he got.
Asa and Mabel both received a set of Lego’s that had to be put together before they went to bed. I enjoyed watching Asa opening his presents and Mabel helping him. She helped him take care of the wrapping paper so he could open the next present quicker.
When I asked him if he liked my present he said “I don’t like it, I love it!” and then gave me a big hug. I must say what a delight this was to hear and what a wonderful birthday it was for Asa.
On the day I arrived I was able to go to Asa and Mabel's school to walk them home. I got some really great hugs when they saw me waiting for them, that evening they had a class on martial arts that I went to see what they were learning.
On Friday during the rainy day I went with Diadem to Fiber Arts Boston Resource & Innovation Center, in W. Newton, Mass. where she was teaching a class on how to make zipper pouches. I even made one with a lot of help from her. A fun day to go to work with my daughter.
The mini vacation had to come to an end, and on Sunday morning my daughter dropped me off at the bus station on her way to Fiber Arts. The grandchildren were going to visit and indoor park before visiting with some friends later in the day. The sun was shining the temperature was in the 60’s and I hated to leave. As the bus got closer to Bangor the weather had changed again to that rainy weather that I was hoping had left the State of Maine.
After picking up my car at the bus station I headed Downeast, but first had to pick up a few items at Walmart while I was out and about. My next stop was Steuben where I met up with a lady that wanted to give me some genealogy books and notebooks that her mother had worked on for years. I was tickled pink to be given them. I am just thankful they thought of me. My trip was productive in my way of thinking, but it did take awhile to unload my ‘loot’ and to tell my husband that it was not much just some genealogy I was given.
The 6th grade students of D W Merritt had produced a puppet play on Monday the 20, that all students up to 8th grade was transported to watch it. They did a really great job on it.
We traveled to Bangor on the 21st for Carroll’s appointment in between my regular bus runs. It was one of those trips up and back without stopping except to get take out lunch at his favorite place.
On Wednesday the 22 I drove the 3rd and 4th graders to Leonard’s Mill in Bradley for the activities that were going on at the Maine Forest and Logging Museum. The weather was great to be outside doing activities there.
Once I got done with all my bus runs for the day, I was able to watch my grandson Konner play baseball in Harrington. I left there and went to a business meeting at the Milbridge Historical Society to discuss upcoming programs for the season.
My day was nearly done as I then had to make my list of what I needed to get done in the next couple of days.

May 17, 2019
On Mother’s Day we enjoyed having a meal at Bayview Takeout, on Beals Island. Afterwards we took a ride up around Columbia before returning home.
Sunday was a nice day to get things done in and out around the home-front. I took care of the dandelions I picked the day before and cooked them up for supper. Probably this will be our last fresh mess this season.
Carroll and I both had appointments in Ellsworth and Gouldsboro this week on Monday May 13. I thought we were all done this month but guess not we have a few more to go too.
The school district had a half day on Tuesday for a workshop for the teachers, this definitely breaks up the day for everyone. Not enough time between runs to get anything done.
By the time this comes out I will have news on what is happening in Boston as I will be visiting with my grandchildren Asa and Mabel for a couple of days. I hope the weather will be a bit nicer while I am there.
My flowering shrubs are way behind this year. I think if we get some sunshine and warmer weather they will all pop out at the same time.

Out and About
May 5, 2019

Is it just me or does it really seem like there is a lot going on around the area. Carroll and I traveled to Bangor for another one of his appointments on Monday the 29th; we were in and out quickly and was heading home all before 10 am.
On the 30th I took the Narragaugus Drama Club to UMM, while I was there I got to do some research at the library on campus and still was able to watch the play the Lobsterman & his Wife. This was another productive day for me in my research of the Epping Base Line.
On Thursday May 2 all of D.W. Merritt school went on a field trip to the Downeast Institute on Beals Island to learn about Marine Ecosystem, they had activities to do and also toured the site.
This was my first trip there and I enjoyed learning about what they do there at the Downeast Institute.
Friday was another busy day, I drove the Special Olympics students to UMM where they all came home with ribbons from their competitions. While they were busy with this I was able to do some more research at the Heritage Center on the Epping Base Line.
The school week had kept me busy, but on Saturday I was finally able to get out side and do some raking on the lawn in the morning and later in the evening from the winter plowing that always leave rocks and sand on the lawn. After getting the riding lawn mower going I hauled a few loads of sand and rocks off to put in the mud holes I seem to get. I even finally was able to get to the Transfer Station with two loads, one of which was for the Two Good To Toss building. My house seems lighter now with getting rid of reusable items that someone else may be able to use.
In the afternoon I attended the Quilt Show at the Cherryfield Academy Community Center. There were many quilts and all lovely. It was hard to choose between them all the one to vote on. While I was there I was pleased to see my friend Bonnie Clark from Eddington. We had a nice visit while looking at the quilts and getting caught up on news.
Condolences goes out to the following families on their loss of their love ones: Anthony Small of Cherryfield/Bangor, Barney Beal and Muriel Beal of Milbridge, John Burkett of Harrington and Dottie Cardarelli of Beddington.
